      Relax in pampered luxury

Left on 12/19/2012 for a stay in December 2011

Gorgeous villa, just a few minutes from "downtown" San Pedro. Very private, with lots of room. Each bedroom has its own bath, four of them have ocean views. Wonderful food and the staff can take care of any arrangements for trips you amy want to take. While there is not a lot of traditional sandy beach on ambergris, the pool area looks out onto the water. and there is plenty of room for kids to play in the sandy area. The water is quite shallow and safe for the kids to play in as well. While it is an expensive villa, you get what you pay for in terms of the amenities, fine furniture and beddings.

      Relaxing Getaway with Fabulous accomodations

Left on 02/13/2012 for a stay in January 2012

It rained sometime everyday. But have no fear, the 10 adults staying here had plenty to keep us busy. We snorkeled, sailed, fished, drank, partied, played chess, and best of all, relaxed. The natives are friendly, and our hostess Maria and her staff treated us like royalty. No wonder she is considered the best cook on the island! Absolutely loved it!

      Outstanding!!!

Left on 04/12/2011 for a stay in March 2011

It was a wonderful vacation from beginning to end. Working with Peggy was a pleasure. She was very helpful and available throughout the process. The home is well appointed and very comfortable. The location is ideal, a fun golf cart trip to town or the north end. The pool with all it's amenities was our favorite. We played a lot of chess and occupied every chair and hammock!!! The dock for excursions is very convenient. I'm saving the best for last...Maria & her staff!! We ate 22 out of 23 meals there. She is very accommodating as far as meal time and selection. From the hand squeezed orange juice to the homemade pies and cakes, there is nothing you won't find fabulous! 5 star all the way. The only negative comment I have is that is a sewer smell in the bathrooms, but it is an island. You will have a wonderful holiday if you rent this property.

      The best vacation/honeymoon ever!!!

Left on 04/05/2011 for a stay in October 2010

I have traveled many places and I must say, this was the best!!! The Pelican's Nest at Casa Tortuga was perfect for our honeymoon! We enjoyed every minute of our 8 day trip. The cook/maid who lives on the grounds greeted us with fresh guacamole and pina coladas when we arrived and the trip just got better and better! Because we had her, we saved a lot of money not having to dine out for most of our meals. We spent a fraction on food as we do on most vacations and had homemade everything!!! We just told her what we would like for the next day or so and she shopped and prepared it for the time we requested. We arranged all our excursions through contacts of Casa Tortuga which made it so convenient and excellent pricing on everything! It is close enough to the main "strip" and yet far enough away to provide all the privacy anyone could want. The private beach and pool were amazing and we enjoyed having fresh ceviche at the table in the pool as we went for a swim. We enjoyed breakfast and other meals on the roof deck which gave us an amazing view of the ocean and island. I could not recommend a better place to stay if you are going to Belize either for a romantic get away or a family vacation or even a large group of friends etc.

      Oceanfront home for large families

Left on 04/04/2011 for a stay in December 2010

With 2 children and their wives plus 4 grandchildren (ages 6 and under) we had a very comfortable time at the villa. The staff were very friendly and the cook was excellent. We never felt crowded while there. The home is oceanfront with no beach. That's common for Belize. There is a short wall keeping the ocean from the property.
We have rented many villas over the years, and the one minor complaint would be that the cook (grocery getters) never gave us a receipt for the food they purchased. This has not been true in other villas in Mexico.
Our stay would have been more enjoyable if the wind had died down from the 25 mph during the week-but that's Mother nature.

      Thank you for your review.
Just to clarify for future guests, we have 250' of beachfront in front of Casa Tortuga Villa.
150' of our beach is a natural sandy beach, where you can walk directly into the sea. The last 100' of our beach has a 2' high seawall with an 8- wide semi circle step leading to the water. Our dock is at the south end of our seawall, so that it does not impede the view of the reef from the villa.

Wonderful Casa, with everything you need to have a relaxing time

Left on 04/04/2011 for a stay in February 2010

Casa Tortuga is a wonderful slice of heaven, just a beautiful home, it has everything that you need for a great vacation! From the pool to the rooms its top notch! (The Beds were awesome) Besides fishing, scuba, snorkeling and the Mayan ruins, there is no need to leave the property to enjoy the vacation. Maria the caretaker/cook is a special lady and a wonderful cook every meal was very tasty and the afternoon Ceviche, Guac and Salsa were great! The perfectly placed hammocks were very relaxing, the chess board on the beach was a fun addition and many games were played and the little table in the pool was perfect for card games and drinks! The perfect place for a vacation for fun and relaxation on San Pedro is Casa Tortuga, can't wait till next year.

      One in a million place

This place--Casa Tortuga--is the #1 property in Belize. I should know. I've visited Belize nine times since 1998. I have scrutinized all the premier houses for rent on ambergis Caye. I've been to all the adjacent islands. I've been to the mainland. Peggy Mason is a highly cultured diva who has impeccable taste, a big budget, and a talent for design and decor. She has the best plot of land on the island, a wonderful cook, and all the best contacts for excursions and entertainment. When you spend time at Casa Tortuga, you are sitting in the lap of luxury and don't ever want to leave. It is akin to a private 5-star hotel, only better.

