St Johns Basilica
The church of St John is set below the hilltop citadel in the center of Selcuk. After the death of Christ, St. John came with Mary to Ephesus living most of his life in and around the Ayasoluk Hill and spreading the word of Christianity as St Paul did before him. A 4th century tomb was believed to house his remains, so in the 6th century Emperor Justinian (527-65) erected a magnificent church on top of the tomb.
Isabey Mosque
The Isabey mosque situated just down the hill from the St Johns Church at the foot of the Ayasuluk Hill the huge Isabey Mosque built in 1375 by the Emir of Aydin in a post- Seljuk / pre-Ottoman transitional style is well worth visiting
Temple of Artemis
The Temple of Artemis is situated just 5 minutes walk from the center of Selcuk towards Ephesus, it used to earn sizeable sums of money from the pilgrims paying homage to the ancient fertility goddess Cybele/Artemis. In its prime it was larger than the Parthenon at Athens with 127 columns, all with figures carved around the base. Once one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and today with little left to see but it is a beautiful setting with wonderful views to the Isabey mosque and St Johns Basilica.
Ephesus museum in the center of Selcuk houses a striking collection of artifacts from Ephesus and the surrounding archaeological sites, a small but fantastic museum.

Tucson, ArizonaPerfect place to stay in Selcuk
Left on 05/13/2013 for a stay in April 2013
This house was absolutely perfect. There were 4 of us in the 2 "houses" and it would have been easy and comfortable to add 2 or 4 more. Beautiful with wonderful terraces to enjoy the views of the whole town. Walking distance to the friendly little town. Wonderful restaurants. Alison found a perfect guide for us to enjoy 3 days of exploring the archeological sites. The only problem is I would have enjoyed a day or two more to just enjoy the house. If at all possible arrive so you can go to the Sat. market to stock up the kitchen at least for breakfasts and maybe a BBQ or two.

We had two families with 2 kids each (ages 8 to 16)...the house was perfect to give us all a bit of room and the sitting room in the upstairs bedroom made a good "internet cafe" for the kids due to best wifi. Location can't be beat: great views and easy walk to town, with a market steps away for buying breakfast bread etc. And after a cold day in winter walking around Ephesus or town, the sauna is the perfect thing for warming up. House is absolutely beautiful and spotlessly clean with everything we needed, and alison was great to work with.

The perfect house in a lovely town. We had 5 wonderful days here visiting Ephesus and exploring the area. Stone House has a fantastic pool and 2 great terraces to enjoy the view from. All bedrooms are very comfortable and the kitchen has everything you need. We had several very enjoyable Bbqs on the top terrace. There is parking right out front. Allison met us at the local petrol station and guided us to the house and was on hand for any assistance needed. This was a lovely break on our 4 week driving tour through Turkey.

This was our best accommodation in Turkey. The house is located in the Kurdish area of Selcuk toward the top of a hill. Getting around is very easy. One can access the town center on foot in five minutes. The house is beatifully designed with two separate living areas accessed by external stairs. The pool is small but great after a hot day. There is also a very nice outdoor eating area on the roof with wonderful views. Selcuk is a couple of kilometres from Ephesus and within a short drive of many other interesting archeological sites.

Left on 08/06/2012 for a stay in July 2012
We stayed with our two teenage girls at the Stone House for a couple of weeks in July and enjoyed every minute of it. The other reviews are very accurate. We would just add that the house is beautifully appointed and spacious with lots of outdoor areas for enjoying the different times of day: whether watching the morning sun creeping over the minarets & roof tops towards this lovely hillside house, or enjoying the fantastic panoramic view of the neighbouring hill top Byzantine fortress & Basilica, or enjoying the sunset behind a coastal promontory from the dining area on the roof terrace. Selcuk is a charming town untainted by mass tourism. You are more likely to see the locals parking their tractors outside their houses than Bmws. There is more to Selcuk than just the fascinating sights of Ephesus. The Museum is excellent, the Basilica and Temple of artemis fascinating, the restaurants very good and the Saturday market a great source of local produce. There is also a lot more to the nearby coast than just the lengthy sands of Pamacuk Beach. Alison, who couldn’t have been more helpful, arranged a hire car for us with a driver to collect us from and return us to Izmir airport. Driving is no hassle in this part of Turkey. Having a car gave us the freedom to get to the less well known but truly beautiful and interesting sites such as aphrodisias, Claros and Priene and the great fish restaurant at Karine recommended by alison. Herakelia on Lake Bafa also makes a lovely day out. Fully recommended.

Stone House made our stay in Selcuk extra special. The house itself is gorgeous, with lovely furnishings and so many outdoor areas to enjoy in privacy. Even though it was very hot during the day, it was cool enough at night and the rooms ventilated well enough that we didn't even need the air conditioning. And of course it was wonderful having the pool to cool off in after a day exploring the area. A large jug of drinking water and various kitchen basics were provided, as well as bath and swim towels. The internet worked well (though only in the upper bedrooms and on the patio). Alison was incredibly helpful with suggestions and arranging a car service when we needed it. The house is just a short walk from the middle of town with its shops and restaurants and the bus station. Highly recommended!

