My wife and I have traveled all over the world and love homey, funky places to stay.
Casa Mar del Sur is a wonderful place to relax and unwind in Sayulita.
We took two 5 year olds and four adults for a week of sun vacation at MdS and just loved it.
Before we went, Ellen spent hours answering any and all questions we could ask via email promptly. (Thanks Ellen for answering some pretty inane questions!)
We were greeted by a temp manager who was filling in while the FT manager was out of town. She was exceptionally helpful in showing us where/what/when/how. We had some issues with WIFI and she resolved very quickly and was always available to answer more questions.
The decor has been chosen with care and the layout of the home is wonderful. Cookie cutter condo this is NOT. Frida K follows you in nearly every room including the bathrooms.
You can see for yourself in the photos how special the place is. Everything was well put together and well thought out. Lots of sheets, towels, blankets, glasses, bottle openers... This place is well stocked. When I mentioned some suggestions of items to replace, Ellen hopped right on it. Modern dishwasher and fridge were helpful.
We will go back again, but NOT in July. Just too darned hot. (Ellen had warned us that July could be hot and they don't usually rent out in July, but...) Having said that, the pool is small but perfect to cool off in and for the kids to do "laps". Lots of lounge chairs to relax in or dry off your wet suits and towels.
The location is just minutes from downtown. 5 minutes for adults, 10 for kids. It was too hot for us to walk with kids so we rented a golf cart from Gaston in town. you can reach him at firstname.lastname@example.org. His location is a bit off the beaten path, but he's mellow and responsive and the golf carts were great. Oh, I found out after the fact that he will come to your casa and fill out all the paperwork on site.
So in terms of location, you're on the edge of town, but 1.5 min walk from the beach (I timed it). The beach this time of year is not ideal for swimming. You can walk to a bodega in about 4 minutes for ice, beer, ice cream, milk... We prefer being on the edge of town, just quieter.
One small note about location, the house is on the corner of a pretty active road. The first morning at 6am a garbage truck hit the speed bump at the corner going about 40 MPH and we levitated out of bed from the sound. You'll hear cars, trucks, mopeds, motorcycles going by on the road 24/7. So, it's not the quietest of locations, but far quieter than if you were in the center. If you want absolute quiet, you could rent on top of one of the hills, but we liked the balance that the house delivered.
Oh and the rooftop deck: despite the very steep stairs to get up there, we loved it. Cooler, open and with a tree obscured view to the water. (Note, I'm certain that during other times of the year the view is not obscured, but this seemed like the growing season).
In the end, the house is just lovely. It's three+ stories, so plan on walking up and down a lot. But if you want a comfy, slightly funkily decored place that is large, convenient and well-thought out in a world where there is lots of cookie cutter, then Casa Mar del Sur would be ideal for you. Thank you again Paul for your thorough analysis! It has been a hot summer in Sayulita, we are headed there next week.......bikini time.
Stunning casa in a fantastic location - what a treat!

We stayed in La Luna while our friends (another 2 families) stayed in Casa del Mar (attached). Both casas were absolutely gorgeous. It felt like we were staying in work of art, not a house. Great care and attention has been given to the smallest details. The staff was friendly and professional. They will even do your laundry for a small fee. (They cooked for us one night - wow!) The casa is very clean and taken care of like you'd expect a home to be taken care of - it's loved by everyone that stays there, you can just tell. Check in was efficient and friendly. Sheryl, the property manager, was fantastic. She was easy to get a hold of when we thought we lost our keys (we hadn't) and was super helpful when it came to recommending restaurants, stores, etc. The location is great - a short walk to the beach (about 1/2 a city block) with only a slight grade. Our 2, 3 and 5 year olds had no problem making the trek, even right before nap time. Speaking of the beach, the casa has a collection of chairs, umbrellas and beach toys, which we appreciated. The kitchen was fully appointed and beautiful. Modern appliances. The water is filtered (there are two types of filtered water on tap) and we had no issues with drinking it. We had beautiful weather, but the casa had Dvds, board games, etc. should you need it. Air conditioning was a bonus. We only used it in our rooms for a little while each night, as the house tends to keep relatively cool, but it was appreciated. The bathrooms/showers were clean and very funky - just like the rest of the house. We felt safe and secure. The outer doors to the entry area (2) are always locked and give you peace of mind (not that we were worried so much as it's a safe neighbourhood/town). The bedrooms are large - lots of room for all your gear. Landscaping is beautiful. Short walk to main plaza and fun eateries. I can't say enough good things about this casa, and I now have three to compare it to in Sayulita. We can't wait to come back!

