Description from the owner

A 1930's colonial apartment located on the 2nd floor of a historical building in the center of Shanghai is available for short term stay or long term lease.

The building was built in the 1930's by the British and the ground floor has been the home of one of Shanghai's oldest banks. The apartment was a service apartment for foreigners during that period and now has been totally renovated for modern western living yet still maintains its Old Shanghai flare. It features beautiful hardwood floors and has two large bedrooms plus a den, and two full bathrooms. All rooms have 12ft high ceilings with crown molding that reflects its historic...Read more

      great place to stay

Left on 01/19/2013 for a stay in January 2013

our family of 5 [ 2 adult children plus 14 y/o ] stayed at Janies' apartment during a short stopover in Shanghai . She arranaged airport tranfers , both ways which were moderately priced . We found the drivers were very polite and helpful.
as others have said the apartment is well laid out , lots of room , 2 ensuite bathrooms , good kitchen , washing machine , even a drinking water fountain and had 2 queen size beds and a couch bed [ which we found to be more than adequate].
It is over the road from a shopping centre that sells lots of 'bargains' ...but you have to barter hard !!! there are lots of restaurants nearby , cafes and a small supemarket in Marks and Spence and a larger one in the basement of Isetan further up Nanjing road.

its only a shortwalk to all the shops and a pleasant walk to the Bund . We felt very safe walking around day and night .
Janie was very helpful and prompt answering emails prior to our visit and her staff gave us cell phone numbers in case we needed anything [,like not being able to gett the internet to work ].

thanks for letting us use your apartment , we would gladly use it again and recommend others to use it

      Great location, very cosy apartment

Left on 11/15/2012 for a stay in September 2012

I stayed in Shanghai for four nights in Sep with my parents and my kids (3 and 9 months at the time). From the time of booking, the owner Janie was very helpful and flexiblle with all sorts of arrangements, which we appreciated very much. When we arrived in Shanghai, i was very impressed with the apartment interior decoration. Then i found that the place is really well equipped - i have brought my own shampoo etc however it's not necessary at all. The apartment's location is very central too. With two kids, i took them out during the day for family activities by taxi which costs nothing, then after they went down in the night i can simply walk to central shopping area for few hours "me time". In summary, this apartment is great value for money and absolutely worth it.

      Great apartment with real character

Left on 11/11/2012 for a stay in November 2012

We stayed at the Old Shanghai apartment earlier this week and could not have been happier with the our time in Shanghai. The apartment is well located on West Nanjing Road in easy walking distance to a metro station on the line linking both airports and the main long distance railway station. The apartment is well equipped with all you need for longer stays including a washer/drier and cable TV including international services. But best of all it has real character dating from the 1920s - we would certainly stay here again if ever in Shanghai again. We have stayed in privately owned apartments all over the world and this is certainly one of the best.

      Great location in Shanghai.

Left on 08/17/2012 for a stay in July 2012

We had a wonderful 5 day stay ay Old Shanghai apt. It is in a very central location on West Nanjing Road with many shops and restaurants around and 2 subway stations close by. It is on a busy street but the apartment is at the back of the block and we were not disturbed by noise at all.
The apartment is very nicely decorated with lovely Chinese and art deco furniture - a lovely "step back in time." After traveling in China for a month, it was great to have the space and facilities this apartment offered, tea and coffee were provided as well as all the essentials you need in a home - even washing powder for the washing machine!
We had trouble with the internet connection and the televisions but Janie organized for someone to come around to fix both and followed up to make sure it was all working okay.
It was a great place to stay in Shanghai and I would highly recommend it to others.

      Old Shanghai Treasure

Left on 01/04/2012 for a stay in December 2011

On our first visit to Shanghai we spent two weeks in this comfortable and perfectly located apartment. You enter the building from the Nanjing Road West - a busy shopping sreet, take the lift to the first floor and enter your private, colonial style haven. The beds are large and comfortable and the 2 en-suite shower rooms are modern and practical. The kitchen is well equipped and the lounge cosy - it soon felt like home. The owner and her staff are most helpful and communication by e-mail or 'phone is easy. Shanghai is a fantastic city and the best thing about the apartment is its central location a 10 minute walk from People's Square.

Old World Charm with Modern Conviniences

Left on 11/30/2011 for a stay in November 2011

Stayed at the apartment in early November [two adults + two kids + a toddler] and Janie the owner has been really helpful and accommodating. We felt very at ease liaising with her right from the first email exchange. Could not thank her enough for allowing us early check in as our flight arrived at 6am and for arranging the driver pickup as well other advise on tipping and locations. As for the apartment, it looks as wonderful as the pictures and more. It gives you a real taste of Shanghai which you could not find in hotels. Everything that you need is there right down to the laundry and cleaning equipments especially for those little accidents and spills. The ensuites in both rooms are an added bonus. The location is simply great. Everything is within walking distance like shopping, food, pharmacy, atm, park. Who wants to return to a small and cold hotel room when you can have a nice and cosy apartment. Thanks again Janie!

