Stunning villa - but a few cautions for other travellers...

Left on 07/30/2011 for a stay in July 2011

Villa Capri, also known as La Caprina or Villa Sole di Capri is a stunningly beautiful villa that enjoys breathtaking sea views to the island of Capri and sunsets from a gorgeous colonial-style veranda.
We visited in July 2011 as a party of six adults and were delighted with the accommodation. Although not large, bedrooms have a lovely feel and although placed together on one floor are private. They have lovely views, reasonable wardrobes and French doors out onto the balconies. Bathrooms are clean and everything in the villa works – there is plenty of hot water, a good Wifi connection and comfortable beds.
The villa is also well furnished with good-sized leather sofas and plenty of areas where everyone in a large party can chill out. It does not have air conditioning but although we had hot sunny weather every day, the villa is relatively cool and has great automatic blinds that block out the sunshine and let some fresh air through.
The pool area is idyllic with one of the largest and cleanest villa pools we have ever seen. The terraced gardens are incredibly well kept with many flowers and pool furniture is plentiful and of good quality. There is also a handy shower/toilet in the pool area, an outside lounge under shade and a fridge near the pool to keep drinks on hand.
Some points we feel to be useful to other travellers:
A caretaker resides within the grounds. While he is helpful to a point, we had not been made aware he would be there. We also found his habit of popping up to 'help' became a nuisance. We were also told we must have a ‘maid’ as part of the ‘contract’ (which appeared to be this male caretaker) come into the villa to ‘clean’ every day from 8am to 1pm – something we found intrusive and unnecessary. Fortunately, after complaining to Italian Breaks – and after a number of heated emails and international phone calls – we managed to get this reduced to twice a week coming in later in the day with a delightful female cleaner.
Access to the villa – situated at the end of a very narrow, steep country lane is hazardous. A small car might be fine but as this is a large villa advertised to cater for up to 14 people, many might have a larger vehicle as we did. In the end we parked it on a grass verge further up the road but this meant a hike up a huge incline every time we went out. We are all fit but how any disabled person or anyone with any sort of mobility issue could holiday at this villa is beyond us as the villa itself is also on different levels with many internal steps.
People should note the pool cannot be seen at all from the villa so you cannot keep an eye on anyone using the pool by themselves. Getting to the pool actually entails a short walk from the villa down a series of steep steps and through a number of closed gates.
The kitchen, although adequate, is very basic. The kettle did not work, there was no toaster as advertised and there are only tiny little cups. The oven and fridge are quite small for such a big villa and there is barely any work surface area. Fortunately we dined out a lot as even cooking simple meals for six people was a challenge.
Inside the villa there are also a lot of ornaments and glass tables that could prove hazardous to children running around.
The villa could also benefit from a proper visitor’s book with a list of supermarkets and other essentials - although small basic shops are a five-minute drive down the lane.
However, despite some shortcomings, we thoroughly enjoyed our holiday. Sorrento – a 15-minute drive away via hair-pin bends – is lovely with great restaurants. And we would still recommend this villa as a super holiday destination especially if like us you are a family comprising older adults and want to get away from it all.

      All you need

Left on 10/09/2010 for a stay in September 2010

this villa is great..got everything you need. We were a group of friends and managed to live it all, from chilling in the lounge, sunbathing by the pool, making pizza and bbq in the garden, glass of wine at the sunset looking at capri from or balcony, playing and partying in the game room..the villa has its unique character, the guy owns it must be really into boats, and he has done a great job in making it so...one minute you're on the hills, next you dream of sailing the sea..just make sure you have a car for those moments to drive to the harbour
