Description from the owner
La Scierie is a renovated water-powered saw mill on the banks of the River Arget in. La Scierie makes an excellent base for exploring the regions' historical Cathar sites, and a perfect choice for outdoor activities in summer and winter. Additional Location Information
A 200m long trout filled mill stream flows under the main house and through the gardens where it is dammed to form a natural fresh water plunge pool prior to re-joining the main river. For guests wanting to swim rather than 'plunge' there is a quiet community pool only 30m from our front entrance, open during July and August.
Our free ranging chickens, and Donald and Daisy Duck add to the charm, and their antics can keep you amused for hours!
A converted barn within the grounds is set up as a games room for use by guests. The adjoining terrace with garden and river views makes a lovely place to enjoy an evening drink.
It is possible to enjoy a day trip to the coast from Le Scierie, with the Mediterranean towns of Narbonne and Perpignan two hours east and Biarritz and Bayonne on the Atlantic a three hours drive due west.
The Ariegé region offers a huge variety of ancient ruins and caves. Within a short car trip from our accommodation one can visit a large number of Cathar ruins, which are open all year round. Several prehistoric caves with cave paintings are also within similar distance. The underground river at Labouiche is a mere 8 km from Foix. Quiet mountain passes accessible through picturesque winding roads with splendid views of the Pyrenean peaks are plentiful. A one-hour drive to the east the fortress at Carcassonne the worlds largest preserved 11th century town provides an excellent day trip. The southern French city of Toulouse is a one-hour drive to the north and is always worth a visit. For duty free shopping Andorra is approximately an hour's drive to the south, and Lourdes is less than two hours drive to the west.
The Mill owner is a qualified sports massage therapist and operates a therapy room from the main house. Guests can benefit from an essential oil massage to help them relax into the holiday spirit, or a more intense sports massage to relieve any aching muscles following a day of outdoor activity. Nature lovers will find an abundance of wildlife to view in and around the La Scierie gardens, examples spotted include; Butterflies - Silver Washed Frittilary, Queen of Spain Frittilary, Southern White Admiral, Red Admiral, Comma, and Great Banded Grayling; Birds - Great Spotted Woodpecker, Green Woodpecker, Spotted Flycatcher, Tree Creeper, Nuthatch, Yellow Wagtail, Merlin, Kingfisher.

We stayed at the Mill out of season for a few nights in January as we were touring France and wanted to stay in the Pyrenees. The Mill Gite is on the top floor of the main house with its own entrance and decking, kitchen and bathroom. The owners were very friendly and certainly had a fair amount of information for visitors to the area.
The local main town, Foix, is about 15mins drive away and has a number of boutique shops as well as the main supermarkets. Foix is well placed to drive up the mountain passes to andorra (snow chains needed in winter) or across to the beaches on the Med.
We found the Gite to be quite cold during the winter months as the wood burner in the kitchen didn't reach to the bedroom. There is a small electric heater that is provided but we found it was only good enough to take the chill out of the room. The wood burner takes a bit of expertise to maintain as the wood was a bit damp but once going was toasty and there is a good hot shower. (May also be worth bringing a torch as the path up to the gite from the drive way is pitch black and the steps were slippy in the wet)
If you feel the cold then the Mill is best visited in the warmer months of the year. The area is fantastic with many hiking and biking routes all within a short drive.Response from Jennifer Hatchard - 02/06/2013

I am really sorry to hear that you were cold here - that is no-one's idea of a good holiday. If you had let us know we could have provided extra heaters, and even different wood.
In response to your comments we will be adding a tourch in the gite immediatley, and offering a fire lighting service, so that clients return to a lit fire, and therefore warm gite at the end of a day out. -

Pictures really do not do this beautiful place justice at all, be prepared to be received by a wonderfully welcoming family, into their gorgeous property, surrounded by a stunning landscape, which has the right mix of privacy and comfortable very "french" accomodation, with their excellent local knowledge your assured to have the break we all deserve!

Beautiful well equipped gite ideal for two people in the beautiful surroundings of the ariege. Friendly and helpful hosts who take a pride in their accommodation. Visit the town of Foix with it's impressive castle looking down over the region. There are many events on during the year and lots of places to visit within a 20 mile radius. If you don't want to wander too far, this gite is a delightful place to just sit and soak up the surroundings. We had a wondeful week here and would highly recommend it.

We stayed here recently and spent a fantastic week exploring the local area. La Scierie is really well situated for visiting all sorts of local attractions and every direction you drive you are surrounded by beautiful scenery. The Mill gite itself was everything we expected and wanted. It was well equipped, clean and cosy. The bed was really comfortable and the shower good and hot, simple but important factors! There is a small private balcony with a BBQ outside the gite where you can enjoy a glass or two of the local wine (you can even buy some next door!) Jenny and Tony also allow their guests access to their large and stunning garden which is hugged on one side by the river. I would highly recommend this gite and the area in general.

We've stayed at La Scierie many times over the last 5 years and go back time and again for the beautiful scenery, great location (lots of runs and bike routes on the doorstep) and the warm welcome from Jenny, Tony and their two little girls.
Last year was our first stay in the Mill Gite and we absolutely loved it! It's the perfect romantic hideaway, with a private patio looking out directly onto the beautiful grounds.
Another great plus for a 'sports nut' like me were Jenny's circuit classes (she knows what she's doing when it comes to getting the most out of a training session) and - the icing on the cake - a choice of massages to end the day in the dedicated room she has set up.
We'll be back this Summer for more!