Fantastic character apartment for a family stay in Shanghai

Left on 11/29/2011 for a stay in November 2011

Our family of five thoroughly enjoyed our 10 day stay in the Old Shanghai apartment. From the beginning, Janie the owner was very responsive and all went smoothly meeting up with her assistant Susan to check in. The apartment, in particular the bedrooms are very spacious and full of character. Everything was very clean, tidy and tastefully decorated. There are some very nice touches such as the beautiful smell of fresh flowers when we walked in. The beds were very comfortable and the bathrooms worked well. The internet connection was easy to set up. Our children enjoyed watching the satellite television in their big bed! The kitchen has everything you would need. Being big coffee drinkers we were very excited to see Italian style stove top coffee makers. One thing we didnt know, but came in handy with our pram and luggage, is that the building has a lift. The area around the apartment is busy enough to be interesting but is not too overwhelming. We didnt find it noisy at all but are used to living in an inner city environment. We also felt very secure and safe in the apartment and the surrounding areas. The dumplings from the "hole in the wall" just below the apartment are worth a try! There is also a good western style supermarket (City Shop) in the Portman Hotel (Shanghai Centre) basement about 25 mins walk west. Also in that centre, we would highly recommend the great bread at Baker and Spice cafe. Baker and Spice is related to Wagas café chain (closest is Citic Square further west on Nanjing Road) where you can get good coffee and some great sandwiches if you get over rice and dumplings! The apartment is a great base to walk to many of the attractions in Shanghai (it is a big city!), such as People's Square and Nanjing Road (East). There are 4 floors of market style shopping just across the road if you are game- bargain hard is my tip! We had a wonderful time in Shanghai and hope to be back.

      Great find in Shanghai

Left on 10/19/2011 for a stay in September 2011

This is was a great charming place for our family to stay in Shanghai. The deco is confortable western with great european accents. The place is very convenient. Great for short or longer term stay. Apartment is quiet, since it does not face the main NanJing Road. Arranging for the apartment's rental agreement was very smooth with the owner. She was very responsive. Knowing that we had a 9 months old baby, she arranged to have a nice crib setup during our stay. Checkin was very professional. Her assistant helped us with the luggage and provided us with all the information at the checking-in. Sept was still hot, the a/C in the apartment worked great. We didn't cook except using the fridge, laundry machine, all worked well. Two large bedrooms were very spacious. Each bedroom had well designed bathroom with Showers.

Great place with a lot of charm

Left on 09/08/2011 for a stay in August 2011

This apartment is as charming as the pictures show. My three friends and I stayed a weekend here and loved it. Both bedrooms are very stylishly furnished and the kitchen is modern and well-equipped. It is also in a great location, with a cafe across the street and great shopping nearby. It is also priced very well and Janie, the landlord, was responsive to all our queries, including general questions about Shanghai. I was extremely satisfied.

A great place to stay for sight-seeing in Shanghai

Left on 08/04/2011 for a stay in July 2011

The location of the apartment couldn't have been more perfect. The bus to the bund is right at the front door. The metro line 2 station is less than 5 minutes away. The aTM is also right down stairs. If the weather permits (which it often did not during July), it is also an easy walk to Xitiandi, People's plaza, and boutiques on Maoming Lu and Changle Lu.
The apartment was roomy enough to accommodate our family of four. My husband liked the old style decor in an old building with the modern conveniences like the roomy showers.
The maids did a great job keeping the apartment clean despite the constant disruptions of my two kids.
The owner, Janie, was very responsive and helpful with all my requests.
The only downside is the KungFu place across from the alley. They tend to get a bit noisy in the early evenings, particularly on weekends. Otherwise, it is very quiet at night.

This beautiful apartment exceeded our expectations. The location was excellent, walk to the subway, restaurants and shops everywhere, walk to People's Square, and a great bakery just across the street. Awesome massage parlor two blocks away with $10 sixty minute massages my daughter and I enjoyed almost daily. The beds were comfortable, air conditioning worked great, kitchen well equipped. Felt safe and secure there, and just can't say enough good things. So glad we didn't stay in a hotel. Highly recommend this classy vacation rental to others. The apartment owner also went above and beyond to help us figure out logistics and even arranged some activities for us, like a visit to her tailor who is custom making a couple business suits for my daughter. All in all, the perfect home away from home and we will go back.

No. 1 choice of vacation rental in Shanghai!

Left on 06/20/2011 for a stay in June 2011

During the spring break, we rented a vacation apartment in Paris. It was so much fun we wanted to do it again for our trip to Shanghai. The vacation rental selection in Shanghai is much more limited than in Paris, so after extended research I am very glad to have found the Old Shanghai apartment.

From the very beginning, Ms. Janie, the owner, has been extremely responsive and helpful. Her warm and informative emails quickly put my mind at ease and my enquiries were always answered within hours. She even went out of her way to compile an extensive list of restaurants for us. The whole booking process was smooth and simple.

