"Unbeatable!", "The best location of the town!", "The location can't be better"... those are just our guests review titles! In heart of downtown french concession, the most charming area in town, at the corner of Si Nan Rd and Tai Kang Rd.(the map here is incorrect, check the streets), these two famous streets offers two different characters: prestigious and hippie! Walk along beautiful Si Nan Rd is a pleasant and enjoyable experience by passing numbers of historic houses such as SunYat-sen residence, SiNan mansion and lovely Fuxing park... Tai kang Rd is absolute the latest hot spot in town where you find in "Tianzifang" all kinds of cute restaurants, cafes, galleries and boutiques! If those are too "boutique" for you, the new "SML" (sun moon light) shopping mall is around the corner where you can find an huge inexpensive food court in U1(underground 1), electronic "market" in U2, and in U3, the metro station!!

      Immaculate apartment in perfect location

Left on 05/17/2013 for a stay in May 2013

I was traveling as a solo tourist for my first time in Shanghai although second visit to China. I am a 69 year old retired american. My wife and I have stayed in many luxury vacation rentals around the world including in London, Paris, and New York. Staying at Shirley's Temple is like staying in one of the leafy tony neighborhoods in those other world capitals, but because of taxi and subway ease is better than any of those. This is a fifth floor apartment in one of five buildings (three apartments per floor) each with over 30 floors. The five buildings are luxury buildings in a gated, 24/7 guarded property around a well-tended large landscaped courtyard. This apartment has a beautiful courtyard view. Quite upscale. Shirley is a great host. She arranged for her driver to meet me at the airport and for him to take me on another day to an out-of-town spot I wanted to visit. Her housekeeper came three times during my 8 day stay. Shirley also bought me excellent seats at the symphony at the architecturally significant new Shanghai Oriental arts Center. The apartment has plenty of closet space; however, I travel light and did wash using her easy-to-use clothes washing machine (with her soap and softener) and fold up drying rack to put up in the sun-room off the bedroom. The bathroom is a luxury tiled bathroom, with usual amenities appropriate for a five-star hotel. Although I only made breakfast there, the kitchen is fully equipped for gourmet cooking and a large dining table seating six. There is a purified water dispenser in the kitchen from which I filled my bottles for my daily touring. The living room couch folds down into a queen sized bed. Shirley graciously met me upon arrival late on a Friday night and showed me all the facilities of the apartment which was immaculate, with beautiful hardwood floors and a firm, comfortable king-sized bed. She made sure that I could use her Wi-Fi and satellite TV. She also arranged an art tour for me the next day and at 22:00 on the night of my arrival before she departed, generously walked me to the luxury health-gourmet supermarket with European brands and the nearest subway station. Both of these are within a three minute walk through the courtyard and a the locked pedestrian gate from the property. Exit 1 to the Dapuqiao station on Line 9 is a three minute walk from the building. Within 2-3 minutes walk from the building on Taikang Road there are many shops for boutique clothes shopping, high-style gift and leather stores, several sidewalk cafes and also stalls with a wide variety of fresh vegetables, fruit and fish and meat. Don't worry -- no poultry. Twenty meters from the gate is the intersection of Taikang Lu and Sinan Lu, which are small streets but very well known in the city with many taxis dropping and picking up there until late into the night. It was quite easy for an English-speaker to tell a taxi driver anywhere in the city the street names of that intersection for safe speedy return. Also, three blocks (about 15 minute walk) up tree-lined Sinan Lu from my building is the beautiful restored Sinan Mansion area including several excellent restaurants, both Chinese provincial and international. Three blocks in the other direction is the 5-star Pullman Hotel which has a fully equipped fitness center (including sauna and steam rooms) and where non-hotel guests can pay a modest daily rate. I will try to stay in Shirley's Temple again whenever in Shanghai.

      Magical.

Left on 12/11/2012 for a stay in December 2012

My wife and I spent two weeks in this gem of an apartment. It was our first time staying at an apartment, instead of a hotel, while traveling abroad. Probably the best decision we made for the trip.

The apartment is very quiet, clean, and well-appointed. Shirley, the owner, gave us a warm welcome and went out of her way to make sure we were comfortable. The apartment is located in one of the nicest areas in Shanghai; the neighborhood is literally bursting at the seams with all manner of restaurants, cafes, bars, art shops and boutiques, as well as interesting people from all over the world. It was really easy to explore the rest of the city because the metro station is a three-minute walk away.

