Los AngelesExperience great; Refund on deposit not handled well at all!!
Left on 03/07/2013 for a stay in January 2013
We had a wonderful time at the property. Lots of room and location was terrific. The company's handling of the refund on deposit was downright unprofessional. We had damaged a $70 table and all of a sudden I get back a check with a $500 deduction on our deposit with vague costs like "extra cleaning" and excessive charges for replacing the table. I felt this would keep me from using this company again.

This is a house that seems to have been partied in, more than stayed in. The floor was so dirty when we arrived that our crawling grandchildren had black legs within an hour of our arrival. Many things were broken-closet doors, cabinet doors, blinds, toaster, coffee maker, chairs. The manager said he would come over to talk about our concerns but he sent a newly hired repair guy instead. Notes and messages were ignored. Really not worth the price unless you are planning a brawling party! We have rented houses before in other areas. This was our worst experience.

We are sorry that this guest had such a bad experience at Shoreline Retreat. As you can see from all the other reviews, the property has always been well-reviewed by our guests. It has always been cleaned and re-stocked for new guests after every stay.
However, we do apologize that these guests did not feel that our company's responsiveness was adequate to address their concerns. This is a very rare occurrence. The home is professionally cleaned and inspected after each reservation, and we have a 24/7 maintenance phone that guests can call if there are any property problems.
Please call our Guest Relations staff directly if this negative review causes you any concern. I am sure that we can address any issues that you may have.

Twain Harte, CAHouse has great potential!
Left on 01/17/2013 for a stay in October 2012
The accommodations were fine, except for the working order of the plumbing. There were 14 of us and no one ever had a hot shower without getting blasts of cold water. Also, one upstairs shower leaked into the kitchen, so the ladies couldn't use that shower. The plumber was there almost daily!! The last day, we used the toaster oven (no knob on the turn-on switch) and when it stopped, the power to the refrigerator and microwave all went off. The fax machine also didn't work, although the Paradise Retreats office did let us use their fax machine. They need to put a gate or some other security measure at the bottom of the stairs which lead to the upstairs bedrooms. Anyone from the street could go up the stairs and access the bedrooms as the locks didn't seem very secure. It's too bad when they updated the house a few years ago they didn't put in quality blinds. Plastic mini blinds don't belong in a lovely home. It's a great location...the home needs some TLC.

Came to SB for a week for our Daughter's wedding at alice Keck Park Memorial Gardens in July. Shoreline Retreat allowed the whole family coming from Ohio, Nevada, Idaho and Los angeles to all stay together and to have just a wonderful time. We all (16 at a time) were able to eat together after fixing wonderful meals and the whole house was awesome, location and facilities. Anything we needed the manager or his assistant were more than willing to supply. Make sure to ask about the supply cabinet and where the keys are located, though. Would highly recommend this facility if you have a big group. Location to the wharf and downtown were definitely a plus. We had a blast!

Left on 07/20/2012 for a stay in June 2012
With 8 bedrooms, this home has space for a large extended family and is conveniently located to Shoreline Park and downtown. Loved all the dining space and the large living room for gathering. Some of the bathrooms are tiny and there were some things that could have been cleaner (like the kitchen cabinets). But the house also has some great amenities like the extra refrigerator and the roof top deck. We enjoyed our stay, and Suzy at Paradise Retreats was fabulous to work with. They even called us to return an iPad that was left at the house. Now that's great service!

A group of 14 triathletes trained out of Santa Barbara for one week and we were all able to stay in this fantastic home. The garage was perfect for safely storing all the bikes, the washing machines were used daily, the kitchen accommodated all of us and the rooms were very comfortable. The location was perfect, just a short run from the house after a long ride and we were soaking in the ocean.

I am a member of a group called Sisters With a Purpose. There are 14 members. The group decided to take the train to Santa Barbara and I was in charge of finding a rental large enough to handle 14 senior women for 5 nights. I located Shoreline Retreat on line and called Paradise Retreats, The people there are very friendly professional and organized. The paper work was sent to me and sent back with deposit. The house was beautiful. So much character. 8 bedrooms made it very comfortable for each of us. The house had a large kitchen, a spacious living room where we could all relax after a full day of activities. A nice hot tub in the back yard. The house was very clean and bright, every bedroom had a large TV. this will always be a memorable vacation for me because it was the week of my 69th birthday.