We enjoyed 8 blissful nights on a family get together. The house was more beautiful than the photos! Every little detail is taken care of and our stay was wonderful.
We extend our sincere thanks to Sheryl (manager) for her warmth and help. Vicki, Bernadino and family (housekeeping team) were fabulous and somehow managed to unobtrusively make beds, clean up kitchen, tend pool and garden without us even knowing!
Above all Ellen, thank you for allowing us to stay in your exquisite home.
Thank you Jonas, we will look forward to your return!

We are a group of 6 30-40-year-old architects that came to Sayulita for a 5-night stay near the beach before heading to San Miguel de allende for a wedding. Casa Mar del Sur was perfect for us, and we were completely enchanted from the time we arrived until we left. The house and grounds are immaculate and very well decorated with lots of curiosities particular to Mexico. Each of the three bedrooms has its own charm, and there are multiple hang out areas so you can easily spend your time together or find a spot for some alone time. The house is secure, so we could head to the beach or on a day trip without worrying about anything getting stolen. If we had questions about anything, the owner and housekeeper responded quickly to an email or phone call, and somehow the house was tidied up and beds were made without us even noticing any staff. We walked quite a bit of the town and areas with houses up on the hill, and felt happy that we didn't see anywhere else we would rather have stayed. The location, comfort, and delightfulness would be difficult to top. Read more
Hello Andrea and other 30 Somethings! Thank you so much for choosing Mar del Sur, we really love it when our guests appreciate the ambience and extras we strive to provide and enjoy the casa and Sayulita as we do. Ellen

We so enjoyed our stay at Casa Mar del Sur!! Just meters from the beach while staying in a beautiful home that offers so much...wifi, swimming pools, well appointed kitchen, air conditioned bedroom with gorgeous fans. There is a real attention to detail and comfort here. The beach was spectacular! There are so many little private areas to go to meditate or just relax on this beach. There is also a forested/jungle area to walk or jog through no more than a block away. I especially enjoyed the roof top terrace.
A peaceful sanctuary in a lovely little town

I stayed with my family for 8 days in Ellen's home and it was everything I hoped for and more. The home is beautiful and the care that has been taken in decorating, and equipping the home to satisfy your ever need was outstanding.
The courtyard with pool and gardens provided a private, safe, and beautiful place to unwind and relax at the end of each day spent wandering around the village or relaxing on the beach.
The beds were extremely comfortable and and the bathrooms well appointed. The house is laid out in such a way to provide for lots of communal space to 'be together' with quiet nooks and a rooftop terrace to allow for privacy and 'away' time.
Located just a few feet from the beach and close to the centre of town, the home was just enough off the beaten path to provide privacy, without isolating you from the main activities that Sayulita offers.
In all of our dealings with Ellen and her staff on site in Sayulita we were well cared for. All of our questions were answered, and our needs were accommodated. We were given recommendations for activities and referrals for restaurants and services.
Although I would love to have this place all to myself, it's important that you know that if you are considering Casa Mar Del Sur for your Sayulita vacation, you will not be disappointed!
Wonderful Home, Great Location

This home is fantastic! We spent 6 days in Jan 2013 at the home and had a wonderful time. The owner contacted us with a very detailed arrival package and questions regarding how we wanted the house set up and if we required any other services (recommendations for vendors definitely came in handy). Once in the home, I could tell that a lot of time and thought went in to all of the decorations, plantings, and small touches that made the house an inviting home away from home. The staff that helped clean and care for the property were very polite and easy to communicate with regardless of any language barriers.
The amenities in the home were also excellent. The purified water system was great to have. The inflatable beds were great for the kids, too. It was great to not have to worry about some basic supplies that were already in the cabinet & baths, and the ample supply of dishes / glasses / pans in the huge kitchen was great.
The home is an easy 8-10 minute leisurely walk from the downtown plaza with no hills to climb (but you must cross the river), and even at night we always felt safe in the neighborhood. We did rent a golf cart for part of our stay, and the casa has a gated area for vehicle parking.
If I have the opportunity in the future, I would definitely stay here again. Thank you for helping to make our family vacation a comfortable & memorable experience. Read more
Thank you very much Austin! Hope you enjoyed the "River" crossing - all 2" of FUN but remember the other more direct ways into the village!!

Fun and funky house with great pool and close to beach (dont have to climb steep hills, which is good in Sayulita because some houses may seem only a few blocks from beach, but they require climbing steep hills to get home). House is in a more sedate part of town, which is also good. Great place.
We'll be back!!!

