Description from the owner

Designed by L.E. Hudec in 1923 and constructed in 1924, the Normandie Building is a grand example of Neoclassical architecture inspired by the French Renaissance period. The red brick apartment building is particularly striking in its entirety. Over the years the lower two levels with a composite facade have been repeatedly repainted in colors including gray, white and even sky blue. A historically accurate renovation was completed before the World Expo 2010. The revamp uncovered a textured granite-chip facade on the first two floors while the marble lobby was returned to its original creamy-gold. Famous film directors and actors of the 1940s...Read more

    Additional Location Information

Huaihai Road Middle used to be the most fashionable road in old Shanghai. Formerly named Avenue Joffre in the early 20th Century, this 6-kilometer boulevard was likened to the Champs-Elysees in Paris, Fifth Avenue in New York and Ginza in Tokyo. This lovely apartment located in a historical building is a treat for any travelers.

Wukang Road lies in the northwest of Xuhui District and belongs to Hengshan Road-Fuxing Road Historical and Cultural Landscape Zone. Wukang Road adjoins Middle Huaihai Road in the south and Huashan Road in the north, extending 1,100 meters in total. Built in the late 19th century, Wukang Road is one of the oldest roads in the western part of Shanghai.

In the 1930s, the layout of the road was established and the architectures along the road were basically constructed. On both sides of the road, there are 11 buildings under protection and 37 historical architectures, which are representative garden-style residences of the modern Shanghai. Many celebrities, including Ba Jin, a renowned writer, once lived there, and endowed the road with deep historical and cultural flavor.

      Charming Colonial living

Left on 11/04/2012 for a stay in October 2012

This place is located in the southwestern edge of the French Concession and was conveniently close to the Xuhui, where our friends were. It is conveniently located, with a market nearby, and across from an interesting tourist attraction and nearby to the american Consulate. The apartment is roomy for Shanghai, with high ceilings, and has lots of character. Good kitchen, two baths, and a washer/dryer. The bed mattresses are a bit thin and could use a bit more padding. We had a full water cooler and some extras in the fridge. Marx is an attentive host and a great resource for travelers like us. All in all, a great experience for us in the city.

Superb apartment- A home away from home

Left on 01/12/2012 for a stay in December 2011

My family and I spent six nights in Shanghai in December and we were initially booked to stay in one of the many nondescript hotels in the city until a recommendation from a friend to check out the Normandie apartments. And as luck would have it, the apartment was available during the dates we were there.

Booking it was easy and Marx was most helpful in the process and also throughout our sojourn in the city. My parents and sister were very pleased with the apartment (two bedrooms, two bathrooms) as it has every mod-con available (including lots of Dvds) and the feel is of a very cosy family apartment and pleasantly decorated (there were even fresh lilies). It is centrally located and within a five-minute walk away from two tube stations and the bus stop is just downstairs. The building itself was designed by a French architect and built in the 1920s and is full of character.

The surrounding area is nice and retains a quiet atmosphere which is rare in a bustling city and the apartment is directly opposite the former residence of Mdme Soong Qing Ling, which is now a museum. Other architectural delights are just a short walk away.

All in all, it was a brilliant holiday made more so by having a 'home' to go back to every night after a hectic day sightseeing and shopping.

An excellent decision to stay here, even if I do say so myself!

Marx was indeed helpful, making sure that we are comfortable and his recommendation of places to eat and visit were spot on. we even rented an e-bike for a few days to move about in Shanghai, it was an amazing experience for me and my girlfriend. We are in love with Shanghai now and will be back soon, and we will recommend Marx's apartments to all our friends coming to Shanghai

      Great Place

Left on 11/29/2011 for a stay in November 2011

I previously lived in Shanghai for 5 years and know the city well. Marx has done a great job.

Location - as good as it gets, in the middle of the former French Concession, near to historical buildings, many of the best bars, shops and restaurants, 5 mins walk from subway.

Apartment - well decorated, spacious, modern kitchen with oven (a rarity in Shanghai), quiet despite being on one of the city's main roads. Be careful, the hot water feed can get very hot!

Extras - dvd player, idock, wifi, cable. Occasionally cable went down but this is Shanghai - it happens. Besides, you should be out exploring one of the best eating cities in the world, not sat inside watching a Dallas boxset (my friends once did this). Toaster, microwave, cutlery, soap, hair dryer, iron and board, washing up liquid, powder, softener and bleach provided.

Cleanliness - maid came every 3 days, fine for us. I think extra visits can be negotiated at extra cost. Place was spotless on arrival and bed sheets were changed regularly.

Service - Marx was friendly, prompt in answering queries and knowledgeable about the city. He'd put some beers in the fridge for us on arrival. The check in process was streamlined, straightforward and professional. He kept in touch with us throughout our stay but never intruded. Imo he has pitched his service at exactly the right level.

Value - not the cheapest but good value given the location, quality and service. Having come from an absolute dump that was exactly the same price as Marx's apartment but in a much worse location, filthy, dingy, rude and indifferent host (host is alex, Loaximen Condo on Xizang South Road via airBNB website - do not stay there!!), it is absolutely worth the money. Unfortunately, Shanghai is no longer a cheap city, especially with rising house prices.

Overall - we'll be back for sure. Showed it to our friends in Shanghai and they were similarly enthused. Great.

      Character, Location, Ease of mind

Left on 11/03/2011 for a stay in November 2011

High ceilings, character architecture and a local feel all within easy walking of French Concession sights and restaurants - close to the metro for easy access to anything in Shanghai.

My partner and I traveled with our adult daughter and partner, staying on a week after they left. Marx gave a warm welcome on arrival and remained available to trouble shoot the (tricky) sound/TV/DVD system and generally checked in to ensure our comfort and satisfaction - very much appreciated! Some amenities common to international travel would be appreciated (soap, kettle). Flowers on arrival were a nice touch, as was coffee and beverages. Great to have a washer available. Will stay at the ShortStay Normandie apt. again!

      Charming place albeit overpriced

Left on 10/16/2011 for a stay in October 2011

This is a very charming and tastefully decorated apartment in a historical building. It's perfectly located to explore the French Concession, close to nice restaurants, shops,... Marx is very cooperative and responds quickly to any problem or demand. The cleaning and laundry service could improve considerably. The flat needs some fixing although the basic services work fine. My impression after spending over a month in Shanghai is that there is ample room to negotiate the fee (too high).

      Sangat Bagus! (Excellent)

Left on 08/05/2011 for a stay in June 2011

Until June this year, my wife and I had never stayed in a century-old apartment. So it was with some reservations that we booked a 4-night stay at the historical Normandie apartments in Shanghai recently. We wondered whether the building was structurally sound and safe, whether it was haunted, whether the lifts would work... But these unfounded thoughts were dispelled the moment we stepped into our 2-room apartment on the 2nd floor.
Although the building looks a bit antiquated from the outside, it is nevertheless majestic and solid; the 2 lifts do their jobs most efficiently and it was fun to ride as the experience gave us some 'glimpse' into the day-to-day life of Shanghai in the '30s, the Pearl of the Orient, the Paris of the East...
The rooms are very spacious, well appointed, quiet and comfortable. The kitchen and bathrooms (and there are two!) are fitted with the amenities that one would find in a 5-star hotel apartment.
The location is great, with easy access to shopping , restaurants, cafes and sightseeing.
In short, our 4-night stay at the Normandie was as restful and comfortable as our home in Malaysia and we could not have been more pleased.
Admittedly, the apartment provides no room service, but this did not in any way inconvenient us because Marx, the Manager, was as resourceful and helpful as a hotel concierge.
Would we make a return stay? Sure, we would. Would we recommend to others? Absolutely, we would. As a matter of fact, we have already done so.

      Fantastic!

Left on 08/04/2011 for a stay in July 2011

The Normandie apartment located in the French Concession, Shanghai was nothing short of fantastic! This quirky, magical and nostalgic building takes you back in time circa 50s Shanghai with all the modern creature comforts of today. I will only stay at the Normandie from now as i thoroughly enjoyed the privacy and top location of this property.

This apartment is not suitable for those who want 24 hour room service and hotel amenities. However, if you're young, hip and have a bit of change to spare - this is the perfect place for you. You have your own kitchenette (stacked with all the necessary appliances) 2 bathrooms and 2 big bedrooms with lux interior and a really cool living / dining area that looks out onto the French Concession.

I must also mention Marx... the guy who greeted me at check-in. He was amazing... he managed to get me a reservation at a very popular eatery in Shanghai even though it was "fully booked"! Even though i was charged a fee for this service, I was suitably impressed :)

I can't wait to head back to "my" apartment in Shanghai again!
