My husband and two small children (3yo and 7 month old) recently stayed at Suitable Digs in Santa Fe. We had an excellent time! The place was beautiful and unique, as well as very comfortable. Lisa was an absolute joy, and my whole family felt very relaxed and happy while staying with her at Suitable Digs. If you are looking for a far superior experience to a hotel, this is your place. I used to live in Santa Fe many years ago, and staying at Suitable Digs felt like coming home. It is the quintessential Santa Fe experience, and Lisa is the best!

A friend and I stayed in the bunkhouse for 6 days and enjoyed it hugely. It felt like home. Lisa was very warm, helpful and hospitable. After a full day at the workshop we were in Santa Fe to attend, it was great to return to Suitable Digs for the night. If I ever find myself in Santa Fe again, I would be very happy to stay with Lisa. And it was great that Lisa is so environmentally responsible while providing the high level of comfort we can enjoy at Suitable Digs.

Cascade, ColoradoA Getaway For Those adventurous, Expressive Souls!
Left on 01/24/2013 for a stay in September 2012
I came to Suitable Digs for the 20th time or so...this time, with my fairly new boyfriend. We were still in the early stages of getting to know each other and basking in such beautiful and lively surroundings, that I learned some new things about him (one can't help but express themselves openly while visiting Suitable Digs).
The interest and the pleasure he took in retro, vintage style items was new to me--and only enhanced by our getting to stay in the unique classic, the Spartan. We were already excited by the incredible vegetable and fruit gardens growing in this desert Eden, alongside the various and fascinating water catchment, solar and other energy-conserving systems. So much to see and take in!
But hen we stepped into the Spartan for the first time, wow...he came alive in a new and different way than I had seen before. His eyes gleamed with wonder, like a little boy on the first eve of Chanukah. The trailer was adorned in time period style, authentic in its original form with all the little extras that Lisa had taken the time and painstaking effort to locate and attach, no distance too far or too wide, no fixture unaccounted for.
My beau settled in on the couch to read, out loud, several pages of Red Sky at Morning, a 1968 novel by Richard Bradford that takes place in New Mexico. He laughed and reminisced all over again, as he had when he first read it years ago.
That evening, we sat in chairs on the patio outside the Spartan, gazing at the bright moonlit sky and feeling dreamy about where we had landed together. I recall the moonlight as it shone into the Spartan and landed on soft pillows, just as the warm morning sunlight welcomed itself into our cozy abode to gently awaken us the next day.
Being at Suitable Digs for the 21st time was just as familiar as ever...and at the same time, it was as unexpected and fresh as traveling to a completely unfamiliar exotic destination for the first time. The innovative air that always exists there, remains. -

We had an incredible stay at the Bunkhouse and felt like it was a home away from home. Our host, Lisa, was lovely, taking us on a tour of the beautiful property, recommending her favorite restaurants, etc. We loved the beautiful gardens, the stars at night, the easy access to downtown Santa Fe, and even our composting toilet. If you want to see the ultimate in green living, then you must stay here. If you want to see hand-built greenhouses, recycled granite paths, and abundant fruit trees/vegetable gardens, then you must stay here.

Left on 09/19/2012 for a stay in September 2012
After our harrowing 9 hour drive to Santa Fe we arrived late in the wee hours of the night at Suitable Digs only to find the owner/proprietor, Lisa Sarenduc, awake to greet us with genuine warmth.
We were looking for a quiet retreat way from the downtown Santa Fe plaza scene but only a few minutes away from town. And we found it in the private casitas of Suitable Digs among the sweet gardens and meandering walkways that would suddenly open into hidden seating areas of magentas, reds, oranges and turquoise golds; each successive oasis uniquely designed amid the pinions.
And the Spartan...oh my!!
What we did not expect to find and what will bring us back was the zero chemical and fragrance cleaning products and soaps, the ecologically minded design and use of the property, the architecture, the zero pesticide and herbicide acreage, and the proprietor's way of naturally warming your heart without invading your privacy. We will be back and consider Suitable Digs a home away from home. -

Suitable Digs is not about service. It is about quality of life, friendship and taking care of Mother Earth. It is about learning how to be responsible stewards of our world. It is about laughter...and wine...about coyotes howling in the wind...about hummingbirds zooming around you...about ripe strawberries and melting figs..it is about conversations and new friends and new beginnings...It is also more than a suitable place to call home..it is a little bit of paradise on Earth.

