San JoseA Great Way to Wrap Up the Summer
Left on 09/01/2012 for a stay in August 2012
The Black Pearl is the perfect location. We loved every minute of our week there. The only problem we had was that the doorways and hallways were a bit narrow for our son's wheelchair. The location and patio made up for that. We will definitely be returning.

At the end of a dead end street, looking out to the sea - a real delight! Simple comfort, perfect for a family. We really loved our stay and would have liked to come back for more. The closeness of the Boardwalk is also great fun if you have adolescent kids. Only criticism is that it would have been nice if they had thought to provide the renter with some basic written information on the house and nearby joints.

Denver, CODisappointing

We stayed at the Black Pearl for over a week and found the location to be nice. However, many items & photos listed in the description were not accurate. The view is actually 50% blocked by the overgrowth of the front bushes and the "rich velvet jewel tones" of the house were actually worn out and dated furniture and too dark for comfort. The "full kitchen" was deceptively listed under the amenities when there is no full size refrigerator and no wall cabinets for dishes and pots. All dishes, glasses, cups, pots & pans and spices were out on the counter or on an open shelf. It makes the kitchen and living room look very cluttered. We had to call Kendall & Potter (K&P;) 3 times because the front door key was too difficult to open the door, the trash, recycle and compost bins had not been emptied, and the old dishwasher door was broken. Even the BBQ grill was left filthy and when I complained about it, K&P; responded with inappropriate irritation at us. If fact, the K&P; staff member called us back on our home telephone instead of mobile - they should know we are on vacation in Santa Cruz, obviously if we are at the rental property!! Talk about misleading, even the amenity under Entertainment that says "video library", was actually 4 videos in the laundry room. The king bed was listed as "top of the line" when that was not true either. I would not recommend this cottage for a rental until some upgrades have been made, and I would not recommend renting with Kendall & Potter as their staff know nothing about customer service, courtesy or professionalism.

We apologize for your disappopinting experience.. Here is the reponse directly from the Owner of the home.
Our site does not show that there is a CD player, but a DvD player, which is built into the TV. We do seem to have list some of our DvD's as the summer has progressed, so we will delete the video library box from our listing.
The front garden is a beautiful landscape and garden with deep blue hummingbird sages, lavender and some taller yellow and pink tea tree bushes that provide a bit of privacy from the front sidewalk.
The beds are very new and are firm, and that may not suit everyone.
There is a large new wolf-type stainless gas range, but we only have 2 counter high fridges, due to space issues. We will clarify this on the site for future reference.
We have always found our property managers to be very responsive, as in this case where they went out to meet and show the guest how to use the front door key, the same day as it was reported, and also sent someone right out to repair the dishwasher door. The guest arrived the day before city trash pickup, and so yes the outside cans were out on the curb waiting for the pickup. All said, it is a cottage type rental, nit a fancy new, granite and stainless type rental, and has a lot of character. most of our guests enjoy the property and we hope you will too!

If it's the boring predictability of the Hilton you want, you've come to the wrong place. The Black Pearl is more like Bilbo Baggins' hobbit house with wifi - all the amenities in a fantasy setting. The panoramic ocean view, the English garden, and the fireplace big enough to hold a hobbit's stew pot were our favorites, but the open kitchen and surprisingly deep wooden hot tub weren't far behind. The location was perfect. too. We were able to walk everywhere: the harbor, the Boardwalk, the Wharf, lots of good restaurants and a great little natural history museum. The Black Pearl is a get-away we'll never tire of getting away to. We highly recommend it.

Birmingham, ALStayed many times; Black Pearl needs a facelift.
Left on 08/17/2011 for a stay in July 2011
My family has stayed at Black Pearl several times in the past and have recommended it. It was owned by Bev. We were thrilled to find it on the rental market through your management group. Things were not the same. It was a hassle to drive to your rental company for keys. Before there was the keyless entry. But, we know that this is standard procedure and just accepted it.
When we arrived we found that there were cobwebs everywhere,i.e., under the sinks with dead spiders. The cobwebs outside on the patio lights were so thick that the light barely shown.
The blinds in the master bedroom were in disrepair and one of the windows would not open.
Light bulbs were burned out in several lamps and there were no extra bulbs in the house.
Some of the dishes were chipped.
The freezer section of the refrigerator located under the dishes needed a good cleaning.
The shower curtain in the main bathroom was mildewed and needed to be replaced. It would also be nice to have a television in the main room so that if the weather is bad the family can watch a show together. It is not condusive to everyone watching the tv in the master bedroom as there is not even a chair in the room.
Also, the beds in the two secondary bedrooms are so large that we virtually could not get a suitcase into one of the rooms. It was hard to maneuver.
We did call the next morning about the master bedroom window and the lightbulbs. The maintenance man came and fixed the window (there may be some rot going on at the bottom of the window) and brought new lightbulbs. He was extremely nice.
We noted all of these things and actually a few more on the sheet I turned in upon checking out. Our family loves this house and the view is beyond anything you could find anywhere else. Please make sure either Kendall or the owner takes better care of it. We hope to hear back from you that these simple things are taken care of and that more attention will be paid to this gem. Thank you. -

For the price we paid, whoever owns this property could afford a litte remodeling to put in a decent sized refrigerator to match the beautiful 5 burner stove and multiple ovens, and all the other wonderful amenities of this very cozy cottage.

Very nice, comfortable, clean, well-stocked cottage on the beach. Sometimes some loud foot traffic outside, especially bothersome when late at night. Good location otherwise, near (walking distance) but not too near to the boardwalk.

San JoseBeautiful property in a great location!
Left on 08/05/2009 for a stay in July 2009
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Black Pearl. The view is to die for and the short drive to Boardwalk, Mystery Spot, stores etc. made it all the more convenient. Its right atop the Seabright beach which is one of the more beautiful beaches in Santa Cruz.
The house is old and perhaps could be a little better maintained on the outside esp the front yard that was kind-of overgrown. But that did add a charm of its own from the meticulously maintained homes we came from in San Jose. The inside could use a deep cleaning service and the fact that there is no wireless or long distance calling available should be mentioned in the literature sent to prospective tenants. -

This is a gorgeous home in a great location. Pricey but well worth it if
you are an architecture buff. Fantastic gardens and charm plus. From
the rounded front door to the stone fireplace and the cosy master
bedroom we loved this house and would love to stay there even if it
didn't have an incredible view and great beach access. Well stocked
and supplied with everything you need and many extras. Great
getaway!
