Additional Location Information

Manzanillo which is complementary of the Mal Pais/ Santa Teresa area. Here you won’t find the hustle and bustle that is associated with most of Costa Rica’s beach areas. You will however find things the way they were almost a hundred years ago, except for the few small businesses that have been popping up recently which are slightly ahead of the crowd for a perfect Costa Rican vacation.
There are some rental homes, eco lodge or villas nestled in the hills overlooking the Pacific, along with a few Cabins and individual rooms for rent, plus a series of small restaurants with a couple of local Bars along the beach, so life in general here in Manzanillo is slow and easy! The white sand beaches here are quiet most of the time and the Ocean is calm with very little wave action for surf beginners and reef surf for the most experimented. There are no currents due to barrier reefs that run along the coast in this area which makes for some great Kayaking.
Tidal Pools are abundant here where it is possible to cool off, swim and snorkel while admiring the many colorful fish that get trapped at low tide. For those with a little experience, you can go out and catch some Lobsters for dinner. Upon visiting Manzanillo for the first time, you become aware of the nature and wildlife this area holds. Monkeys abound, and there are many small birds, including curious Raccoons, Squirrels and Deer to be found.
From January through March every year you can see migrating Whales along the coast that are in transit and on their way to the Galapagos Islands in Ecuador.
The Ocean Sunsets here in Manzanillo are brilliant! Manzanillo has also become famous on the Peninsula de Nicoya for their yearly Sand Castle Contest which attracts local and foreign participants from around the World. This is quite an event and great family fun that has been held for 15 years now, so if you are visiting the area between March and April, be sure to check out the dates in the Peninsula de Nicoya for a fun time that is guaranteed for all!
Just a short walk to the North along the beach you’ll find a series of rivers, the Manzanillo River, the Chapeton River and a little further up, the Bongo River which make up the Ario-Caletas Wildlife Refuge which protects the egg-laying of Turtles, along with other animals in the zone. If you are looking for a calm and peaceful atmosphere while on vacation, Manzanillo is a welcome relief after visiting the hustle and bustle of her neighbors to the South.Services that you will found in town:
