Shap - best of all worlds

Left on 08/16/2012 for a stay in July 2012

Shap is a lovely village, marred somewhat by the a6 which cuts through it. We all enjoyed the food from the butcher, opposite the cottage, and my children spent some hours in the (heated) outdoor pool. The chippy was good for those evenings when it was too late to cook, and the Co-Op was useful and cheerfully staffed.

The cottage was a lovely place to come home to, to sit and watch the Olympics after a day out in the hills somewhere. We were very comfortable.

Being in Shap gave us the opportunity to choose where ever was sunny on the day, with access to the north and south lakes, the Westmoorland hills and Hadrian's Wall, all equally near, and the Eden Valley is delightful. We have good memories of looking back over the Lakeland fells and up into Scotland from Hartside on our way to Hadrian's Wall and the view of the lakeland panorama looking north from arneside Knotte was amazing. We were rained on once in two weeks, which is not bad for the Lake District, especially this year! We also visited three castles and several National Trust properties, as well as walking around Ullswater and the mines below the Old Man of Conniston. The food at the Bluebird Restaurant was great. The climbing wall at Kendal was awesome.

We were very happy with the service that we received from the Cottage Holliday Group from the first conversation on the phone, and the cottage was clean and well cared for. The only quibble was that we could have done with more equipment in the kitchen, but we managed. This was a good holiday, and well worth it.

An enjoyable stay in a convenient location for the Lake District

Left on 11/10/2011 for a stay in October 2011

A lovely property which had been recently decorated to a high standard. We particularly enjoyed the benefits of the wood burning stove in the evenings. Some work was still ongoing in the rear garden at the time of our visit but this was not detrimental to our stay. Whilst some might find Shap fairly isolated, we loved the fact that it was not too touristy and also close to the M6 for easy access to the wider Lake District and close to some lovely walks in the Shap fells and nearby Haweswater.

A pleasant day out within easy driving distance of Shap

We had our 2 dogs with us and found the accommodation to be excellent and met our needs very well. Good choice of places to eat/drink very close by. Cottage was homely and provided a large enclosed back garden.