When visiting Santa Fe, there is only one place that I could recommend to stay and that is: Suitable Digs.
If you are looking for a peaceful and enjoyable place to stay, this is it.
Upon arrival you are greeted by a warm, genuine and friendly smile by your hostess Lisa whom in her gardening attire welcomes you to her home and proudly shows you the facilities.
Suitable Digs is only 10 minute away to Santa Fe's Main Square. It is so close to the City center but yet away from the traffic and crowds of the normal day to day city's activities.
At night this place is truly enchanting. It is so peaceful and so quite that one could really lay back, relax and enjoy a glass of wine by the grape arbor under the stars.
The underground drinking well water tastes so pure and fresh and it is so crystal clear that puts any bottled water to shame.
All rooms are equiped with a kitchenet. Even the 1950's Spartan has a full size refrigerator and galley.
Lisa, the proprietor, has gone above and beyond the call of duty to preserve our fragile earth. Here everything gets recycled. All organic matter goes into the compost pile which she uses to feed her beautiful organic orchard. Water from sinks and showers gets recycled to be used to irrigate surrounding landscape. Rain water gets recycled to irrigate the various fruit trees and vegetable gardens.
Lisa harvest all electricity used at this facility from the wonderful Santa Fe sun.
We always leave Suitable Digs looking forward to our next visit. -

It was a fortuitous day when I arrived at Suitable Digs and met Lisa Sarenduc while attending a three-week blacksmithing course just down the road. The lodging was casual, clean and relaxing with a touch and feel of home and on an extended stay, the feel of home can be important. The surrounding landscape of "The Digs" was amazing with great trails through the desert perfect for hiking, running and viewing the magnificent and stunning Santa Fe sunsets. Also not to be overlooked and worth the stay is the amazing yard Ms. Sarenduc has created with her vision and years of hard work! For any creative person, myself a photographer, the solitude one can experience can be food for the mind and soul. And with solitude aside, only 10 minutes from downtown Santa Fe is a perfect fit for dining, shopping, nightlife, world of the arts and experiencing the wonderful Southwest. Whether it be long-term or short-term, a stay at Suitable Digs fits the bill.

I really love this place. It is a magical, quirky and delightful guest house, made extra special by the proprietor, Lisa, who has an eclectic, exuberant and up-to-date kind of decorating genius that has nothing to do with kiva ovens or adobe, combined with an earth-conscious (but not sanctimonious) philosophy. If you know what to expect and you're the right sort of person, there's no way you could dislike this joint. It's not downtown, but that puts you closer to the desert. You'll need a car and the ride down Chicoma Vista is pretty bumpy, but it's worth the ride. We stayed in the green room and it was super-comfortable and quiet. Let me put it this way-I can't think of another lodging, certainly not in Santa Fe, where you could pay $75 a night and get a deck, a loft bed, a sitting room, and a private bath. Lisa was very helpful with Santa Fe and surrounding area suggestions--Tent Rocks rocks!--for travel and food. Be aware that it's a guest house and not a bed and breakfast; there's a great natural market about a mile and a half down W. Alameda though, so you can go get a bag of freeze dried mangoes and some organic fair trade coffee and bring them back to this solar-powered paradise to feel total immersion in the highest pleasures of the liberal bubble.

If you want to be outside of the hustle bustle of downtown Santa Fe, have
privacy and get a sense of living nearly off the grid in New Mexico this is great. The host is very nice and she is very dedicated to living a sustainable lifestyle and has gardens and even grows fruit trees in a greenhouse. we stayed in the little stand alone Casita and it is very beautifully crafted. It close to the freeway in terms of being easy to get to, but we didn't here any noise, getting downtown is a very quick drive maybe 8 eight minutes and mostly straight down one road.
I recommend it unless you feel a need to be right in the middle of downtown. -

My husband and I had an wonderful stay at sustainable digs...Lisa is a gracious host and we truly feel like we have found a home away from home. She provided invaluable insights as to the sights, trails and local dining recommendations. The interiors of the rental spaces are thoughtful and very comfortable and put us at ease. Beautiful views, hiking trails, and Lisa's lovely gardens all create a unique and inviting retreat. The property is very convenient to the plaza, yet you have the feeling that you are miles and miles away from the city. We arrived planning to stay for two nights and had such a great experience there that we changed our travel plans to extend our stay. We have recommended Lisa's place several times over to family and dear friends. We cannot wait to return for our next visit!