San DiegoExcellent location
Left on 01/12/2012 for a stay in November 2011
The home was great for our family however getting through the initial process was not ideal. When I first reached out to Paradise Retreats they told me that we were over the limit because there was a baby that was 2 and they considered a 2 year old an adult and therefore we had too many people to stay. Each time I tried to reach out I had a response from a different person. When I gave up e-mailing and called I still had a cold and short response from the person who answered. We ended up fitting within the parameters after all but the guidelines were a little unreasonable and the contract asking for personal information of each guest was extensive. I am responsible for renting a home for our family 2-3 times a year and I have never had such an experience like this. I work in hospitality and give my clients the best possible service so when I am a customer I expect the same and I definitely did not from Paradise Retreats.
That being said the house worked out well for us and I appreciated that they provided items like detergent and a few other helpful amenities. The location was ideal being close to a park and Lazy acres. The stay overall was pleasant. -

The process of setting up the stay was outstanding and everything went according to plan. The home exceeded my wildest expectations, I was thrilled. We treated the home with the utmost respect and thoroughly cleaned the entire house prior to our on-time checkout of 10 a.m. on the last day.
One caveat to the stay - the first night, myself and 2 other gentlemen were having a conversation outside around 11 or 12. I didn't think we were even within earshot of anyone, and if we were I didn't think it would matter since we were speaking at a very reasonable and casual level. Unfortunately, the neighbor up the hill to the East found us to be a bit loud. When he came to the house, I personally spoke with him, explained the misunderstanding and both parties walked away calmly and in agreement. The next morning, I sought out that neighbor to personaly apologize again, make sure everything was ok and offer any reparations deemed necessary by him as a result of the issue. When I got to his home, I was told that it wasn't a big deal in the slightest and that they were very appreciative of how I handled the situation.
2 weeks after our checkout, my $1,000 deposit was witheld - I had no idea at the time why this could possibly have been.
Donna Bailey was the one to try and explain.
She tried to explain your guys' position on this and why I was being charged my deposit.
When I tried to clarify and ask for some mitigation, she simply ignored me and I never heard from you again.
I was hoping to forge a long term relationship with your organization, use your homes for years to come and recommend to all of my friends.
I have no intention of doing any of that anymore.
I feel thoroughly disrespected and taken advantage of. I complied with all payment requirements on time and left the houes in immaculate condition. Because of a small misunderstanding that I personally took care in a very professional manner, I getting taken for a full thousand.
I hope you reconsider.Response from Paradise Retreats-World Class Vacation Rentals - 11/01/2011

When Mr. Dolan initially made his reservation, it was rejected. We are a family vacation rental business. Our homes are in residential areas and we do not rent to large groups of younger people who may disrupt the neighborhood. Our website and contract clearly state that "it is our policy to not rent to groups of adults under the age of 40". Per the guest roster on his Rental Agreement, Mr. Dolan was vacationing with friends who were all under 40.
After we rejected his reservation, Mr. Dolan then called our reservation manager to dispute the rejection. He said they were responsible and would respect the house and the neighborhood. He sent a two page letter stating the same thing. I called and spoke with him personally about the sensitivity of the neighborhood and he assured me there would be no problems.
During his stay, a neighbor was forced to go over about 1:00 am and ask Mr. Dolan and his guests to quiet down. The neighbor called the owner of the home the next day and the owner called us. I called Mr. Dolan's cell phone to get his side and he never returned my call. Upon check-out I sent an email to Mr. Dolan saying he was in violation of his contract. He was in violation of paragraph 12ciii), which clearly states the consequence for noise complaints by neighbors:
12. REVOCATION OF LICENSE: EVICTION AND LOSS OF DEPOSIT(S) AND RENTAL FEE(S): The following rule violations, behavior, activities, and disturbances may result in immediate revocation of license, eviction from the premises, filing of trespass charges, and/or loss of entire security deposit(s) and rental payment(s).
c. Disturbances
iii. Complaints from neighbors due to loud talking and music, loud pets, excessive crowds, or excessive parking
In Mr. Dolan's e-mail response to me, he said he apologized to the neighbor and that everything was fine. I responded and said everything was not fine. He had damaged the relationship with the neighbor and the owner. His response was he didn't damage anything and how could I possibly know that? At that point I did not respond any further to Mr. Dolan's emails and we withheld the security deposit. -

Our extended family was very pleased with Shoreline Retreat. Great kitchen and dining area, there were plenty of bedrooms, plenty of bathrooms, adequate parking for our four cars. Shoreline Retreat was close to beaches, parks, grocery stores and a number of additional amenities. We do a family reunion once a year and wish we had a Shoreline Retreat type home in the other spots we choose to vacation in.

Good location and size for a large family reunion/wedding. $400. cleaning fee not justified, as house marginally clean with many cobwebs & ants in kitchen. Master bathroom had several lights & sockets not functioning. Jack & Jill bathrooms presented some difficulty for several. Rooftop deck had only 2 small (childs?) lounge chairs & a table w/no chairs. Potentially a great house. Would consider renting again, but above items should be addressed.

