Wonderful house in a remote location. San Juanillo is a nice sleepy village. There are a couple places to eat nearby and the beaches are pleasant. We spent about half our time down in Guinoes where there's a bit more action (surfing, larger beach, restaurants, tours, etc). But we appreciated the quiet in San Juanillo. Time spent at the house was super-relaxing with the nice sunny pool.
Definitely get a 4x4 or even better, rent quads. The road up to this place is rough.
House manager and house owner both very responsive. -

New York, NYThe reviews were right - a gorgeous getaway

We highly recommend Casa del Sol. It has an amazing view of the valley and ocean beyond. The pictures can’t do it justice – it’s a really beautiful, well-designed home in a stunning spot. Its location at the end of a private road is perfect for those seeking privacy and tranquility. The only sounds are iguanas scurrying across the roof and howler monkeys, which you can see from the deck of the infinity pool. The house is very comfortable with three bedrooms, each with a quiet and effective air conditioning unit and en-suite bathroom. The master bedroom is upstairs and has a beautiful tub looking out at the ocean, as well as a private mini-deck. It took us about 2.5 hours to drive from Liberia airport to the villa, and there is no risk of meaningful traffic or delays. The nearby beach, which is a quick 10 minute drive, is completely stunning and not busy. Paul, the owner, was extremely responsive and helpful during the entire process of picking a villa and then during our stay (we used the well-functioning wi-fi to email him a couple of questions). His recommendations for car rental and surf lessons, etc., were spot on.

I live in CR and frequently rent out houses like this for holidays with friends or family, and I have to say this is one of my top two, of the about 25 we've rented.
The pictures gave us only a hint of how nice it would be, we were so pleasantly surprised when we walked in. The sliding glass doors are an entire wall, makes it feel like the pool is part of your living room, and ust beyond the pool is the view of the ocean and forest with pretty much nothing in between except nature ...
there is a great open social space from the professional kitchen with bar, to the living room area, to the dining tables outside. I love this place and would definitely go back. Sleeps 6 people super comfortably. My only recommendation would be to take some pool floaties with you as you'll probably want to spend all day floating in it like I did :)
And at night, you can lie back and see the stars from the pool, the terrace, or from the rooftop balcony accessed by a spiral staircase off the master bedroom... it's just beautiful!
If you have extra people, the garaje is nice enough it looks almost like a room, very clean, you could easily put mattresses on the floor and be very comfortable.

Simply wonderful - everything about this house was perfect for us and our friends. The location is completely private and beautiful, and close to great beaches, fantastic surfing, good eats, and lots of wildlife. Paul was super helpful with everything - going above and beyond to make sure our stay was perfect. The house is stunning and spacious and the pool is like something from out of a dream. We had such a great time staying here and look forward to staying at the house again! Paul even helped organize a catered party for 30 people at the house for the day after our wedding. The event was one of the highlights of the week, and Paul made sure it all came together right. Any question we ever had - Paul was right on top of it, and he has helpful folk who live nearby to make sure everything is tip-top. Thanks, Paul! We'll be back!! And if you're reading this and thinking about staying here... do it!!

My girlfriend and I just returned from spending our vacation in Costa Rica. We were lucky enough to spend the end of our trip at this beautiful house. The whole time I was there, I felt like I was in an episode of MTV cribs. The view is incredible, The sunsets are unforgettable, and the price is unbeatable. The house sits a top a wooded hill that looks out over the coast of a quaint town with beautiful beaches. Of the four places we stayed in CR, this was by-far the most memorable. Paul, the owner went above and beyond to make our stay convenient and easy. Highly recommend.

Eaton Center, New HampshirePerfect spot for a complete respite from the hectic life left be
Left on 02/05/2012 for a stay in January 2012
This very well-appointed, safe, comfortable home should be featured in "Architectural Digest". The view from the living area to the deck - to the pool - to the Pacific - and finally to the sunset is more than spectacular! Stargazers wil be amazed at the spectacular show each evening. We vacationed here with another adult couple, and found there is plenty of individual privacy, and the layout of the home allows more than ample "space" for all. The local folks who help maintain this "home away from home" are all warm/friendly/kind/competent/helpful/consciencious individuals...whether they work on the property or in the markets, restaurants, etc. We rent villas at least a couple of times a year - usually in the Caribbean and Central america - the owners of this property far exceed any others and/or management companies as far as being available to answer questions or assist with whatever is needed. The owner of this home even helped us with a car issues, which is above and beyond what we could have dreamed of. As advertised, the beach is very nice, but it was always fantastic (in fact we looked forward to it) to return home to the warm but cooling breezes, and enjoy the wonderful pool. It was so nice, that several days we didn't even venture away. We highly recommend this property, and look forward to returning. Joyce Desmarais

Long Beach, California, USAPerfect Honeymoon Location
Left on 08/24/2011 for a stay in August 2011
My wife and I just got back from a two week honeymoon at Paul's Casa de sol. Honestly, the home and location made the entire trip perfect!
-The House and view were miles beyond what can be shown in pictures. I found that none of my pictures could quite capture it either.
-The home is luxurious but welcoming, you really can relax all day if wanted.
-The nearby towns are amazing and quite possibly the coolest destinations for surfers and those looking to escape too much tourism.
For anyone looking to visit Costa Rica, forget the hotels, this is cheaper and so so so much better. Those looking at hostels, this is worth every single penny and is a total bargain.
Lastly, Paul and his staff were great the entire time and constantly were communicating with me to be sure that everything went well.