We had trouble coming to terms with leaving what in our minds had become our apartment, by the end of our stay. It is *that* comfortable. My wife especially loved the place because she was able to make roasts using the oven; I was crazy about the enormous bathtub, which I used daily.

I wish I had more stars to give, but alas, I can only give 5. I absolutely love this place, and most definitely recommend it to anyone who is looking to have a fantastic vacation in Shanghai.

      Aderful experience in beautiful Shanghai

Left on 11/29/2012 for a stay in July 2012

I have been travelling for the last 40 years, mostly for busines. Hotels were always 4 or 5 stars. Now I am retired and am travelling extensively. It was my very first experience renting an apartment instead of a hotel room. What a great decision. I stayed from July 18th to July 28th.I give it a 5 star ++.
The location is excellent, the clean, efficient and safe Shanghai Metro is just a few steps away. As well a very nice and big shopping center. A lot of choice for food just around and the so nice art district, my visit to Shoubai art on lane 210 of Taikang road was quite an experience, came back with 2 great artwork, just a few steps from the condo.
If you do not feel like going to a restaurant you can buy food from all over the world in the supemaket located in the same building as the Metro.
There is so much to do in Shanghai you will finnd the location perfect, a lot of information about where to go is available in Shirley's rental. The maid came in on a regular basis, and did the dishes and made sure everything was tidy and clean. The building is in a very safe location, also, considering Shanghai is a very big and populated city I was suprised at how quiet it was in the room.
I reccommend without any hesitation. A stay you will enjoy,I felt being at home although I live in Montreal, Canada. Pierre, a very happy customer

Thank you for the great reviews, though I had already 23 5 star reviews, I appreciated yours the most, guess why? I just had the only one "other review' :) because some guest complained about renovations noisy and you mentioned by chance that the apt is "surprisely quiet in middle of the city", Thank You for saving me! :)

Thank you for sharing your exciting experience at the neighborhood so that other guests can benefit from you!

Left on 11/06/2012 for a stay in October 2012

shirley our host greeted us warmly upon our arrival...fantastic apartment..fabulous location..and with the constant assurances in every email that it was a very quiet place ..it seemed perfect...until the horrendous noise started at 8am...the walls shook with the drilling and constant banging...it was a nightmare...

shirley ...she assured us... was more surprised than we were when we reported the deafening renovations that were taking place...her advise to us was to go and get a room in a nearby motel if we were not 'happy'...and then she would ask her accountant to get our money back to us...

that is not a positive option when time is short and you are strangers in a new city... so when we suggested a 50% rate cut (even then we wouldn't have booked it in the first place had we known of the terrible noise..) she reluctantly agreed to a 20% rebate...she assured us there would be no noise at the weekend as it was against the law...however it was worse...when we contacted her she insisted we rang the police to make a complaint...she did not want to know...

our enquiries led us to believe that the renovations had been in progress for some time and we knew we had been duped...

as we said..great place great location...but be careful...

      Dear Huihui & Peter,

      Happy New Year!

Thank you for your generous 1 star which made my little temple finally after two and half years our "all 5 star reviews" somehow more "true" :)

As I don't like the fact that my guest stayed in the apt and being so negative, even just one out of hundreds (I'm an artist and perfectionist:), therefore I'd like to share 2 points here, maybe you would feel better by trusting others a bit (including "shirley":)...

First, as an only chinese guest I have had so far, I thought you would understand better about the "china's renovation situation" :) As you knew, the apt itself is VERY quiet as my other guests mentioned in their reviews. if this coffer shop around the corner did renovation, they didn't (need to) inform anyone as long as they work between 8am to 6pm in the week only (which I confirmed from all neighbors and security guys!), plus I don't live there so I wasn't aware of it, otherwise I would have told you, or otherwise I wouldn't tell you to move to another hotel and return all your payments, logic?!

Second, if the noisy was really so bad, any guests would be more than happy to move out (there are plenty hotels around) with my promising of "ALL MONEY BACK", that was the best I could do to my guests, your 50% off request wasn't taken because the "horrible noisy" would be still there! I have to admit I was a bit "didn't want to know" at the end, simply I didn't how to help you: the renovation took place normal, you got what you wanted: STAY in the apt with DISCOUNT...