Once we arrived at the apartment, we were very impressed by its old-world charm with original woodwork and high ceilings. It’s also very clean and more spacious than we expected. All the modern amenities work as promised. Our son quickly set up his train set and other toys in the den. He also enjoyed watching Nickelodeon program in English and having his own en-suite bathroom. During our stay, there were a couple of very hot and humid days when the temperature hit the high 90s. Since all rooms are equipped with aC, we were able to stay cool and comfortable. Despite its downtown location, the apartment faces a small alley and the back of another building, so it’s very quiet at night.

Speaking of location, it is so easy to go to practically everywhere from the Old Shanghai apartment! It’s a 5-10 minute walk to Wujiang Rd where there are tons of restaurants as well as the #2 subway station. Going the other direction, it’s a 10-15 minute walk to the Nanjing Rd pedestrian shopping area and the People’s Park. Xintiandi is only a short cab ride away. Atm is right downstairs. One morning we took a quick bus ride to the Bund from the bus stop right outside the apartment. We didn’t use the coffee maker in the apartment because there is a Starbucks within 10-minute walk on either direction, plus the tea stand downstairs makes great iced coffee. Because of the convenient location, we were able to rest and relax between activities.

Janie’s son and her assistant did a great job of checking us in and out. The fresh flower & fruit was a nice touch. The cleaning lady was very courteous. Every thing works out perfectly! Thank you Janie!!

Great stay in a perfect location

Left on 06/01/2011 for a stay in May 2011

I stayed in this apartment for 1 month in the summer of 2011.

I normally stay in luxury hotels when I travel, but since I wanted stay for a longer time this time, and because I wanted a more "Chinese" experience, I decided to rent an apartment. I was important for me to find an apartment that had some extra space, so my brothers family could visit, and to have a representable place that I could entertain guests in. Before I choose this apartment I did some research on the net, and through my contacts I asked a Chinese girl that works for one of the consulates there to check a little bit for me in the local publications, this apartment was the one I found that seemed the best for me.

After staying there I am happy with my choice, the location was really perfect.

Since I am more used to hotels I requested linen changes and housekeeping more often than usual for the apartment, I was happy with this even if the service was somewhat irregular.

Sometimes there was a bit of noise in the daytime, due to construction work in the area, but the nighttime was really quiet, even though it is in a central location.

My brothers family visited me, so I have some experience on how the apartment is with children. Janie helped us rent a baby crib for the baby, and they also had a five year old that slept in the den. I did not use the kitchen before they came, but with the children we started to prepare breakfast and sometimes lunch so we appreciated the nice kitchen. Even with a lot of people we never had any trouble with the hot water for shower, and the maids made sure we always had enough of the drinking water.

I entertained some guests there, both local an western, all of them were impressed by the style and the decoration of the apartment.

It was easy to get hold of Janie, and she was most helpful!

      Old Shanghai Elegance

Left on 05/27/2011 for a stay in March 2011

My husband and I run an old victorian style B&B; in San Francisco(www.innsf.com)for more than 20 years. Whenever we travel abroad we like to experience the old and the new. When we found out about this Old Shanghai apartment available for vacation stay we can't wait to try it. It's not a B&B; but what the apartment can offer is more than we ever ask for. The place is located in an old building still have few local residences lived there go back to the 40's . Yet this completely renovated unit kept it's old charms with all the new comforts we desire especially after a long 13 hours flight cross the pacific ocean. We appreciate the ornate woodwork and past splendor and the elegance appearance of this old charm building.
The spacious bedrooms and the modern kitchen, bathrooms makes oour stay very relaxed. The comfortable beds throw all the city sounds far far away. We love the location which is in the French quarter area, very convenient with all sorts of public transportation around, the wide assortments of restaurants, boutiques plus small local run breakfast shops down in the alley like the morning port buns was something you have to try it yourself to tell the true taste of Shanghai.
We typically enjoyed our own happy hour time having a glass of wine in the living room embrace this taste of old Shanghai experiences after a day of walking of this fascinating explosive city. We want to thank the owner additional maid service even we only stay for four nights. The welcome fruit and flower in the apartment is a nice touch !! Thank you Janie !!
We will recommend to all our hotel guests to visit Shanghai and stay there to experience this very different Shanghai adventure ...

      A taste of real Shanghai

Left on 05/15/2011 for a stay in April 2011

This lovely apartment is ideally situated to get around in Shanghai. Additional services were accommodated and service was personalised and prompt. Perfect for two work colleagues with a large spacious bedroom and bathroom and smaller bedroom compensated with attached study area and its own bathroom. Free wireless internet - though be warned there is no smtp in China so you need a gmail or yahoo account and life is easy.
Can be a little noisy but that's all part of the charm of living in the heart of the French concession in Shanghai. Minutes from the Bund and nearby Xintiandi and the new Sinan Mansions dining and bar area and loads of fab little shops within walking distance.
