SKI RESORTS: For the winter ski season, the house has close proximity to two local family-friendly mountains. Catamount Ski Resort is just 6 miles away and Butternut is 12 miles away in Great Barrington. Jiminy Peak Ski Resort is a larger mountain with more advanced terrain and is 1 hour away. After your day on the hill, stop for dinner at the cozy Stagecoach Tavern, less than a mile from the house and serving wonderful farm-to-table cuisine.

HIKING: Race Brook Falls trailhead is a short walk down the dirt road where you'll discover a beautiful 3-tier waterfall It's not a stretch to say that "Hawaiian waterfall" comes to mind when you visit Race Brook during the summer months. With lush greenery created by waterfall mist, cascading water over rocks, wading pools, and peaceful surroundings, you can easily imagine yourself in a remote Hawaiian rain forest.

SWIMMING: A refreshing dip is a must for cooling off. Here are some ideas:
Green River Water Hole: amazing spot! (2.5 miles north from S. Egremont on Route 23)

Lake Mansfield: a 40 acre body of water less than a mile from downtown Great Barrington. The lake has historically been a site for recreation, social gatherings, and solitude. Generations of swimmers have enjoyed its cool waters. A small beach with lifeguard and roped off swimming area is great for families with children.

Beautiful home in a great location

Left on 05/16/2013 for a stay in May 2013

We just returned form our week long stay at "August Moon" is Sheffield and we wish we could turn right around and go back!! What a wonderful magical place it is. The area is incredible. The house is situated a short walk away from beautiful hiking trails. We took our five year old on several hikes where through the woods to a beautiful waterfall, and encountered such wonderful flora and fauna (deer, peepers, butterflies, may flowers, tree trunks bitten by beavers). And there is even an incredible farm to table restaurant a two-minute walk from the house that rivals some of the best restaurants in NYC! A short drive brought us to antiquing in Sheffield, markets in Great Barrington (Rubiner's cheese market was out favorite) and restaurants, concerts, theater, recitals, dance performances, historical sites, a Shaker village, swimming holes, in short, every thing we could have wanted in a beautiful serene surrounding. And if the area isn't enticing enough, the house alone was worth the trip. The owners have thought of everything. The house is beautiful and large but feels homey and cozy. Fire places or stoves in every corner, comfy sofas and chairs. The bedding is divine, and we slept so comfortably and warm! The kitchen has everything one could possibly want to cook and bake with. The grounds are exquisite, with a tennis court, a lush lawn and beautiful garden, and plenty of outdoor seating to lounge on in the sun or in the shade. We could not have been happier there, and we are already planning our next escape to beautiful august moon in Sheffield!!

      Great House with amazing Land!

Left on 03/13/2012 for a stay in March 2012

We rented this house for a long weekend with one other family (four adults, four young children total) and it was terrific! It was neat and clean when we arrived and was stocked with everything we needed from toiletries to kitchen essentials. The house is older but in great condition with a beautiful sun room and a great kitchen for cooking big meals. We had a blast playing in the snow in the immense back yard and my husband went skiing at Butternut which was close by. We also enjoyed some great breakfasts and lunches in Great Barrington which was only a 15-minute drive away. To top it off, the owners were great - very friendly and provided us with great restaurant recommendations! We would definitely rent here again!

      A Charming Country Christmas

Left on 01/16/2012 for a stay in December 2011

My family and I enjoyed a fabulous Christmas getaway at august Moon. The house couldn't have been more perfect for us. It was roomy and cozy at the same time. We loved the large Chef's kitchen - it was perfect for preparing our holiday feast! And close proximity to the adirondack Trail and Race Brook Falls made for a beautiful Christmas Day hike to work off those extra calories. More than the house itself, we were just so pleased with the efforts the Gregory's made to make us feel at home - the little holiday touches around the house, the robes and the toiletries in the bathroom really made us feel special. Run, don't walk, to rent this house! You will not be disappointed.

      Loved august Moon

Left on 01/04/2012 for a stay in December 2011

We recently stayed at august Moon for New Years Eve weekend. The house was absolutely perfect. Gorgeous kitchen stocked with everything. The beds were extremely comfortable and the property views were incredible. We had an opportunity to ski while we were up there and also hiked to a beautiful waterfall. The Gregory's thought of every detail. Would highly recommend this property!