However, I wish you and your husband a HEALTHY and HAPPY 2013!

all the best from shanghai, shirley

Great location makes for real Shanghai experience

Left on 10/10/2012 for a stay in October 2012

This truly is a real gem. So glad we found it and if we ever get back to Shanghai we would definitely stay here again. Shirley was there when we arrived to welcome us and spent over an hour explaining the apartment and local area to us. She provided a mobile phone to use for all local calls and even assisted us via phone to complete some purchases in the Fabric market. The apartment is a home away from home and has everything you could want. Plenty of space for a family and became our 'home' o relax in after a busy day exploring Shanghai. It's location is perfect for a true local experience. Set on a lovely old street and with Fuxing Park very close to see the local people out in the morning doing their tai chi, dancing, playing badminton and cards, practicing their instruments. A 2 min walk from front door takes you to historic old lanes with great boutiques and good range of eating places both in lanes and in mall across the street. If you like a sterile hotel that could have you anywhere in the world then stay in a hotel. But if you are seeking space, a homely environment, personal guide to Shanghai, a beautiful location and a real experience of Shanghai... Then look no further than this apartment. And it all comes at a good price too.

Best accommodation in our entire trip!

Left on 09/30/2012 for a stay in September 2012

Me and two other friends were spending one month travelling asia, and over entire trip Shirley's temple was by far the best placed we stayed in ( and we predominately stayed in hotels).

What impressed us the most was the enthusiasm Shirley had from the beginning to make sure we had everything we need and felt comfortable. The attention to detail also impressed us, from having a phone we can borrow to filtered water within the apartment.

The location of the apartment was great, right in the heart of french concession, nearby to the small alley ways with cafes and bars, and also close to a metro station if you needed to venture out. The amenities within the apartment was also great, heaps of space with a full kitchen and bathroom.

We only stayed here for 2 nights, as we were only in shanghai for a short period, but I would highly recommend this for anyone who is looking to visit shanghai for a long or short period. In the end I think you can find really good apartments in and around shanghai. The difference this rental property has to others is the service and Shirley's enthusiasm to make sure you have a great stay, and from my experience that's really hard to find.

The location of the apartment couldn't be better. Just around the corner you have Tian zi fang - old lanes with restaurants, galleries and small shops. Having lived in Shanghai for several years, we new that this would be a great location for our visit in Shanghai. Travelling with two young children, the apartment was a great place to take a break. The children particulary liked playing in the balcony room with the stone pillows. There were even games, books and pens for the children. The pick-up at the airport and handing over the key etc was all very smooth. We would definetly recommend the apartment to our friends.

The apartment was peaceful, secure and well-appointed. The housekeeper, who came twice a week, was very thorough, maintained the highest standards of care and was never intrusive.

The French Concession is a superb location. It is uniquely beautiful and there are lots of bars, restaurants and shops of all descriptions. The whole of Shanghai is accessible through the metro { Line 9, Damuqiao Rd. Station } and the bus services along Jianguo Road just around the corner.

For those who like to self-cater there are supermarkets in the basements of 918 Huai Hai Rd. and the Parkson store opposite. There is a small Chinese-style supermarket on Ruijin No. 2 Rd. betwwen Jianguo Rd. and Fuxing Middle Rd.

We were completely happy with the appartment, its location and the people we encountered there. We left them and Shanghai with regret. Shirley Zhao with her good taste, warm personality and tact has provided an exceptionally welcoming pied a terre in a quiet corner of a very dynamic city.

      Home away from home

Left on 06/19/2011 for a stay in June 2011

I have been traveling for business to Shanghai for six years and used to stay in the Salvo downtown (also good). I decided to switch to Shirley's Temple as I was looking for a place that would feel more like home than a hotel.

I have stayed there twice now and I love it. The apartment is very comfortable and elegantly decorated. Some of the things that I appreciate are the kitchen (I cook for myself sometimes), the washer, the English programs on TV, the balcony which is nice to sit on in the evening. It is part of a nice complex with a mix of Chinese residents and some expats.

