Description

Talahogan is a Navajo word for "house on hill." For the Navajo, the hogan is a sacred dwelling--a protection and refuge grounded on a harmony with life and nature. Such is the spirit of Talahogan, a country home located on 2.5 acres on a quiet hilltop miles away from commercial and tourist centers of Sedona. The property straddles a steep, narrow hill on the edge of the Coconino National Forest from which there are sweeping panoramas in every direction. Originally a hunting cabin built 100 years ago, the dwelling has been renovated and expanded over the years in a restless effort to make the "house" worthy of the "hill"-- an abode designed, constructed, furnished and landscaped to be in harmony with the magnificent surrounding natural creation. Among other things, this means a reduced carbon footprint, solar power, water conservation, and a welcoming habitat for wildlife and pollinators. Above all, it means a house that truly feels like home and provides a harmonious setting in which to experience fully the grandeur and peace of Sedona.

Getting around

From the property, you will need a car for errands at local markets/stores and for visiting Uptown Sedona or going further afield. There is no real public transportation. If interested in a general orientation to the community and Red Rock Country, there are various commercial options like the Sedona Trolley and Pink Jeep Tours. The city has recently initiated the Sedona Shuttle that provides free transportation from 3 Park and Rides to several popular trailheads.

Interaction with guest

I encourage and enjoy close interaction to get to know guests better, orient them to the house/property, respond to specific questions, and, depending on interests, recommend the wide spectrum of things to see and do in Sedona, the Verde Valley and the larger Grand Canyon region--hiking/biking trails, restaurants, cultural/wine/crafts beer scenes, Native American heritage sites, special activities, tours and features, etc. Most guests are repeat renters whom I have gotten to know well over the years. Depending on my schedule, I may or may not be at the house to greet you personally but will be very responsive via email/text in advance of and throughout your stay.