My 2 sisters, I ,several of our grown children and 2 grandchildren spent the week at Shoreline Retreat. It was a great location; an easy walk to 2 different playgrounds for the kids; very close to grocery stores; a fine starting off place for the runners among us; even a pleasant walk to the harbor (about a 3 mi round trip but uphill on the way back). The kitchen was well equipped and large enough for all of us to eat in. The roof deck was a great place to watch the lovely sunsets. The weather was cool when we were there so we didn't use the outdoor space except for the hot tub. The back patio felt a little closed in. In general the outdoor spaces were not as nice as the indoor.

We are a group of 8 women that found the house suitable because of the number of bedrooms. It was fine for the week but nothing special for the price. No bathtub in the master suite was disappointing and the bedrooms were stuffy at night. They had doors on to a balcony,( which couldn't be left open at night) but no windows to open. The door to the rooftop not only didn't lock it didn't even close properly. We didn't really spend much time in the house and all in all we enjoyed our stay. Paradise Retreats were good to deal with.

Great features: good location, enough room to gather in the living room and dining room, good bed configuration. The problem was in 2 repairs that should have been made before we arrived. Minor was the icemaker. Major was broken tub faucet in a bathroom: no hot water. It wasn't able to be fixed while we were there.

Left on 06/17/2009 for a stay in May 2009
Overall, the place was pretty comfortable. There were small maintenance issues, but they were pretty quickly resolved. The main problem was that the information about the place on the website wasn't completely accurate so we ended up having a lot of issues because of that. Some beds that were listed as queen or king size on the website were actually doubles or queens. The site was also inaccurate about which bathrooms had tubs, etc.

We appreciate this guest's honest review of our property.
To clarify, there are NO double or full size beds at this property. The beds are all King, Queen, or twin/trundle (+ a baby crib).
The guest is correct that the beds listed on our website are not accurate for 2 of the rooms. One room says King + Twin trundle, and it is actually a Queen + Twin trundle. The other room says Queen, and it is actually a King! We appreciate their observation, and are fixing it on our website.
Regarding the bathrooms, the guest is correct that there is incorrect information on the website for 2 of the bathrooms. The website says shower/tub combo, and there are actually only showers (no tub). We will be fixing this information also.
Thank you for your stay, and we appreciate your insights which will help provide more accurate information for future guests.
Sincerely,

Los AngelesWedding weekend
Left on 06/05/2009 for a stay in January 2009
We really enjoyed the house overall, however, there were a couple of things that did not make sense. They include the following:
-Cleaning fee $400, but we were required to have dishes washed, trashes emptied and recycling put out. I would think a cleaning fee like that, we could leave the place as is and it would get cleaned up by the cleaning people.
-There was a problem with the toilet in which we had to call the rental agency to fix it twice during the weekend and they were about to charge us the deposit. We came to a resolution about that.
-We ran out of hot water for all the guests.
I would say that if those issues are resolved for the next guests, then I'd highly recommend the place.Response from Paradise Retreats-World Class Vacation Rentals - 07/15/2009
Paradise Retreats-World Class Vacation Rentals
Manager
We appreciate this guest's honest review of the property.
Regarding the cleaning fee: $400 is a reasonable fee to get an 8 bedroom, 6 bathroom home cleaned in the 5 hours we have between check-out and check-in. We actually pay the housekeepers $325, and a professional Property Inspector $50 to ensure the house is in perfect condition for the next guests. The remaining $25 goes to restock all the paper goods, soaps, shampoos, ziplock bags, and the other 37 items which we provide so guests do not need to purchase the "basics" for their stay. We ask that guests do not leave dirty dishes around the house, and to please take out the kitchen trash so there is not excessive odors.
The hot water issue has been resolved by a new installation of an "on-demand" instant water heater. This new system is energy efficient, and provides an unlimited supply of hot water.
Continuous toilet clogging is usually a problem caused by guest behavior (ie. tampons or other foreign objects in the toilet), and we do charge guests for the repair of "guest caused" plumbing issues. We will usually waive the charge if there is any possibility that it was a house problem and not guest-caused problem.
We thank this guest for their stay, and hope that they are satisfied with our response to their issues.
Sincerely,
Paradise Retreats

We had a girls weekend and it could not have been more perfect. There were about 13 of us and everyone had plenty of privacy since the house is huge; it just goes on and on forever. It is also perfectly centrally located in Santa Barbara in regards to the downtown area, harbor, and beaches. The home is very well kept and tastefully decorated.
