CambridgeLovely views and family fun
Left on 09/03/2011 for a stay in August 2011
We were two families with 4 kids aged 6-11. We had a great time together staying in the main house for 10 days or so. The hosts were very helpful and considerate. They even sent a forgotten teddy bear back to England for us.
The place is in a lovely rural setting, off the beaten track. It is higher up and cooler than the coast. When the sun burst through the clouds, the views were fantastic and the pool area become a beautiful spot to hang out. I particularly enjoyed visiting the local village on market day and fresh bread, delivered daily. -

We enjoyed our stay at the lovely Main House, perfectly located in a nice surrounding. Enjoyed the sun by day, and lighted the fireplace at the evening. Very hospitality owner, and every morning there were fresh breadrolls in our kitchen.

Lovely location in the hills. Old classic house with space for adults and children alike. The house in set within heavily wooded secluded grounds Great swimming pool. The outstanding feature was the hospitality and kindness shown by Jeremy and his family to make our stay such a pleasant experience.

We (four adult, three young children) had a very good time in the Quinta. The house is spacious and very well equipped. There is plenty of space around the house, a nice garden and a good swimming pool.

LondonTruly A Wonderful Place!
Left on 04/25/2010 for a stay in April 2010
Jeremy was so helpful, before our stay, upon arrival and during - a very congenial host. 10 of us (4 adults, 6 children aged 2 - 10yrs) had a fantastic time in his wonderfully spacious 1930s villa sited in its own grounds in a peaceful location with stunning views, made all the more interesting by the bookcases full of old books - one of the ten year olds is now an avid Agatha Christie reader! The kitchen is large and well equipped, the soft beds are the comfiest we've ever slept in and the daily bread roll delivery was much appreciated. Hiring a car is a must to get the most out of the island and to get to the supermarket. The pool was still a bit too chilly for the grown ups (it was early April) but the children didn't seem to mind! It was a great place for them to explore with a freedom that's hard to give in London, so a big 'tick' from them and there are a few friendly places to eat quite nearby which was handy. You must try barbeque chicken which comes on a huge skewer - delicious! We thoroughly recommend this beautiful place to relax and step back in time a little which is complete with all the mod-cons we can't do without (dishwasher, washing machine, enormous fridge, etc.). We wish you every success Jeremy and we'll be back.

NottinghamHost was kindness and discredtion personified, wonderful villa!
Left on 04/11/2010 for a stay in December 2009
A fantastic place to spend a family Christmas, with more space than advertised, incredible surroundings and beautiful antique furniture! We had fresh rolls brought to us every morning, "on the house", and the kitchen was amazingly well equipped with an enormous 6 ring cooker and plenty of crockery in all shapes and sizes. The villa itself has colonial charm, with dark wooden floors, beautiful and user-friendly furniture, and enough sitting areas for all 12 of us not to feel we were on top of each other at all! Jeremy (a very softly spoken and pleasant gentleman in the proper meaning of the word)speaks exceptionally good English and as we discovered is also the Norwegian consul (my parents who were over from Norway were particularly thrilled with this!), one of very many duties, I believe. The local village is within walking distance and there is quite a well-equipped grocery store, as well as a very good supermarket about 10 minutes drive away(my only bit of advice about shopping is not to buy your toiletries in Madeira, they are all imported and therefore very expensive!). If you like being slightly off the beaten track and getting more of a non-touristy flavour, this is a wonderful place to be. It is definitely cooler than further down towards Funchal, but the benefits of the villa far out-weighed that for us! We did swim, almost every day, although "bracing" is probably the best word to describe swimming there at this time of year. The two good-sized bathrooms were great, both with bath and shower, as well as basins in most bedrooms, and toilets downstairs. We hired a couple of cars and managed a fair bit, there is so much to see, and the levadas are great, we had grandpa at 77 and the youngest at 2 all enjoying the levada walks, even the tunnels. Thanks again to Jeremy.

LondonWonderful house, superb gardens, we will be back
Left on 03/24/2010 for a stay in September 2009
Quinta das Colmeias was perfect for our family and friends, the owners provided everything we needed including wood for the fire and basics on our arrival. The house is very large and comfortable, easy-going on small children and filled with exciting old games and books. Bedlinen etc very good and we had everything we needed in the house. Outside there is a whole natural world to discover in the grounds, ample lawn for us to play football, swimming pool, and good for long walks in a totally peaceful and natural setting. The village of Santo da Serra is within walking distance and if you play golf there is the amazing santo da Serra golf course which was great for us to play 27 holes, and the kids had a lesson with Luke the english-speaking PGA pro there. We will certainly be back to Quinta das Colmeias an recommend it to our friends.