Suitable Digs is a great find in Santa Fe. A short distance from the downtown area, yet far enough away to enjoy a little solitude in the beauty of the area. The accommodations are great. Every detail feels intentional, from the reusable totes provided for grocery shopping to the set up of the lodging in its entirety. It is beautifully designed and decorated, with so much character in a no frills kind of way. The property is gorgeous, and host Lisa is a warm, knowledgeable, and encourages exploration. The B&B;, conveniently located approximately 3.5 miles from downtown Santa Fe, is beautifully designed and the indigenous landscaping is lovely. Left on 02/10/2012 for a stay in September 2011
This past summer I needed a place to stay for a few months with short notice while I worked on special projects. Suitable Digs was already well booked, but Lisa was able to accommodate me by providing me with new digs every few weeks. So I was able to fully experience her sanctuary and was quickly made to feel comfortable and at home. I stayed first in the Bunk House which is a great studio to work and relax. Then off to the Earth room which was beautifully cool and quiet. Then my favorite, the Spartan which is set away from the main accommodations - it felt like I was living a dream out there. At night there was nothing to see but stars.
A quick 15 minutes drive from Downtown and 5 minutes to local shops, Suitable Digs is close to amenities. The location feels like an out of town oasis as it is nestled in a desert juniper landscape with views of the Santa Fe mountains. Easy to absorb the calm and expansive energy of the place.
But the real beauty of Suitable Digs is the owner, she is an inspiration and is interesting and interested in the world. Each day I would break from work to take a walk through the junipers, tour her latest garden project, or chat about food, energy efficiency, plants, or Peru. I highly recommend Suitable Digs for both short and long stays. -

I have traveled all over our country, and the most intriguing place I've stayed is Suitable Digs. Lisa welcomed me, took me to my room-more like an apt/home-, and explained how I could be comfortable, and made herself available for contact. My stay there inspired me to recycle more since Lisa recycles everything. The rooms are made with Earth's products-even the floors! You can't help reconnecting with Mother Earth while there. The grounds are beautifully landscaped and a joy to see and walk through. I plan on returning this year too! I really can't say enough about Lisa and Suitable Digs! Enjoy your stay!

We stayed here during a long weekend trip to Santa Fe in august - our first time seeing New Mexico. Suitable Digs was a perfect choice providing both a unique and charming atmosphere. Every detail of the house and guest rooms are in tune with Lisa's eclectic style and the flourishing gardens surrounding the house are a wonderful reminder of the Eco-friendly living.
Lisa is a wonderful host! She's extremely interesting and great for conversation in addition to offering wonderful advice on places to eat and drink during your stay.
Enjoy a warm cup of coffee on the patio in the morning or have a glass of wine as the sun sets. Suitable Digs is indisputably the best place to stay in Santa Fe. Our only regret was we couldn't stay longer.

My husband and I have stayed at Suitable Digs on four different occasions. The last two visits we stayed in the Sun Room. We love everything about staying at Suitable Digs and I believe the Sun Room is my favorite "suite". On each stay we were there for 8 nights. The fully equiped kitchen allows us to have breakfast at "home" and lunch and dinner as well, when we do not want to try one of Santa Fe's excellent restaurants. The separation of a "living area" allows for bringing friends in for a visit and have places to sit other than on the bed. The room really is configured very comfortably for an extended stay. The grounds of Suitable Digs are beautiful and fun to explore and we can't wait for each visit to discover what new Green feature Lisa has added to the property. It is her attention to her guests and the accomodations, and her love for the property that makes staying with Lisa such fun. We hope we never have to stay anywhere else when we visit Santa Fe.

