Description from the owner

The peaceful village of Megalochori makes a much sought after and appreciated alternative to the bustling and jostling of the busy city of Fira. Mansion Sophia, a rare find, is a just short stroll from the central village square with its pretty churches and picturesque Venetian bell towers. The village, with its winding cobbled pathways, is free of traffic. The imposing large wooden entrance gates of Mansion Sophia conceal a secluded and pretty private courtyard, complete with the recent addition of a swimming pool. Double doors lead directly from the courtyard into a spacious lounge and dining area with its superb high vaulted ceilings and o...Read more

Only 6 km from the busy town of Fira, it is another world and an ideal holiday base for those who want to relax and enjoy the many attractions of Santorini from a different perspective.
Megalochori was inhabited by many feudal landlords of the island at the past. These merchants and landlords became wealthy exporting the unique Vinsanto wine, which the island still produces. Megalochori had a particularly strong link with Odessa in Russia and many of the church bells which still toll in the village today are from Russia.
This traditional settlement has retained its charm and authenticity despite the rapid touristic development of Santorini. Its traffic-free cobblestone streets, its venetian bell towers and its lovely square with the chic restaurants make Megalochori a premier destination for the concerning visitor of Santorini..
The location of the village is perfect, as the most significant touristic attractions and the best beaches of the island are only minutes’ drive away..
Megalochori has also a lovely unspoiled caldera part with no buildings, perfect for hiking with magnificent vistas of the famous volcano and sunset..
The traditional village of Megalochori is not widely known as it is not touristic and remains one of the hidden treasures of Santorini for those who prefer to relax and enjoy an original Greek experience, away from the tourist masses..

      Memorable holidays

Left on 05/06/2013 for a stay in May 2013

Very nice stay. The whole village is one of the most picturesque villages in the Greek islands, where all the houses - most of them recently renovated with colorful Cycladic style gardens - are set amphitheatrically around the central square of the village. Villa Sophia is amazing. Although it is fully renovated and luxurious, they have maintained all the details of the original house that was built almost 150 years ago. We did feel that we traveled back in time. Some of the best family pictures were taken in this house. We will definitely miss the breakfast in our private garden as well as the very stylish swimming pool in the black-rock veranda of the villa. The service was very good and the staff was attentive and tactful. We did find the tranquility and the privacy that were looking for, although the distance from all the "must see" places of the island is 10 minutes by car (except from Oia that took us appx 30 minutes). We will definitely try to repeat it soon.

      Best choice made!

Left on 01/24/2013 for a stay in September 2013

Megalochori proved to be the perfect spot for our group!

The full Santorini Heritage package made our trip so headache free - the car, their assistance, the whole team! They gave us excellent suggestions ! We are still talking about Psaraki - the seafood place in Vlychada and our catamaran trip !

They delivered everything that was posted in their site! The pictures do not lie - the place is great !They made our first trip to Greece quite memorable and we now look forward to making our way back again!

      Great Vacation Villa

Left on 10/17/2012 for a stay in October 2012

We stayed at Mansion Sophia for five nights the first week of October and had an incredible stay. The pool and terrace were wonderful for enjoying the 80 degree weather, and we took advantage of the kitchen to cook lunch and dinner a few days. The villa is spacious, and the concierge, maid, gardener, and pool cleaner could not have been nicer.

Megalochori is a charming village. After visiting Fira, Oia, Pyrgos, and Kamari, we were so happy we stayed there. Three great restaurants are located around the village square, and they are no more than a minute or two walk from the villa. Numerous vineyards are nearby as well. Megalochori was also a great base from which to explore the island. The villa is very near parking which is convenient if you rent a car (like we did), and Santorini Heritage provided lots of great suggestions for things to do on the island.

All in all, we could not have asked for a better vacation.

Gorgeous villa in a gorgeous island..

Left on 04/24/2012 for a stay in October 2011

My husband, my baby girl and myself spend 4 nights in Mansion Sophia last October and we absolutely loved our time there. The concierge, Jackie, was very helpful and helped us to arrange some excellent activities: I totally recommend the boat trip to the caldera bay during sunset! Amazing experience..
The villa itself is beautiful, spotlessly cleaned daily and with tasteful decoration, in a way that makes you feel relaxed and on holiday mood..
We appreciated having two bedrooms so that our daughter could sleep in her own room, and the kitchen served us well for preparing breakfast every morning as well as a few dinners.
The pool is just gorgeous and the villa location is really convenient to a lot of fantastic beaches as well as other attractions of the island. The closest beach is about 10 minutes drive (called Vlichada?) and is quite spectacular. If you want more cosmopolitan setting, you must go to Perivolos beach, 15 minute away from the villa, with all the nice beach clubs, although not many were open during the period we visited (low season). Nevertheless the weather was lovely so we were able to see most of the island, thanks to the free car rental which came with the villa.
Santorini is gorgeous, as was the villa. We had a fantastic time and we hope we can go back soon..

