Full of color, Casa Roja is a comfortable, modest home consisting of two apartments, each with it own kitchen, patio and sharing a rooftop. The artist-owner created each apartment so that she would like to live in it (she has lived in both). The house has purified water throughout, and an automatic washer. It is located in Colonia San Antonio, in the area near the Instituto Allende, an interesting walk to the jardine in the center of town. It is also close to clay tennis courts.

Casa Roja is located on a quiet safe street in a comfortable Mexican working-class neighborhood, near the parish church plaza. It is a short walk to the Instituto Allende, a 20 minute walk to the center of town. There is local bus service every 1 minutes for the non-walkers, and cabs abound.

The location of this pleasant, artsy home is a highlight. Local, good resturants within blocks,walking distance to centro and shopping, safe neighborhood and open air roof-vista all appealing. If Ms Read vacates in order to rent, you have no control over your upstairs or downstairs neighbors but, worth the risk.

Lois met me at the door upon arrival by taxi with her warmth and hospitality and that permeated my entire stay at Casa Roja and San Miguel de allende. I stayed in Casa Roja arriba and enjoyed the roomy kitchen, art on the walls, Mexican touches, winding stair to the casual rooftop patio where laundry is hung to dry. Another patio off the bedroom also nice for dinner on a warm evening or coffee in the morning. Even a gas fireplace to take off the January chill. Loved that! Had a desk for studying Spanish and wifi for keeping in touch plus the location in Colonia San antonio was excellent for walking to Mega, to the farmer's market in Juarez Parque, the Plaza, evertyhing very accessible and quiet --well except for the church bells which are like music. Walking home in the evening alone I always felt safe and Lois was so helpful in pointing out neighborhood eateries and introducing me to the Pocket Theatre and other enriching activities. Casa Roja is a real gem and if you're an artist ask about the studio available. I definitely recommend Casa Roja and hope to make it back to SMa for another extended stay.