The apartment is located in the French Concession, the most beautiful residential area in Shanghai. It still has many historic buildings and tree-lined streets. Close by (two minutes walk) is Tian Zi Fang, one of the few areas with historic Shanghainese architecture. It has been turned into a shopping area with many small art shops, cafes, and good restaurants. The massage place next to the apartment complex is also quite good. In general, there are many nice shops and restaurants in walking distance.

The apartment is outside the hustle and bustle of downtown Shanghai. However, it is easy to get to all the popular places fast by either subway or taxi. The subway station on line 9 is an easy five minutes walk. The taxi takes about 10 minutes to Xintiandi, People Square, Nanjing road, or the Bund and costs about us$2 to 3.

And just when you thought it could not get any better, I saved the best thing for last. Shirley treats her guests as personal friends visiting from out of town. She makes sure you get the breakfast foods you like (she even had her husband get me bread from a special German bakery they know!), gives good advice about things to do, and is genuinely interested to make sure that you feel at home and enjoy your stay. Every day, the ayi comes to help clean up. She too is very friendly though my Mandarin is not good enough to really talk to her.

      Highly recommended!

Shirley's temple was a fantastic resting place for us. We had plenty of room and used the fold out futon for the kids ages 5 and 3. Perfect neighborhood to walk and explore and plenty of restaurants that deliver. The kitchen was great for feeding hungry kids at all hours of the day. I hope to return to Shanghai someday and will stay here for even longer.

      A terrific rental experience

Left on 04/21/2011 for a stay in April 2011

My family and I stayed at Shirley's Temple 88 this week. It is, as billed, a wonderful place to stay, has an ideal location, and Shirley goes out of her way to make things work. It is within walking distance of what were, to us, the most interesting parts of the city. Shirley provided the materials needed for breakfast every day. The apartment had everything we needed, right down to laundy detergent and shampoo/conditioner. There is daily housekeeping. Shirley was eager to give us tips and ideas about places to go with our kids. We had a wonderful vacation, a fantastic location, were not jammed in a small hotel room, and found the whole experience to be great.

There is a spa next door for massages. You can see it from the window. Don't go if you are not up for something that varies from intense to painful, or at least that was our experience.

It is not a suite at the Four Seasons; it is a real apartment in a residential building. Excellent security, convenient elevator, groceries around the corner. We loved it and will book again on our next stay.

      Thanks Shirley!

Shirley's Temple - #1 for Sightseeing in Shanghai

Left on 04/12/2011 for a stay in April 2011

Everything previous reviewers have said about Shirley and her wonderful temple is true.
Shirley's Temple is the place to stay if you really want to get a sense of what it might be like to live in Shanghai. And that's exactly what we were after. We got it in spades. We got to live in a self-contained apartment in the (delectable) French Concession with all the comforts of home (filtered water, daily cleaning, full kitchen, washing machine, cable TV, heating/cooling, iphone docking station, wi-fi, yummy hot shower, +++...) while we 'inhaled' the colours and textures of Shanghai. We also got to experienced the warmth, hospitality and frienship of Shirley. These two things together combined to make our Shanghai experience truly exeptional.
Armed with wi-fi (for research) in the apartment, an i-phone application called 'Shanghai Taxi' and Shirley's free mobile (with which we were able to contact her for asssitance), we did a good job of getting around Shanghai in taxis with drivers that speak no English.

Shanghai is a great city with warm people and there is plenty to keep the whole family happy!
Thank You Shirley, Mark and Marlene and ofcourse the ayi with the beautiful smile that
brushed our mess away each day like magic!

      Best weekend in Shanghai!

Left on 11/14/2010 for a stay in November 2010

      Hi everyone,

I am not a person who usually writes reviews; however, in this case I am more than happy to make an exceptions. Shirley's temple is probably one of the best places if you are looking for high standards but also a friendly, almost family like, atmosphere.

Aside of the apartment's great locations and high standards, the "temple experience" is boosted by the best host I have ever met. Shirley was an exceptional host - sorting us out with airport pick up, a personal taylor as well as tips for partying and dinning.

Can't wait to visit Shanghai - in my opinion one of the best cities in the world - again and when the time comes there will be no question where I'll be staying!