      An amazing Family Weekend Getaway

Left on 01/02/2012 for a stay in December 2011

My husband and I were looking for a place to stretch out with our four young children to relax away from our city apartment life in early December. We emailed the owners, who responded promptly to each question.
We loved this historical country manor with classic and contemporary updates, modern conveniences and stylish furnishings. In each room, we discovered every amenity for a comfortable stay. The thoughtful details were impressive!
First, we explored the house, the grounds and the rec room - the hammock and ping-pong table were favorites! We drove a few miles to get groceries, made dinner in the fully-equipped kitchen, played games by a fire in the den. We slept well by the heat of the gas stove in the plush beds upstairs. The master bedroom, with its cathedral ceiling and bank of windowed doors, was magnificent. The secondary bedrooms were perfectly cozy for our children.
After a large breakfast made on the Viking stove and listening to music on that great little sound system, we took a hike to the waterfall on the appalachian trail just up the road (as recommended in the Gregorys' guidebook). The sight was breath-taking! And my kids were proud to reach the destination of their first trek. The jacuzzi at the house was perfect to take off the chill.
We napped, watched Star Wars in the den (again, great sound system!), did a puzzle in the sunroom.
I loved waking up to the quiet of the country and the western view of sky and forests, then walking down to the sunny, french-window lined kitchen to brew coffee. I studied the Gregorys' recommendations and found each one we tried to be spot-on (Lenox Coffee in Lenox, Route 7 Grill and Rubi's in Great Barrington).
We thoroughly enjoyed this weekend of luxurious country living in a peaceful, secluded setting. Simply, amazing.

      Top notch retreat

Left on 10/18/2011 for a stay in October 2011

After an unforgettable weekend, our group of nine NYC thirty-somethings would all agree that august Moon was utterly fantastic. The rarest of New England homes, historic bones with bright contemporary additions that neither overpower nor resort to neocolonial pastiche. A perfect blend of new and old, urbane and rustic. Well appointed throughout, and steps away from beautiful hiking trails. Our weekend included a 9 loop up and down mount everett, tennis, track day at Lime Rock, antiquing, outdoing each other's recipes on the monster Viking range, bbq'ing on the gas grill, stoking roaring fireplaces, and dj'ing a surprise hoard of fantastic vinyl (wink, inside the stools in the living room). What a great place, and not soon to be forgotten.

Home away from home but better!

Left on 10/16/2011 for a stay in October 2011

August Moon is a warm and cozy Four Star Hotel! Everything was very clean from the house itself to all the linens, towels, etc. It is stocked with everything you could possibly need for an extremely comfortable stay. We had a great time Columbus Day Weekend. Eight of us (four adults, two teenagers and two children) had more than enough room in this spacious home. We took advantage of all its amenities, including the tennis court, the appalachian Trail, (which is literally a five minute walk from the house and leads to a magnificent waterfall after a fifteen minute hike)a gourmet kitchen, a delightful sunroom which was by far the most used room in the house, a wonderful master suite with cathedral ceilings and so much more. You feel like you are a million miles away from civilization yet you are only 15 minutes from Great Barrington and Salisbury.

The only thing that was a bit of a challenge was the sloped ceilings in two of the bedrooms. It was fine for the little ones but was somewhat of a nuisance for the adults. However, I think with a little bit of furniture re-arranging that issue can disappear!

Thank you for sharing your lovely home with us. We hope to visit again next year!

Response from The Gregorys - 10/17/2011

      The Gregorys

      Owner

For all you tall folks, the house was built in the late 1700s so the three original guest bedrooms are small with low ceilings. As Rachel noted, the wood-beamed ceilings are slanted in two of the rooms with the queen beds. But the rooms are cozy and tastefully appointed with quality linens, down pillows and high-thread-count sheets. The master bedroom is an addition that was built in the 80s and it is spacious with vaulted ceilings. Put the tallest members of your group in this room! ;-)

I had the wedding out our dreams here

Left on 09/22/2011 for a stay in September 2011

This house is a dream vactaion stay. The house itself is beautiful, so much character and comfort, with every 5-star amenity you can think of to make it your own. Good to stay any season- the views of the Berkshires from the property are unbelievable. My husband and I rented the property and had our friends and family stay comfortbly in preparation for our wedding. We had the ceremony in the yard, and rented a tent for the reception. Our wedding was the most beautiful and unique anyone had ever seen! August Moon will forever be in our hearts. The owners are lovely people and over the top accomadating. Whether you are having a wedding or extended vacation from the City, this is the most perfect place- so worth it - highly reccomended!

The best summer of my life!!!

Left on 08/26/2011 for a stay in August 2011

It has always been on my "bucket list " to spend a month in the Berkshires and I could not have had a better experience than at august Moon. Everything form the seamless check in to promptresponses to questions was flawless. The house was well equipped for cooking and entertaining and the grounds were impeccable. we found the house to be particularly well suited to guests who joined us for weekends. We felt they were comfortable but were also happy that we had a private suite that was incredibly spacious, cool and even had TV in the room.We found Sheffield to be very convenient to Great Barrington and a reasonable distance to Tanglewood and Jacob's Pillow with a number of decent restaurants around if you dont want to cook

We loved it and are planning to come back again next year!!!

