This one-and-a-half storey Dutch Colonial style house was built in 1784 for the Loyalist Joseph Bell a tanner and shoemaker who came to Shelburne in 1783 to escape the American Revolution. The Captain Bell House is recognized as a Historic Property.
The house was recently updated and restored to retain much of its original character and to update the home for comfort. The original framing, roofline, portions of the foundation and other historic elements such as the fine work around the windows and doors were preserved.
