I have just spend a month at Hans Place and it was the most relaxing and peaceful place that I have ever stayed in. The bungalow was well fitted out, clean and cosy. Hans was the perfect host welcoming me and then making sure I had everything I needed. Sarah came and cleaned several times a week and brought me fresh avocados from the trees growing on the property - always with a lovely bright smile and always willing to lend a helping hand. Hans place is around 3 klms out of town. You can walk if you are feeling fit, or there are buses several times a day leaving from the end of the road. If you are looking for a place to just chill out for a while, then this is perfect!

We stayed here in april after contacting Hans, the owner. He was so helpful as we planned our trip, and made us feel we had made a friend even before we arrived. We were delighted with our accomodation. It was all we had hoped for. Well equipped, clean, peaceful and set in beautiful gardens, just a 2 miles out of Savusavu. Hans son Jonathon was on hand if we needed anything and Sera made sure we had everything we needed on her daily visits. She was a mine of information, telling us about the local area and customs and recommending places to visit. She sometimes accompanied us into town and cooked us a traditional Fijian meal one evening, helped by her daughter. She brought us fresh fruit and coconuts from the stunning garden and washed our clothes. She was a real treasure and we loved her company. She also showed us a great place for snorkelling nearby. We spent a lot of our time exploring the island by bus, which was cheap and great fun. We met lots of interesting and friendly local people and saw a great deal of this beautiful island. There is a bus into Savusavu 3 times a day ,just at the end of the road and lots of taxis. We didn't do a lot of our own cooking as we found eating out wasn't expensive and often shops sold provisions in bulk which was difficult to store. The Copra Shed in Savusavu is a lovely place to sit and watch the world go by and the food was good and not expensive. We often walked down to the end of the road in the evening to sit at the bus stop and watch the world go by. We met so many lovely people that way and were even lucky enough to be invited into their homes.
We had a fabulous two weeks stay here and would thoroughly recommend it to anyone looking for a peaceful.,relaxing holiday in beautiful surroundings. Excellent value for money, homely accomodation and an extremely helpful owner who went out of his way to make sure we were well looked after even before we arrived!
We often took the bus into savusavu -

Hans' Place s truly a hidden gem. From the delightful cottages and lush rambling gardens; to the picturesque scenery around Savusavu and the people in town, you are in holiday heaven!
Hans' cottages are approx. 3 kms from town so a $FJ6 taxi fare each way is a necessity - or there's a bus at the end of the driveway about every hour, or a very pretty walk beside the water.
You will need to take everything in the way of provisions with you - yes even dish liquid and toilet paper! It's a good idea to stop at a supermarket and grab supplies on your way from the airport or Ferry terminal.
We stayed in House Yaka and it was so cosy and clean. Sera will come and clean and change linen every other day if you wish - we were treated to fresh exotic flowers both inside and out - all part of the care to help you feel at home.
The kitchen is adequately equipped for self-cooking, but be warned that you will need to keep almost everything in the fridge due to tiny invasive ants that help themselves night and day! In the cooler months they may not be an issue but in February they were active!
Savusavu is small and friendly with everything you could want for a relaxed break or an adventurous one.
The Copra Shed /Yacht Club has nice eateries and information desk and scooter hire; the Decked Out cafe serves great food with a great view; at Budget you can hire a car (4WD recommended!); buy fresh produce at the market and other goods at the supermarket. There's almost more taxi's than people (!!) but they are cheap and worth jumping into for brief trips. Take a bus to Labasa - about 3 hours, or 1.5 by car.
I'm sure if you needed local advice Jonathan (Hans' son) would be only too happy to help you.
We loved our stay at Hans' tropical hideaway. It's perfect for cosy couples, honeymooners, solo travellers - it's homely comfort on a budget.

When we started out, we thought 4 months would be a long time but now, 4 months later, we are not ready to leave. Hans' Place turned out to be the perfect place to stay during our Fiji visit. We came here to relax, rejuvenate and explore. Yaka House is quiet and peaceful - we spent many hours on the veranda reading and enjoying the beautiful landscaping. We appreciated reading the books Hans provided about Fiji's history. It is a pleasant walk to the seaside and on the road along the bay.
We enjoyed visiting with the locals at the bus stop and on the beach. The bus/taxi rides to and from town are reasonably priced and provide an enjoyable experience. Hans is very organized and helpful so transportation was always easy to obtain.
Hans is knowledgeable about Fiji and was able to give us good advice about shopping and exploring other areas. We enjoyed many conversations on the veranda and sharing meals in town. Hans' cheerfulness and laugh were always a bright spot in our days.
Jonathan, Hans' son, is a very polite and gracious young man whom we enjoyed. Serah took good care of our laundry and kept the cottage clean. She always checked to see if we needed more fresh coconut.
Hans also provided fresh fruit, papayas, bananas and passion fruit, that was delicious. We really appreciate the fact that everyone, especially Hans, made a point of making sure we had what we needed and were comfortable and happy.