A dreamy wedding, an amazing place...

Left on 02/16/2012 for a stay in September 2011

I had always had a dream to be married in the incredibly romantic Santorini and last year this came true with the help of the guys at Santorini Heritage (thanks Takis!). Not only they arranged for our accommodation in the beautiful Mansion Sophia, but also they took care of all formalities so we could be married in the yard of an u-n-b-e-l-i-e-v-a-b-l-e chapel named Stavros which is located at the cliff (Caldera) facing the volcano and the sunset... They also arranged a private dinner for our 15 guests at the absolutely breathtaking courtyard of our villa, by the pool, with candle lights and romantic music..
We had the time of our lives and we will definitely come back..

      A Wonderful Retreat!

Left on 10/26/2011 for a stay in August 2011

We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and I can recommend this villa highly. We had a wonderful private concierge who was unbelievably helpful and booked a catamaran cruise which was the highlight of our stay. The villa itself was lovely and everyone (the maid, handyman, the concierge and the owner) were all so obliging and helpful. We enjoyed the pool immensely - it truly is a lovely pool and the villa is lovely and very private - a really wonderful retreat.

      A lovely get-away on Santorini

Left on 06/04/2011 for a stay in May 2011

The villa Sophia was absolutely charming, lovely interiors and exteriors, flowers everywhere. The service, from the pick-up at the airport to the initial tour of the house to the daily housekeeping, was excellent.

The village is central to almost everywhere but you can escape the hustle and bustle of Santorini to the delightful courthouse and the lovely pool.

      Relaxing Experience

Left on 03/18/2011 for a stay in July 2010

We stayed in Sophia, a complete dream-house, located in a traditional quiet village. Like living in our own private residence. Away from cars, traffic, loud music. Kids adored the in yard swimming pool and we had the chance to relax, somedays we skipped the swim at the sea. High standard service, had even an ipod dock. Zen atmosphere. A summer to remember!

      Definitely worth our money!

Left on 01/12/2011 for a stay in August 2010

We loved everything about it, the location, the layout and most of all, the courtyard with the private pool. Definitely worth our money.
Our only remark was the rather small door which leads to the kitchen: If you do not pay attention you could smack your head! Fortunately, we were informed about it by the concierge, who explained that during the renovation they had to respect the original layout of this very old mansion, so they left the doors unchanged.
We would love to go back someday..

Last year my husband arranged for a surprise romantic trip to Santorini and selected Mansion Sophia after searching the internet. I have to say that I was stunned when I entered this villa! The architecture of the building and the beautiful courtyard with the garden and the pool was so romantic, perfect for our occasion! Sensational villa!

Left on 12/19/2010 for a stay in October 2009

For our 10years wedding anniversary we decided to visit Santorini and rent a villa in order to celebrate properly with my wife. We googled Mansion Sophia and after reading possitive feedback we dediced to book it.I must say, this villa lived up to the hype! Really romantic, with great architecture and a lovely pool. The service was excellent and the location was very convenient in the middle of the island (10-15 minutes away from all the best the island has to offer. I must mention that this was our first time in a villa (we hesitated in the past and selected 4-5 star hotels) but we had such good experience that we will be prefering villas like this in the future, as they offer privacy and peace of mind..

A place full of history and culture..

Left on 12/17/2010 for a stay in May 2009

My wife and I, decided to have a mini break on May 2009, so Santorini was
our obvious choice, since we are Greeks and this is our favorite island!
A friend of ours recommended to stay in a villa for once and avoid the hotels in Caldera with the
magnificent view but total lack of privacy..
I must say, we are so glad that we followed our friend's advice, as we had a
terrific time! First of all, the villa we chose (Mansion Sophia) was
astonishing! It had a really big and very private courtyard with a beautiful
garden and a Moroccan-Style pool where we spend most of our time
lounging in the hammock or the pool beds.. There was also another,
smaller courtyard with flower beds and a big dining table which has lovely
      view of the village (Megalohori).
The interiors of the house were also breathtaking and spacious: The master
bedroom had a really big and romantic four-poster bed. Being an architect,
I was impressed by the ceilings which were traditional, high vaulted and by
the authentic polished wooden floors of the salon. The manager of the
company told us that this house was built on the 19th Century and
belonged to a wealthy merchants' family who exported Santorinian wine.
That explained the beauty and layout of this house, which also featured a
canava area for the production of the wine.
We cannot recommend enough Mansion Sophia, as it offers
not just accommodation, but the privilege to stay in a place full of history
      and culture!

      Loved it!

Left on 12/17/2010 for a stay in May 2009

That was a great villa, we absolutely loved it.
It combined very well the traditional Greek style with modern amenities.
The pool area was stunning but maybe our favorite place was the small garden in which you entered through the kitchen door, where we used to eat having views of the village with its lovely church domes and bells..
We miss the place so much!