My husband and I stayed at Suitable Digs in august of 2011 and our only disappointment was not arranging to stay longer! Lisa is genuinely so very friendly and quite knowledgeable about the Santa Fe area. The eclectic style of her unique home is warm, inviting, and offers a secluded and private feel in an area that is very convenient to a multitude of desirable locations. Accommodations are very clean, comfortable, and tranquil. As hikers we especially loved the coming home and relaxing with a bottle of wine in the common area while watching the sun go down behind the distant mountainous views or walking through the garden with a cup of coffee in the early morning taking in the artistic splendors which Lisa has created with her own hands and have to be seen with your own eyes to appreciate. This is indisputably the best place to stay in Santa Fe!

In July 2011 we stayed at Suitable Digs in the Spartan...a true vintage movie experience,,,every day we woke up smiling, learning the ins and outs of the masterful restoration. And so, we met Lisa, who shared a wonderful dinner with us, homegrown figs and all...and learned about permaculture and composting and moving earth. We returned for Christmas and would not change a thing since now, we visit Lisa, And it seemed peculiar to us that when driving back to the Digs, we kept saying 'Let's go home" or "how long before we get home", for that is what Lisa shares with you...her home...and there is no place like home.

A group of four opera goers stayed in the two apartments (Earth Room and Sun Room) for three days in august and we had a wonderful time. We were attracted by the green environment, but many other things added to our enjoyment.
Lisa is a very well organized and considerate hostess! She provided a manual in each room listing dozens of movies we could watch for the asking, listing dozens of local restaurants along with their strengths, providing details on how to operate the equipment in the apartments, listing local venues and events that we might like to see, etc. I have never found such a well thought out guide in any other motel, hotel or B&B.; She kept in touch by email before we arrived and gave detailed driving directions. She is an amazingly competent and helpful hostess.
The two apartments were delightful. The beds were comfortable, the kitchens are very workable, an array of magazines and books are available to read, the dining table works great for 4 or 5 people. An extraordinary woodworker designed and executed the apartments, layouts, closets, shelves, showers, etc. Wherever the eye lighted, there was interesting artesian work to appreciate. And they were spotlessly clean when we arrived and kept that way each day during our stay.
One of the nicest things about the location, is its rural nature. This was the closest I have ever been to getting a "feel" for what it would be like to live there. The wonderful views of New Mexico skies -- stars so close you'd swear you could touch them, spectacular sunrises and sunsets, birds chirping and small animals around the exteriors of the buildings on the property, all gave a good idea of what New Mexico is like. And yet, it took no more than 15 minutes to get into downtown Santa Fe. This was the nicest vacation experience we could have asked for -- sophisticated restaurants and opera at night, outdoor experience during the day. -

I had the great pleasure and good fortune to spend 10 days at Lisa's Suitable Digs this past fall.
My home away from home was the Spartan, an immaculate and meticulously restored 1948 Spartan trailer which has led me to the believe in the possibility of time travel and its restorative and peaceful effects.
Nestled in the quite and beautiful gardens of her property you feel miles and years away from anything; when in fact everything is only minutes away.
The serenity and amenities of the Spartan are matched only by the warmth and hospitality of Lisa who made me feel more a neighbor and a friend than a guest or a customer.
I can not recommend highly enough finding and taking the time to treat yourself to an experience as unique and enjoyable as a stay at Suitable Digs. -

Left on 01/04/2012 for a stay in November 2011
Traveling can be dicey for a person like myself, who is recovering from "multiple chemical sensitivities" (MCS). The hotel I had originally booked was supposed to be chemical-free, but the aggregate of detergents and perfumes in the rooms and hallways sickened me within an hour. Thank goodness I was able to get a room at Suitable Digs. The proprietor's commitment to "earthy," organic, natural living made it an oasis of healthy frangrances and energies. The lodging itself breathes with the life and smells of roots, herbs, vegetables that Lisa grows so caringly in her gardens--which, next to the eclectically-decorated main bulding, are her obvious pride and joy. The lodging seems off the beaten path, and in some ways it is: being away from the highway and urban center, Suitable Digs lets one appreciate the New Mexico sunrises and sunsets on native soil among native plants. And yet I found it a quick, easy, and scenic drive from the lodging to the historic downtown. For all the above reasons, I can recommend Suitable Digs to any traveler who values natural beauty and a well-kept, eco-friendly lodging. But the most impressive aspect of my stay was the interest Lisa took in learning about my specific needs (as someone recovering, again, from MCS) and accommodating them. She took time to read books on the subject (which I had brought along with me), and we talked at length about health challenges and chemicals and therapies and the environment. I feel as if I saw enough of Santa Fe and don't need to visit it again, but I'd return to spend more time with Lisa and to measure the progress she has since made on her gardens and on her increased commitments to organic, chemical-free living. So: If any Santa Fe traveler has allergies or sensitivities of any kind, I'd heartily recommend that they email or phone Lisa, explain him- or herself, and see what she has to offer. Want peace and health and a sunrise vista? Stay at Suitable Digs!

