Great time, but lacks cleanliness, repair

Left on 01/18/2013 for a stay in December 2012

We brought our family to the cabin for a New Year's celebration and we had a great time. The layout was great for our family which includes children. However, we were very disappointed in the cleanliness and care--most dishes had to be washed before use, dirty towels hanging on the back of a bathroom door, cobwebs on the light fixture hanging over the table, pullout couch was broken, pool stick broken, roof leaked!! (Good thing we were leaving on the day that it rained--the carpet in the living room was soaked!) We have rented from Great Cabins many times, but are disappointed that they don't represent cabins with higher levels of care and cleanliness.

      Beautiful cabin

Left on 09/01/2010 for a stay in August 2010

Except for a few cobwebs, everything was very clean. It was a little warm in the wee hours of the morning, like maybe the therostat was shut off.

The only other thing wrong, was we did not have a mop. If we spilled anything, we had to clean up with paper towels or regular towels. Other than that, everything was wonderful.

      Mountain Adventure

Left on 11/11/2009 for a stay in October 2009

This cabin is definitely a cabin for those that are looking for an adventure, not a restful or quiet week. Our original reservation was for a different cabin that went into foreclosure and Great Cabins was kind enough to move us to this cabin that was big enough to accommodate our group. Our request was a great view with 6 rocking chairs. We got the great view and two rocking chairs and broken plastic outdoor furniture. We did read the reviews, but thought that the water leaks had to have been resolved by the time we arrived. Not, the leaks still existed from the upstairs bathroom into the bedroom below. We learned our lesson there, next year, we’ll be prepared. Our real adventures began the first night. We all sit in the living room just to wind down and leaks from the roof are falling on the coffee table. Just after bedtime, we receive our first visit from the raccoons. They really love the trash and this cabin does not have secure trash bins nor secure storage racks like you would expect for the area. Our second day, we clean the trash mess, wash off the feces from the deck and around the hot tub, just to have it all again the following day. After several failed attempts to keep the raccoons out of the trash, bungie cords, heavy boards, chains etc. they still returned every night except our last night. While we thought they were out there making the racket yet again, to our surprise it was a black bear this time. Be extremely careful if you take pets or children to this cabin! After this adventure we’ve learned that it’s important to pick a cabin without leaks, that has secure trash bins so that you don’t have to clean the trash messes, a cabin that you can actually use the hot tub without cleaning the raccoon feces before you can enjoy it.

The good thing about the cabin, it had a terrific view!!

The Runaway left us a little "wet" and "dry".

Left on 07/23/2009 for a stay in July 2009

Let me start by saying that the cabin itself is beautiful, in a beautiful location with a breathtaking view! It was the perfect setting for what should have been the perfect vacation. Upon our arrival we began unpacking our groceries and found that we would have to empty out the cabinets in order to stock them. The shelves and drawers were a mess....there were christmas decorations, easter baskets, mallard ducks....you name it, we moved it. We looked past this problem and proceeded with a great first night of fun. On July 4th we were enjoying the festivites with family and friends when the first sign of trouble began. The Black Bear bedroom had water all over the floor which we finally realized was leaking from the 3rd floor bathroom. Would have considered this an unfortunate happenstance if we had not read about it being a problem back in 2008 in another review! Later that day we lost water---guess the leak in the bedroom is a moot point. Well, beacause it was July 4th we were unable to reach anyone at Great Cabins despite the fact that we left messages. We happened to know the owner so we contacted him. He was able to finally get to Marty (after several hours) who brought 15 gallons of water, dropped it off without looking at the pump or even entering the cabin. On the 5th the owner Brian came up, brought us pizzas and more water, investigated the pump, apologized prophetically and kept trying to get someone to come fix the pump. After 3 DAYs we finally got water. The bathrooms smelled like outhouses, the hot tub was practically empty and we were at our wits end. No one from great cabins ever apologized for our trouble, offered compensation or offered to move us(which was not really what we wanted anyway). They did allow us to use another cabin for showers--nice, but not convienent! We all realize "IT HAPPENS" but I really think Brian should have been left out of the mix, Great Cabins should have been bending over backwards to make
      sure we were happy!

Response from Great Cabins in the Smokies - 07/29/2009

      Great Cabins in the Smokies

      Manager

      Terri,

I feel the need to respond and provide our side of the story. When you left a message on our after hours emergency system (it was around 5pm on July 4th), we received and responded to that message within 30 minutes. We were contacted by the property owner (whom knew you and whom you contacted directly about the issue, instead of notifying the rental company) about the water/well problem at about the same time that we received the message through our emergency phone system. We contacted you (actually, I spoke to a gentleman) at the cabin, asked enough pertinent questions about the water problem to immediately determine that the problem was the well itself. We are not well specialists and cannot service water wells. I explained that we would try to contact a well service company immediately but, given the fact that it was after hours and a holiday, it would be very likely the next day before someone from the well service company would be available. I delivered a supply of bottled water to the cabin and made arrangements for you to have access to another cabin up the street to utilize for showers. I also explained that we had no other large, comparable cabin to move you to (given the July 4th holiday period) but would try to expedite the repair of the well. I was told by two gentlemen at the cabin that you would prefer to stay at the Runaway cabin anyway and that the temporary arrangements offered were appreciated.

I did not need to enter the cabin because we knew from the symptoms that the problem was in the well itself, not the cabin. The problem was that the well pump motor had burnt out and had to be replaced. This involved pulling the pump from the well and installing a new pump - no easy task, even for a well service company. The well service company had the well work completed and the water back in service Monday morning. You were without water from Saturday evening until Monday morning (we would call that 2 days, not three), during which time we allowed you to utilize another cabin for showers and delivered to you bottled water (and the owner delivered water and pizza to you) for your use at the cabin.

Great Cabins does everything possible to make sure your stay is perfect but, sometimes, mechanical or electrical problems do occur. When this happens, we always apologize for the situation and go out of our way (and so do our owners!) to correct the problem as quickly as possible.

The Runaway was very accomodating to our large family. Everyone had their own space as well as great family rooms to enjoy everyones company. We enjoyed the close proximity to Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg, and Cades Cove. I would definitely recommend the Runaway to anyone.

The cabin was very nice and spacious. Plenty of room for family and friends. Good place to celebrate and have fun. The only negative issues we experienced were the stove eyes were malfunctioning and the shower in the loft leaked down into the bedroom below.

      Great view- nice location

Left on 01/21/2009 for a stay in December 2008

Nice house inside and out, great location in the mountains, easy to find, good roads, easy access from wears valley road into pigeon forge. It would have been nice to have TV in some of the bedrooms and large flatscreens in basement and livingroom. Fantastic view from the upstairs bedroom/loft, but could use some type of partition for noise/privacy/sunrise light.
