      Exceptional vacation rental

Left on 04/15/2013 for a stay in April 2013

We were very delighted with the wonderful rental in Sintra. It was immaculate, close to the train station, and a beautiful place to stay. The owner thought of every detail to make it a lovely week. If you want the perfect place to stay in Sintra, this is it. You will not be disappointed. The rooms were well lighted and the large windows let in lots of natural light. Internet connection was perfect.

Huge house with tons of character

Left on 03/04/2013 for a stay in February 2013

I stayed here with my wife, daughter and in-laws for five nights in February. Booking the rental was very easy and Dagmar was a pleasure to correspond with via email. Her and her husband also proved to be very helpful in person and met us at the rental.
The house itself is fantastic. While we only had 5 people staying there, you could easily sleep 4 families including children. It's incredibly spacious and has everything you need in the modern kitchen, bathrooms and bedrooms, including a crib which we used for our 22 month old.
The bedrooms are all upstairs and the view from each is great, as are the many skylights. It is modern without losing the character of the place. The tile work and stained glass in the bathroom is particularly beautiful.
The location is also really good. It's just a short drive to the historical district. There's a great restaurant only a block away, and a large grocery store a short 5 minute walk. There's also free parking on the street, which was nice as we had rented a car.
The only suggestions we would have for improvement are, first, the house had a definite musty smell the first night we stayed there but this went away after a day once we had all the windows open (it had been raining for a couple of weeks prior to our stay). It might be a good idea to air the place out if it hasn't been occupied for a while before guests arrive. But, as I mentioned, this only lasted a day.
Relating also to the rain: a couple of days into the stay, ants starting coming up in the two upstairs bathrooms, especially the ensuite bathroom where myself and wife were sleeping. While they were just the small brown ants and so harmless, it was nonetheless unpleasant to have to constantly get rid of the ants which, by the end of our stay were expanding into the bedroom and a few found their way into our suitcase. Again, being an old house and having rained for weeks prior to our arrival, ants will find a way in. Also, when we mentioned the problem the owners promptly called us and let us know where the ant killer (spray) was located. So we definitely appreciated this, and the ant population dropped after I sprayed the places where they appeared to be most concentrated. It might be helpful to put some ant traps in the place when unoccupied to deter these pests in the future. I suspect both these issues are a winter problem and unlikely to happen in the other seasons.

But these were really minor issues that didn't detract from our wonderful stay. Sintra was simply fantastic, and we all loved the house.
We'd all stay there again, and would recomend it as a place to stay for anyone visiting Sintra!

      Owner

Dear Traveldude - Sorry about the ants. As you say, it can be wet in winter and they sometimes take refuge in houses. We've contacted a pest control company and hope this won't be a problem in the future. Thanks for the compliments about the house and glad you enjoyed your stay, despite the small visitors.

Lovely apt with all the amenities

Left on 10/02/2012 for a stay in September 2012

My hubby and I stayed here for 9 days with a friend in early-mid Sept. We loved it! First, the place is huge--it's 2 floors of a 3-story house. (There are stairs.) There's a big living room and a dining room in addition to the eat-in kitchen. Would be perfect for a family w/ kids or for 2 couples. It's well-appointed, including a crib and toys and a big pile of Dvds. There's a washer for clothes and a clothesline (no dryer). We were there in the dry season so clothes dried very quickly. I loved the Ikea kitchen (have one myself, only a different style). It's completely stocked w/ cookware and staples such as sugar. The downstairs bathroom has beautiful tile walls.

You get access to the backyard, which is separate from the downstairs tenant's backyard, so it's private. There's also a great little balcony off the living room, which is completely surrounded by wisteria so it's very private also. And very pretty in spring, no doubt. Nice sitting out there in the mornings.

Dagmar was very nice, and really made our stay lovely. She left a supply of basics in the fridge for us when we arrived, so we didn't have to go running out first thing to find a place to get milk for coffee. That was much appreciated. She also keeps a large collection of brochures, menus, and info about the area on a bookshelf in the dining room.

