The oldest of the fortified hill-villages of the upper Var, Seillans is a harmonious ensemble of pinkish-ochre houses looking ever fertile fields from wooded heights. Situated in an area full of Neolithic and Celto-Ligurian vestiges, Seillans was occupied from the second century B.C. by the Romans, who created a large settlement in the fields below the Village. Repeatedly sacked during the Dark Ages, the village was reputedly named "Seillans" after the Provencal word for the pot used for boiling the oil with which the inhabitants vainly tried to repel the invaders. The Village's subsequent history was rather more peaceful and marked principally by disputes over the ownership of its seigniorial rights.By the late nineteenth century, when Seillans had become a quiet backwater, the Vicomtesse Savigny de Moncorps decided to provide new employment for the inhabitants by expanding the local horticulture industry and founding a perfume factory. At the same time, the village began to attract a number of distinguished people from the world of the arts, including the composer Gounod and the writers Jean Aicard and Alphonse Kerr. The Surrealist artist Max Ernst moved there in 1962 and remained until his death in 1976.