We had a great week in the house. Very comfortable everything you need. Alison is very helpful. She picked us up from the train station and drove us to the house. She recommended good restaurants, and activities. The pool was a godsend in the heat. We visited aLL the ruins and would come back to the house to recover. Selcuk is a lovely town and the house has an amazing view. It's 10 minute walk up from the town centre in a real neighbourhood, full of children.

We stayed at Stone House for four nights. We have three kids age 14, 12, and 7. The house is a lovely, multi-level, traditionally built and decorated home. The master suite is wonderful. There's a full kitchen, but we chose to eat lunch and dinner in town. The town is less than a 10-minute walk and is filled with nice shops and simple, good restaurants. We also arrived with the storks who had built nests on the top of each pillar of the Roman aqueduct. The kids loved it.

Stone House is a beautiful place with great amenities - a sauna for warm, intimate together time after the day's adventures, outdoor fireplace and brick oven for delicious pizzas, fish, etc. and a large dining room table to gather around for family meals and games. The friendly corner grocer a few steps away offers crusty fresh bread daily. A short walk gets you into the centre of a pleasant Turkish village. A slightly longer walk takes you to one of Turkey's most amazing ancient sites, Ephesus. Stone House was a perfect location for our family Christmas week in Turkey.

We stayed here for a week recently, and loved it thoroughly. The work done to construct this little jewel is amazing (the photo book in the kitchen tells the story) - the architect should be commended (and he makes pretty good wine too!) and obviously a labour of love by the owners. The real thing is even better than the photos on the website.
Alison was great to deal with from afar prior to our arrival, and offered assistance (with rental vehicle & supplies). Only snag was the deposit, where both our bank and hers took a huge profit from the money wire transfer (not her fault). She waited for us on the day we arrived and personally escorted us through the streets to the house. Once settled, we had no problems that weren't readily dealt with by her.
Town was just a short walk down the hill (10 mins) and over the tracks, where we found lots of restaurants/cafes to keep us happy. We also visited the big market day, buying lots of provisions for our evening 'mezes', which we enjoyed on the roof top terrace, watching the sun set...and the magic continued with the bats whizzing about catching their evening mezes (bugs) too !
The beach (Pamacuk), Sirince (little old Greek enclave in the mountains) and the ancient city of Ephesus was only a short car ride away, and for those who want it - the overcrowded town of Kusadasi isn't far away either. Selcuk is a perfect spot to explore everything in the area.
Stone House is spectacular, and definitely the highlight of our 3 weeks in Turkey. We have nothing but fond memories and appreciated alison sharing this lovely home with us.Response from Alison Morel - 10/08/2011

Thank you so much for taking the trouble to write your review in such detail, nice for others who may be thinking of enjoying Stone House as well.
As Joanne stated bank transfers are not the best option, credit card deposit payment has proved to be the easiest and incuring no charges, the best option.
Best wishes to the both of you,

We stayed here for one week and were delighted with our stay. The house is absolutely beautiful and had everything we needed, and the pool is perfect for cooling down. We all loved hearing the Call to Prayer.
The view over Selcuk is absolutely amazing and yet the centre of town is just a short walk away down the hill, alongside the aquaduct.. The nearest shops (for bread/butter/ice lollies/milk/jam...) are just along the road.
We loved Selcuk itself and found plenty to do, but alison (ever helpful and available) had many more suggestions that we could have taken up had we wished. Ephesus exceeded our expectations!
For us Stonehouse was perfect and we recommend it very highly.Response from Alison Morel - 08/18/2011

We stayed here for 2 weeks.
The house is beautifully finished! I loved dinner on the roof terrace at sunset with the stunning views of the town. Lazing by the pool in the shade with a cool beer and a good book followed by a refreshing dip in the pool was pure relaxation. The town is only a short walk away - we bought delicious local produce there to grill on the barBQ at our leisure.
I loved walking up to the hilltop nearby, through what felt like a village with the locals wondering why I was venturing out in the afternoon heat. -

We stayed at this property last year for two weeks. Alison was amazing and there was nothing she wouldn't do for us, which made our stay so much more enjoyable. Her local knowledge saved us so much time and gave us more time to thoroughly enjoy our stay. The house was amazing. Nestled in the hills of old town Selcuk. The local neighbours were really friendly. The facilities were more than we expected. The swimming pool and the sauna were great and the roof top was breathtaking overlooking the whole town and our favourite spot at night. The rooms were spotless and quite at night. The kitchen was well equiped with all the nesessary appliances you required. We really enjoyed the whole stay and I/We find it extremly difficult to point anything negative about this property. What we liked the least was that we had to leave this little haven. But we will be back.

Renting Stone house for our holidays was the best idea. Its the most comfortable and luxurious place we could find to relax and spent a wonderful time. The interior of the houses is kept in a modern but oriental style, the terrace garden with an outside oven and barbeque place are wonderful for nice evening dinners and the view from the terraces where we did enjoy the most amazing sundowns, was our favorite place to rest after exiting days filled with trips to the sites which are in this area. Shame we could not use the little pool too much because of weather reasons, but jumping into the water after having a sauna go, was fun.
The renting out person Alison gave us lots of tips for what we could visit in and around Selcuk, she helped us with airport transfers and renting out a car for a week.
This all made our holidays to one of the greatest times which we will defenately always remember thinking about our trip to Turkey, and I can highly recommend this place. We might even come back one day!!!
