      Excellent!

Left on 10/10/2012 for a stay in September 2012

Planning all the way from Florida I was a little apprehensive since pictures can often mislead.
Mr. Orzi, was very prompt in returning my sheduling request and we soon had everything drafted. The pictures are exactly as the house is, yet we were amazed by the size, location and beauty.
The house is very airy, all the major windows opened up. There are so many terraces/balconies, that in our 3 day stay we couldn't use all of them. The master bedroom is immense and very well appointed. The second bedroom on is small but comfortable and the downstairs bedroom is good as well. The bathrooms all worked in great order and everything worked as advertised. We didn't end up using the kitchen to cook as we hit some fantastic restaurants around town. But, even with the dated equipment everything we used worked well (microwave, fridge and dishwasher).
Unfortunately Mr.Orzi could not meet up on the day to drop off the key since we were getting in late that evening, but he gave me detailed instructions on everything. He is on top of customer service and I had the distinct impression that we could call him at anytime if there was any need. For us, we did not have any issues with the house.
The location as stated is by a canal (which was full of algea, but did not bother us at all, and the water is quite clear if you can see below the algea). It also has the amtrak station close by, but it didn't affect us at all eventhough there is a train that whistles multiple times right by the house around 2 in the morning! Didn't wake up my 2 yr old, so we didn't have any issues with it. It is walking distance to State Street and all the bars/restaurants...though it did take us over an hour to get back one night (but that might be because some of us had to be carried home!)
Overall, this is quaint and airy house, with a beachy feel and plenty of Santa Barbara charm! The location is hard to beat and the amount of house you get for the price is hard to match!Enjoy your next stay!

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Left on 08/29/2012 for a stay in August 2012

      Casa azzurra
      Santa Barbara

The Good the Bad and the Ugly

I find it hard to believe that no reviewer has mentioned any of the following.
Let’s start with the Ugly. The white couch was filthy. The house backs to a body of standing water generously called The Mission Creek. We know it did not move because the bottles of beer as well as other garbage thrown remained there throughout our stay. The dishwasher is old and coated with some sort of white powder. Most pots and pans are old and rusty, matching the furniture in the two terraces, which haven’t been cleaned in a while.
Now for the Bad, and this is really bad, perhaps even illegal. The windows are prevented from being opened by a metal stopper. Even if they could open, there are no screens. To add insult to injury there was a heat wave and the heat in the house was unbearable. There are ceiling fans, which were useless in that sort of heat. The ones in the kitchen and the third bedroom did not work anyway. The master bedroom and bath are located in the attic, where the heat unfortunately tends to rise. There is a train station literally a few steps away from the back of the house and the train blows the whistle several times starting at 5 am. I understand that this is a problem all along the coast of Santa Barbara so there is not much the owners of this house can do. But if you consider sleeping in to be an important part of your vacation, beware.
The toilets are flushed by pulling on a top button; we were warned that this requires some skill and something terrible could happen if it is not done just right.
The hot water faucet in the downstairs bedroom leaks and cannot be shut off; neither can it be turned on, so no hot water in the sink.
By the way, the contract you sign has the length and complexity of a mortgage application, including the $1,000 deposit. A paragraph in the contract states that the windows have to be closed when the air Conditioner is on. Well, there is no aC, but the windows definitely stay closed.
I left the Good for last. Considering that the house was built in 1904 it has come a long way and it has great potential. It is roomy, each bedroom has a bathroom, the kitchen is large, as are the living room and dining room. There are dozens of knick- knacks all around which I suppose some people may find quaint. I found it cluttered. The table is nicely set as you arrive. The location is superb: one and a half blocks to a beautiful beach, several restaurants and the wharf. One could in theory walk to the center of town as well, but the real action starts a bit further up. There is a one- car garage, and you are given a permit to park on the street. Best of all, the deposit was returned in a very prompt manner.
There are nice touches all around but on the whole they don’t make up for the many deficiencies.

Response from Domenico Orzi & Francesca Gallorini - 09/22/2012

      Domenico Orzi & Francesca Gallorini

      Owner

I appreciate guests' reviews because they help me provide a better service and full satisfactory stay for all my prospective guests. In this case, however, I'm a puzzled by all their complains because I never heard a word from them during their stay. I would assume that if there were issues with a rented house, guests would contact the owner immediately so that the owner had a chance to address them right away. As indicated in all my positive reviews, I always provided excellent customer service to all my guests, but, in this particular case, I didn’t get a fair chance to even address their issues. Casa Azzurra is an historical and charming 1904 home as often indicated in all my positive reviews. Certain amenities expected in modern homes are often not found in historical homes. Furthermore, my VRBO listing clearly states that Casa Azzurra does not have air conditioning; so, I do not understand why these guests were expecting to find air conditioning in my house. The heat wave and severe drought experienced in Santa Barbara during the beginning of August 2012 was a very unusual and severe one and the Mission creek that runs behind Casa Azzurra had very little running water. Normally, the mild temperatures we have in Santa Barbara and the favorable position of Casa Azzurra close to the ocean do not require air conditioning. The Amtrak railway runs across the entire city. All best hotels close to the ocean and beach houses find the railway in their back yard. Our VRBO listing clearly shows the map of our location in Santa Barbara and states that we are conveniently located close to the Amtrak Station.

home away from home in beautiful west beach

Left on 05/09/2012 for a stay in December 2011

What a wonderful home! And what a perfect location! Just two blocks from the beach and a five minute walk to downtown, the location could not be better. You really don't need a car, though if you have one, there's even a garage! We stayed all winter, from December to april and can truly say that Casa azzura was a home away from home. There are decks on three sides of the house and even the lovely Mission Creek runs behind it. Furnishings and the other amenities more than met our needs even for an extended stay. Santa Barbara is a lovely town and west beach is the best part of it. What made it perfect was being able to stay at Casa azzura!

A wonderful house in the most perfect spot

Left on 10/13/2011 for a stay in September 2011

Casa azzura was a perfect 'home' for us, while visiting Santa Barbara this fall.
The house has a Mediterranean charm, with lots of light, flowing spaces, and generous amenities.
The outside porches were perfect for distant family members to gather and catch up with each others lives and gave the house added spaciousness.
Being a block from the beach and a few more to the downtown we walked everywhere, including restaurants.
It was a great house and we really enjoyed our stay.

This is a spacious, well kept property. Furnishings and other amenities are all of good quality. The house is located in a quiet neighborhood which was one block from State street and two blocks from the beach. We would definitely stay here again.