Casa Mar Del Sur was exactly what we were looking for, clean, well equipped, close to the beach. A true Mexican hacienda built with old world charm and all the modern conveniences. Sheryl the local manager did everything she could to insure all our needs were met and the owners made us feel they were available if we needed them. The things we all loved were we felt extremely safe, had lot's of space, the privacy, the crows-nest, the pool, decoration, the beds and all the staff! There is no question we will return again one day. Thanks for sharing your home! Read more
Hello Canadian friends! So very happy you enjoyed Mar del Sur & Sayulita. Sheryl and our staff are very special to us and we are pleased that you agree - hope you return for another special anniversary! Ellen

We returned for our third stay at Casa Mar del Sur the week of Feb.4th. We love staying in this beautiful & comfortable home so much that if it is not available for our requested datets (as was the case on this trip) we change our trip dates to when we can get in. We now consider the house to be "ours." Tho we visited this time as a couple we have enjoyed the spacious & wonderfully equipped home w/another couple & spent one Thanksgiving holiday here w/family. We love cooking fresh seafood dinners (usually bought of a truck that comes down the street in the mornings) in the spacious kitchen that looks out over the gorgeous pool & which is open to the dining & living area allowing for all guest who choose to be in on the fun. The house is a one minute stroll away from the beach which we usually visit multiple times a day. The ocean is visible from 2nd story windows as well as a panoramic view from the rooftop terrace which is perfect for watching sunsets & star gazing. The beautiful pool is well equipped w/furniture & towels. As landscapers ourselves we particularly enjoy the amazing variety of palms, cacti & succulents in the beautiful gardens that surround the pool area. As for Sayulita & life away from the house: wonderful bars and restaurants, varying widely in offerings & price range (tho all casual) line the beach between the house & downtown which is a five minute walk on the sand. We live in Mexico & frequent most of it's beaches. One thing nice about Sayulita is there tends to be visitors from around the world as well as a surf culture & surfers depending on the time of the year. Worth mentioning also are some amazing hikes thru the forest that lead to extremely remote beaches where we have often found ourselves to be the only people. We found these hikes w/maps in the book provided by the owners of the house featuring "things to do." Clearly we highly recommend Casa Mar del Sur to anyone planning to visit Sayulita. Read more
Nick, many thanks - we ALWAYS look forward to your stays.....ever since that first Thanksgiving!! they are always notable and memorable!

Simply Fantastic House and Great Location

I have had the good fortune to stay at this property 6 or 8 times in the last five years or so and I have been going to sayulita for close to 10 years.
Quite simply, I think this is one of the best properties in the town for many reasons. The property itself is fabulous. The pool, the inside grounds, the roof deck/palapa are all amazing. The hammocks on the roof deck/palapa are the best and I would read up there every morning for hours. The attention to detail such as lamps, lights, decorations, etc is fantastic. The bedrooms are good size, the a/C works great and the beach towels/chairs/other amenities are really nice to have.
In addition, I think they have just about a perfect location. The house is very close to the beach, a very short walk from town, not up a large hill like many of the other nice properties in town but yet it is removed enough to be more quiet, less touristy and just all around more pleasant. Personally, I do not like to stay down by the square or on gringo hill, but I like to be close enough to hop down there in a few minutes. I have also had friends stay up the hill from this property, and while the views are nice up there, the properties are much less accessible and my friend was not that thrilled with his choice.
In any case, from my personal experience I think staying at this property is an absolute pleasure and I cannot recommend it more highly. I also cannot wait to get back there as soon as I can manage it.
Hi Sean, Thank you so very muuch and hope you are able to return quickly! Ellen

Casa Mar Del Sur is amazing. We stay here every year. The house is absolutely gorgeous and has a real mexican feel to it. It has all the comforts of home, including a water filtration system. The bedrooms are all comfortable (I have stayed in all of them!). The house has a very open feeling and invites the inside out. The grounds are very private and gorgeous, boasting lush plants and vegetation and a pool. There are many hammocks and ultra comfortable places to relax. The roof-top palapa is stunning and one of my personal favorite spots to take in the beauty and hear the ocean waves breaking. The beach is a short walk across the local street and down a path. Because the house is located in the north end of town, the beach is less crowded and more desirable, in my opinion. It is a short and easy walk to the beach Casa Mar Del Sur is also a perfect distance from town, being a very walkable flat distance, but also far enough away to be out of the hustle. The service was excellent. Overall, I would highly recommend this vacation rental. Read more