      Elegant Treasure in Paradise

Left on 02/09/2011 for a stay in February 2011

One of the best places I've ever stayed while in San Pedro! The house is absolutely breathtaking! The rooms are elegant and comfortable and each have private bathrooms. There is plenty of space to share Casa Tortuga with a group of friends and or family while still maintaining your privacy. The pool is spectacular with its swim up table - great for a game of cards in the sun! The location is terrific as it is a short drive south from town yet gives you privacy and seclusion for maximum relaxation! Maria is an excellent cook and offered a wide variety of dining options (as well as cooking up our fresh catch from a day of fishing!) Maria's homemade salsa, guacamole and ceviche are delectable!!

The hammocks, the view of the Caribbean, the sun, the breeze...Casa Tortuga is the epitome of elegant treasure in paradise!

      Wonderful time...again and again!

Left on 01/09/2011 for a stay in January 2011

We just stayed at Casa Tortuga for the 4th time. This trip included 6 adults and 4 college aged children. As always, we were pampered by Maria. Her cooking is fabulous and everything is always fresh and homemade. We took 2 fishing trips with Roberto and caught over 100 fish in total. We also took 4 snorkleing trips with Carlos (Suya tours). Two of the kids went diving. The last day we did an all day snorkle and beach picnic with Carlos. He and his partner plus 2 in our party when spear gun fishing and caught 10 lobsters, 3 snappers, and a 20lb grouper that they cooked for us on the beach for lunch! It just doesn't get any better than that! We love San Pedro and will return again.

      Wonderful Villa!

Left on 11/03/2010 for a stay in July 2010

      Casa Tortuga

Our group of 13 (6 parents and 7 teens) stayed at Casa Tortuga in July of 2010. We requested information after seeing their great website and soon were speaking with the owner, Peggy Mason.

Casa Tortuga Villa has five bedrooms, and can accommodate 11 guests. We also rented the Pelican’s Nest Guest house, which can accommodate four additional guests, for a total of 15 guests, so the villa and guest house were ideal for our group.

We reserved both houses by October and received a 10% discount making the rent and taxes for both houses a total of $10,708.02. In the end, with initial grocery money and cleaning fees we paid $12,250.00 for 6 nights in July. Peggy has not had a rate increase in six years.

This rate includes the services of Maria, who lives in an apartment under the Pelican’s Nest suite. Maria is awesome. Maria is the reason we would return to this house. She prepared meals for us every day. She would ask what meals we would like to have at the villa and then ask for grocery money. The next day, voila, the meals would be prepared and served and cleaned up after. Her cooking is sublime! It was great to wake everyone up for the day’s adventure by announcing breakfast. Maria created a different menu everyday and it almost seemed like it was served on a different and very pretty set of dishes each day. We were so pampered. She considered the dietary needs of the group and included vegetarian options at every meal. She makes a fabulous Margarita with fresh squeezed lime juice and her own chopped salsa.

The Villa is gorgeous. From the cherub fountain in the pool to the beautiful stained glass windows every detail has been considered. We continued to discover the house’s unique design features all week long. We were actually concerned that the house was too pretty for us. We asked Peggy if we could throw a football in a pool that has a fountain from Versailles? We could. The beds were carved with amazing wooden designs but more importantly, they were comfortable. Check out the website for it’s accurate pictures of the property. It even has a giant chess set on the beach. www.casatortuga.com

Casa Tortuga is located less than two miles from town. I walked there once and took a taxi back, but mostly we drove golf carts around which was a riot. Bumpy but fun. Ambergris Caye is gorgeous. There was a good breeze all week except for one day. That day the ocean was like glass. It was eerily beautiful and then the mosquitoes arrived. Yikes. Bring bug repellant (at least a gallon). We were so glad that the wind came back the next day.

We became certified Scuba Divers by completing our open water dives at Chuck & Robbie’s Dive Shop. They were great. Listen carefully to Gill’s presentation about finding your way under the ocean without a compass. That was really interesting. Robbie was a great instructor and I felt confident that we were in good hands. The reef is amazing. We went to 100 feet.

Do not miss shark Ray alley! You’ve seen the movie Jaws, right? Forget it. This was an entirely new view of sharks; they were nurse sharks, not great whites, but still really interesting. The rays were so graceful and appeared everywhere. It felt like Iowa must be on a different planet than Belize, one a little farther from the sun.

We also did the river rafting trip. The caves were very interesting but the tour felt like a Disney ride. Maybe we went in too large a group? Walking to the caves through the jungle was gorgeous but again, the mosquitoes feasted on us. If we had bug repellant in a water proof bag maybe we would have been able to stop and enjoy the jungle instead of racing thru. You wade across a rushing river before entering the jungle which may have washed off the bug spray. We did get to stop and taste the termites. They really do taste like carrots. The trip by bus to the caves was hot and long. On the way back, with rum punches added to the mix, the trip was much more pleasant.

We zip lined thru the trees on that same trip. It was fun! Again, it is very monitored, like a theme park ride but most of us found it thrilling. It’s a neat way to see the jungle. Our tour provided lunch, which was delicious and picked us up at Casa Tortuga’s own dock.

I’m sure I’m forgetting some of the wonders of the trip but the point here is to highly recommend Casa Tortuga. It is fabulous.