As always, Lisa Sarenduc, was the perfect hostess. And during my stay at Suitable Digs in the Earth Room over the Thanksgiving holiday I was able to prepare all of the dishes I was to take to my daughter's house for our holiday meal. I was no more than 10 minutes from anyplace I needed to be during my stay, and could dash back to Lisa's place for time away from the crowd when I needed some peaceful, quiet time. Lisa's meticulous attention to detail means I have everything I need, all the time.

I stayed at Suitable Digs for four days and it was very refreshing. Lisa was very accommodating and even picked me up from the Santa Fe train station, which allowed me to not have to get a rental car (only needed one trip to the grocery store). I was in Santa Fe to attend a blacksmithing course at Turley Forge, which I could simply walk to from Suitable Digs.
I stayed in the Bunk House, which had everything I needed, including a small kitchen area. It was an amazing personal space and I loved that I could come in for the evening and just fall into reading, writing, and reflection. It was a fantastic place to come back to and relax after a long day at the forge. -

This is the second time I stay at Lisa's and the only thing I have to say is awesome! Lisa is a very friendly lady and the place she offers is excellent if you are looking to relax after a long day at the office or if you are only looking to relax. Lisa's place is the right place to meet great people and to eat some good food. She loves cooking and also loves if you cook for her. Suitable Digs is a very clean place and Lisa goes way out of her way to provide you with Ecological and green products for you to use.
I would highly recommend this place for any type of people. The only advice I would have for people is to have their own vehicle or transportation mean because her place is outside of town and you will need to walk about 25 minutes to reach town. -

My friend and I stayed at Suitable Digs in the middle of November and it was one of the most pleasant and unique experiences I've ever had on vacation. The house is beautiful and each room in the property was charming in its own way. The best part about Suitable Digs is the owner, Lisa, who was the consumate host. She recommended some of the best restaurants I've ever eaten at and researched and printed out different sight seeing activities that proved to be wonderful experiences. Because of Lisa, we were able to experience some amazing parts of Santa Fe and the beautiful surrounding areas that we never would have seen otherwise. I would highly recommend anyone stay here that is looking to experience the magic Santa Fe has to offer; she'll take good care of you.

I had the pleasure of staying at Suitable Digs in September of 2011. I was passing through Santa Fe on a long road trip from Los angeles to Dallas. The one thing that made it bearable was stopping here for a day and two nights. I rented the least expensive room and was still floored by the comfort of my stay. Lisa, the owner, was highly accommodating with my late check-in time and was nothing but sweet and helpful.
The bed was comfortable, the room was warm and the shower was hot. Not only is the house sustainable (complete with solar panels), but it is also filled to the brim with eye candy. Each room is an eclectic mix of color, style and architecture.
The house is about 15 minutes outside of Santa Fe so it's perfect for those looking for something just far enough off the beaten path to wake up to birds singing and the sun rising over the trees. I can't say enough about this place except that you're truly missing out if you're in Santa Fe and don't check out Suitable Digs!

My husband and I stayed this Christmas at suitable digs. We arrived late after fitting a snow storm, Lisa welcomed us smiling and sweeping snow to our doorway to our warm and charming cottage. She even helped carry our bags in. The parking is good, and there is patio and garden space for each cottage. We didn't use it in the snow but if it would have been warmer we would have. It was very inviting.
The cottage was private and fully equipped, (even had a blender). I loved the kitchen it was a perfect. We are foodies and like to cook a few of our own meals and this kitchen had everything we needed. The decor and one room cottage are true Santa Fe style bright and open. Lisa, is friendly and available.
The cottage is a little off the beaten path, set in a quiet and scenic setting. The drive to the plaza is straight forward, easy and not too far. A perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday living.
What would I change...very very little. Maybe a bigger TV for the TV watchers.
Thank you Lisa, we wish you much success in 2012 and look forward to staying with you again.