Delightful apartment, excellent location, with top-notch hospita

Left on 10/03/2010 for a stay in September 2010

Shirley's Temple 88 apartment was exactly as described and more. Shirley provided a kind driver who was waiting for us at arrivals at Pudong airport, and we were welcomed in person by Shirley at her apartment (she lives elsewhere). In advance she had asked what food items we would like for breakfast, and her well-supplied kitchen allowed us to make eggs and bacon, muesli, and German bread and jam for a wonderful start to each day. Her apartment's decor was warm and inviting, and we never heard a sound from anyone else except when we opened the window to look out. Her housekeeper came invisibly to us, but cleaned and straightened up and made the bed.

Our teenage son was traveling with us, and he said the regular-mattress fold-out couch slept wonderfully. The queen-size bed in the bedroom was a firm, deluxe mattress, and the bedroom has a charming enclosed patio, which overlooks the courtyard garden below. The dining room table has six chairs, and the living room is spacious and equipped with flat-screen TV, many English satellite TV channels, wireless Internet, and a cabinet full of DVD movies. It was handy to have a German washing machine and clothes drying rack to wash our own clothes, but there is also an inexpensive laundry just across the street.

Shirley loaned us a Chinese mobile phone, which was very helpful for getting directions for a taxi ride back to the apartment. We also found the Metro subway line, which is about 5 minutes walk from the apartment: go into the SLC Shopping Mall and walk south to the other end of the mall and down to B2 level. The brand-new SLC Shopping Mall has name-brand (but expensive) shopping, and a broad variety of inexpensive items in the food court on the B2 subway level. And the French Concession shops that this area is know for begin about 20 meters outside the side courtyard gate. We loved these shops, though we were surprised to find them rather expensive.

We took City Bus #17 one day to the Bund, and this cost 2 RMB each from the bus stop (walk left out the main entrance gate, and then left at the first corner to the bus stop (about 100 meters around the corner). Metro was quick and easy and not overly crowded except rush hour; city bus was crowded but safe, air-conditioned and quicker to the Bund. Taxis were inexpensive, clean, and sometimes hard to find (not enough available or long queues) though we were there during a Chinese holiday time which made it extra busy.

We couldn't have been more impressed with Shirley's kindness, and highly recommend her apartment in every way. At the close of our trip, she arranged a private car to Pudong airport which cost 250 RMB; very convenient for 3 of us with our luggage, and took about 45 minutes, with door-to-door service.

My pictures confirm Shirley's good pictures exactly, though my fisheye lens shows a wider perspective of the apartment. Book with Shirley and it will really help you enjoy your stay in Shanghai.

Besides being spacious, clean and modern, this place offers also a great service to the guest. The owner provides food, mobile phone with chinese number and gives many advices about how to enjoy the city.

      Definitely a great choice.

Don't just visit Shanghai - live it!

Left on 09/21/2010 for a stay in September 2010

My partner & I stayed at Shirley's Temple 88 for a long weekend recently and it was perfect. The location is unbeatable - charming alley's of boutiques, art galleries, bars and cafe's on the door step, an easy named intersection to explain to taxi's to return home to right in the French Concession area of Shanghai only a few minutes to the best Shanghai has to offer. You'd be lucky to get a 3 star shoe box room for the price we paid but booking Shirley's Temple we enjoyed a comfortable huge one bedroom modern apartment. The stay includes daily housekeeping, internet, and optional breakfast but if you want to Live Shanghai and feel like an expat rather than a visitor - go for this option without question! It was awesome for a long weekend but if relocating, working on contract or something - it should absolutely be the first consideration.

      A truly memorable stay

Left on 09/20/2010 for a stay in September 2010

The "wow" effect started from the minute I walked in the apartment - in fact I called owner immediately to tell her how much I liked it... its spacious, functional but what truly striking is the carefully chosen decorative items represents the owner's unique taste well melted with local flavor as well as function of the room. e.g. a beautiful painting of bund and a stylish Chinese painting in the living room, the authentice black and white cooking pictures in the kitchen... and the more.

Overall its an unbeatable choice if you want to experience true Shanghai life in a french concession area... many small cafe and boutique shops within 5 min walking distance; a quiet but charming street just outside of compund covered with real french indus is a perfect romantic one to stroll down to major road of Huaihai... in addition, you will be also surprised to see the maid service is as efficient as any hotels... of course do not expect room service at mid might, but I am sure you will be out experience this charm city by that time :-)

I will definately ask for that experience if I visit back Shanghai!