      An absolute Gem!

Left on 07/24/2011 for a stay in June 2011

August Moon is an absolute gem in the Berkshires! My husband and I got married there outside on the grounds in June and were absolutely thrilled with everything! The house is owned by a lovely couple who couldn't have been nicer or more gracious. Their recommendations for the caterer, tent company, accommodations for our guests, florist, etc. were all stellar. It was like having our own wedding planner. The house is truly lovely. The kitchen is wonderful - prepare to cook all of your favorite recipes or if you are a non-cook, you might even be inspired to learn to cook. The sun room on the ground floor is lovely and relaxing with beautiful views. The master bedroom is gorgeous with sliding glass doors to a walk-around deck, looking out on spectacular views! The three other bedrooms are smaller and are all very comfortable with luxurious linens and comforters. The house has a beautiful stone patio which is perfect for dining outside...We can't say enough about the grounds. They are beautiful! Not only are both the house and grounds beautiful, we also found them to have magical energy. We saw wild turkeys roaming in one of the fields, had hummingbirds buzzing around one of the pretty hanging flower baskets and even had a songbird sitting under the umbrella with us one day as we ate lunch outside on the patio. Adding to the magical energy of the house and property, we were graced with a double rainbow that touched down end to end in front of the tent during our wedding dinner. On top of all of that, the owners love august Moon and take meticulous care of it. It truly is a gem in the Berkshires. It was very hard to leave at the end of our wedding week. We will definitely be back!

Left on 05/26/2011 for a stay in May 2011

We loved our stay at august Moon. Gorgeous grounds with plenty of room for kids to play. Neat stone patio is the perfect place to view lilacs in full bloom. Functional, large, well-equiped kitchen. Homeowners responsive and easy to work with. Bedrooms small (with the exception of the master) but met our needs perfectly. House and grounds easily absorbed the chaos of 2 families. Great location for outdoor activities (running, biking, hiking.) We'll be back!

A unique and memorable place that we loved

Left on 04/06/2011 for a stay in March 2011

This house is truly spectacular. Nested on a very large land, surrounded by beautiful trees, moutains and forests, you feel like on another planet while just minutes away from town, fantastic restaurants, antique stores and shops. A true sense of security and safety while being away from the world... Inside, each room is uniquely decorated and comfortable, with a mix of modern and elegant rustic furniture. The kitchen is like the ones you see pros using on TV... a dream come true. The living room is bright and sunny with beautiful furniture. The master bedroom is spectacular and overlooks a beautiful landscape. It has a great bathroom with both showe and jacuzzi bathtub. Guest rooms are comfy. You have two full bathrooms upstairs (master and guests) and another full one downstairs - which is perfect. All amenities (washer, dryer, internet, satelite TV, etc...). Even a tennis court. This place is simply magic. It is very hard to leave it after having had the opportunity to enjoy it for a whole season. This home has a soul - We love it as you can see. And the owners are a wonderful young couple who have been so nice with us. If our kids ever get married, that's the place where we should do it! Enjoy!

      Wonderful Weekend at august Moon

Left on 11/01/2010 for a stay in October 2010

My 2 sisters and our families stayed at august Moon during the first weekend in October. We had an amazing time. The house was spectacular and the setting at the foot of the mountain was gorgeous, very private with plenty of acreage for the children to run around . We enjoyed playing soccer, frisbee, tennis and ping pong. The second day of our visit we all climbed up to Race Brook Falls and enjoyed the magnificent waterfall cascading down the rocks. We had some lovely dinners together and thoroughly enjoyed cooking in the fully equipped and tastefully done kitchen. Food shopping, historic sites, culture & play time are all within an easy drive of the house. Quick & easy journey from NYC area.

Left on 07/08/2010 for a stay in May 2003

my wife and i stayed at this lovely home for the entire summer, may through october, and we returned during the new year holiday the following winter. the setting is extremely private and sits on a gorgeous field surrounded on one side by the mountains and the other side of woods and cleared fields with an infinite skyscape, especially interesting on a starry night for heaven seekers.
the home is equally delightful with two floors of various rooms, especially the two kitchens for serious chefs and the wannabe julia. the dining room will easily seat twelve and the parlor is large enough for a decent cocktail event (there is plenty of parking space). there is a professional tennis court on the property and another building for workshop projects and an art studio upstairs. and let's not forget the sun room facing the southern horizon. and on the second floor i set-up a digital art studio because the space was an interior foyer and great for my photo monitors.
for anyone wanting the nicest location and a quiet sojourn in the berkshires, this is it. and the best part is its proximity to the art, dance and theater events in the berkshires and connecticut. plus, sheffield is a very nice town with shops and a life of its own which is only five minutes away.