We spent a week at Lisa's terrific and "green" compound in Sant Fe. Her digs are more than suitable, they are super! Lisa's place is virtually self sustaining; solar panels produce 100 percent of her electrical needs, roof rainwater is is collected and piped to storage tanks, and gardens produce a vast array of veggies (ask Lisa for the garden tour). Our week in the colorful and artistically decorated Sun Room was very comfortable thanks to all the thoughtful appointments including a reusable shopping bag for grocery shopping, all the utensils and cooking gear, a large collection of movies to borrow, colorful furnishings, and attractive outdoor seating area.
Suitable Digs has a rural feel but is well located for everything you would want to do in the area. Lisa is a wonderful hostess and a great local resource (directions, where to eat, what to see, what to do, etc). We hope to come back. -

A recent trip to Santa Fe allowed us the good fortune to stay at Suitable Digs, which, simply put, is one of the most charming and tranquil places I've ever experienced. The Digs' owner, Lisa, has created an oasis of (nearly literal) off-the-grid living, demonstrating that environmentally-conscious accommodations are not only possible and practical, but provide a vastly richer experience for the traveler. While located only a few miles from Santa Fe's historic central Plaza, it feels even farther removed from the city's crowds than it actually is - its sole access is by means of a bumpy county road, enhancing the impression of remoteness and serenity of the place - yet Suitable Digs is within easy reach of restaurants, stores, and the city's many attractions. Every inch of Suitable Digs bears Lisa's thoughtful (and whimsical) touch; her efforts in creating this remarkable, self-sustainable place are visionary and almost miraculous. (Be sure to ask Lisa for a tour of the property, and if possible of her lovingly restored 1948 Spartan trailer - a marvel of restoration and a testament to her dedication!) Lisa herself - a wonderful, warm, knowledgeable person - is a kind, gracious host who was endlessly patient with our many questions (and requests for directions, and frantic calls about late arrival, mislaid keys, etc.); her generous suggestions and advice greatly enhanced our visit. I would be remiss if I didn't mention the memorable experience of staying at "green” accommodations (my first time), which has only inspired us to implement more self-sustainable practices within our own home. Suitable Digs is so much more than simply suitable; it's a beautiful, unique alternative to yet another chain hotel, and an exceptionally inviting, relaxing - and perhaps even enriching - choice in accommodations.

Though the hiking and site seeing were incredible, it was great to come 'home' after a long day out and about to this wonderful oasis Lisa has created in the desert. Lisa is the 'hostess with the mostess': never obtrusive but always engaged, enchanting and so interesting. Truly a gift. Thank you Lisa for building this place and inviting the world - it was great to get to know you and partake in the little piece of heaven you've carved out. I will most definitely be returning. Living in Sweden, where environmental issues are extremely important, I chose suitable digs for my stay in Santa FĂ©.
Location suited me very well, and Lisa waited-up for me, until 1am, when I finally arrived at her door-step after a 25 hour journey. I felt more like a member of her family, than a guest. Lisa is firmly committed to make a difference providing lodging experiences that are far above the average hotel or apartment stays.
The apartment was equipped with everything I needed - no plastic shopping bags are allowed - Lisa provides special ones. There were instructions for shopping, entertainment, sight seeing - excursions - I was never bored during my 4 week stay.
We had interesting conversations - Lisa made me feel at home, and answered a million questions, introduced me to several friends and neighbors.
I had several plans for returning - however, circumstances made me postpone my plans. I would only stay at Suitable Digs - and I rather change my travel plans to suit the vacancy. -

This was an unforgettable experience, that has meant the world to us and our families. I think we have all agreed to return at some point to enjoy Suitable Digs once again, and the wonderful hospitality Lisa has to offer! -

Lisa has done amazing work on this beautiful property - growing food, flowers, creating wonderful spaces, and infusing everything with her own special quirkiness and eye for color. In addition, it's the "greenest" place I've stayed, with composting toilets, a solar array, and ingenious water cachement devices. It's ten minutes away from town, yet it feels like a different world of wonder. I just cannot recommend it highly enough - and I am Uber-picky.