Baltimore, MDThe Most Beautiful Property & View for a Total Getaway
Left on 06/12/2011 for a stay in February 2011
My husband left a review already, but I want to leave my own because this is such a special property. We were here from February through May, 2011. This is, by far, the most beautiful property we've ever rented in Costa Rica or abroad from the standpoint of the house itself, the lovely acreage the house sits on, & the fabulous 180 degree ocean view the property enjoys. We looked at many properties in the area, & we only saw one that had a better view from this height; that lot was over $1 million. Because of the expansive, glass-faced wall of the house that opens to the ocean, there are almost constant sea breezes coming into the main part of the house and the two main floor bedrooms. The infinity pool is refreshing day or night, rain or shine. We saw many Howler monkeys in trees right next to the house, all kinds of lizards, toads, many bird species, an armadillo, etc. The owner, Paul, has a wealth of information about the area that he willingly shares, and has a host of people who service the property who are there very quickly if there are any needs that arise. Rosa, the housekeeper, is excellent, and will also cook meals if you arrange it with her (and is very patient in teaching you Spanish or in working with you to understand your English), and her husband, Johnny, the pool and garden keeper, is extremely nice as well. There is a room-sized, lockable safe for valuables when you're away from the house so the house can stay open to the sea 24/7. I cannot recommend this property highly enough to honeymooners, families, retirees--anyone who wants a real getaway & can rent an SUV. Families w/ small children should be aware of a relatively steep drop-off just below the infinity pool & that there is a deep end to the pool. Because of the economy, there are properties you might get for less money, but you won't find any for any amount of money that'll give the you feeling you wanted when you began to plan "a real getaway vacation in Costa Rica."

This a great place to relax and escape from daily hectic life. It has an spectacular ocean and sunset view and also you feel very close to mother nature. The beaches close by are excellent. The house was in excellent condition, just like the pictures. It could be a little isolated for some but if you want to enjoy the very best of CR/Guanacaste (no artificial ingredients), then this is for you. Paul was on top of all the details to make sure we got the right service, from addresses, things to do until house keeping.

Left on 05/31/2011 for a stay in August 2009
This house and the view it provides makes you feel like paradise. Engulfed in lush green forest and the sounds of the jungle, you feel as if you are the only people on Earth. If you want to be reminded otherwise, the drive into "town" and the surrounding beaches is quick and easy. Plus I found it thrilling to drive on unpaved roads for a change. I definitely recommend this property to any potential traveler. And Paul was great to deal with!!

Left on 05/21/2011 for a stay in June 2010
This is a phenomal house in the best part of Costa Rica (close to Nosara with its great surfing, yoga and restaurants and to the world famous turtle breeding beaches). But you never really have to leave the house...with its incredible pool, great kitchen and BBQ you can just sit back and relax watching the monkeys in the trees, the birds in the sky and the waves crashing on the ocean below. Highly recommend.

Baltimore, MD, U.S.More beautiful than the photos!
Left on 05/20/2011 for a stay in March 2011
Here for three months: Mar, Apr, May. The owner in the U.S. is very responsive and helpful (by email and by phone), Rosa, the housekeeper, is energetic and friendly, especially of you are willing to try to speak Spanish, and Johnny, the man who maintains the pool and grounds, is very polite and decent.
The location up the hill from the coastal pueblo of SanJuanillo had for us the right combination of privacy, view of the Pacific, the valley, and the sunsets, and easy access to the beaches of San Juanillo. My father-in-law says that if you can't relax here, you can't relax. We were here for three months and never grew tired of the ambiance. Great place to write, if you have a project. Good internet access, though here, as elsewhere in CR, the connection can be a little spotty.
Very spacious house, with privacy in all the bedrooms, good light, and excellent, open feel for the western water and sky. Secure bodega for your valuables.
We added a number of flowering plants at the entrance, and they're full of life with the advent of some rains. If you like hills, hiking, monkeys, birds, and butterflies, get up early before the heat and walk the roads of the finca. If you don't feel like hiking, wait, and the monkeys will come to you. Several times a week.
For getting here and around, we recommend a 4x4 SUV. Some steep hills and some rough roads. We never had a problem with our vehiculo.