The neighborhood is residential and therefore pretty quiet. The train station (Portela) is about 10 mins walk, maybe less. Despite being so close, noise isn't a problem. We had our windows open the whole time, and though I could hear the train if I listened for it, it makes a soothing 'whoosh' instead of the jarring 'screech-clatter-clatter-squeal' that I'm used to in the us. So I really didn't notice it. (Bonus--the trains run on time.) Buses are also available a couple blocks away.

The place was very clean and well-kept. Dagmar arranged to have someone come in mid-week and clean, replace towels, etc. They even took out the clean clothes from the washer and hung them to dry. We had the option to decline if we'd wanted but saw no reason to. Nothing of ours was disturbed.

There's a small supermarket around the corner, and a farmers' market that's open I think 3 days a week, including Sat. Go early while they still have pastries! (And put said pastries in the fridge--the ants will smell them otherwise. Ants like pastries. My fault--I have this problem at home too at certain times of the year. They didn't bother us otherwise.)

Sintra is a beautiful town and Portugal a lovely country. We're already planning our next trip.

Great home in a great location

Left on 09/20/2012 for a stay in August 2012

We had a wonderful time in this home! The home in person was even better and larger than the photos indicated .The home was very well kept and very spacious which came in handy if you have kids. The extra details like the videos, books, music, wi-fi, games for children and the welcoming bottle of wine were really nice touches. It was also a great base location for exploring Sintra, Lisbon and the surrounding beaches. I can guarantee anyone staying here that they will not be disappointed!

Great neighborhood apartment , easy walk to historic sites.

Left on 04/04/2012 for a stay in March 2012

We stayed in Casa Jose Ricardo with our 3 teenagers for 4 nights. The apartment was immaculately clean and comfortably furnished. The lovely patio off of living room was surrounded by wisteria when we were there. Kitchen was very well stocked with plenty of dishes, pots, pans etc as well as spices and some cooking basics. There are numerous board games and Dvds. All beds were comfortable. There was plenty of space for all of us to spread out.
It is an easy 5 minute walk to the supermarket, local town market and a little grocery market, as wall banks, local shops and a neighborhood restaurant. It is about a 15 minute walk to the historic
district. We felt very comfortable in the neighborhood.
Dagmar met us at the apartment and explained everything. She has a great binder filled with lists of sites, places to see, restaurants, maps etc. She checked in with us by email during our stay to see if we needed anything and even helped us take care of a parking ticket. She was wonderful. I would definitely recommend the apartment and would stay there again!

      Awesome Place!

Left on 12/30/2011 for a stay in September 2011

Dagmar calls her place an apartment but really it is most of a large and very comfortable freestanding house. We are a family with teenagers and we realky loved our stay here! The home is really large, comfortably furnished with very nice baths, comfortable beds, a well stocked kitchen, and lovely outdoor areas. On top of all of this, Dagmar herself is a lovely woman and a wonderful host! Book here - you wont regret it!

We felt we were treated like valued old friends.

Left on 12/27/2011 for a stay in October 2011

From the moment we first made contact with Dagmar we felt that our comfort was her first concern and she was anxious to be helpful in every respect and undoubtedly 'went the extra mile' to ensure our stay was a memorable one. We had to arrive late in the evening due to the vagaries of our flight and our charming hostess met us at Casa Jose Ricardo to ensure we had something to eat and were comfortably settled in the delightful accomodation. She then had to drive back to Lisbon so must have got to bed very late that night!
Casa Jose Ricardo is a spacious maisonette on two floors in a lovely old Sintra house and is very well fitted out especially in the kitchen. There are 3 large double bedrooms and plenty of bathrooms. We were a party of 6 and all are agreed that we wpould love to do a return visit.
Sintra is a fascinating town and the historic old centre occupied much of our visit (5 days) but we really only scratched the surface. We also managed to fit in a couple of trips to the dramatic atlantic coast and sampled much of the amazing sea-food, local cuisine and excellent wines.
In short Portugal makes for an excellent holiday and Sintra is a perfect centre from which to get to know the locality. We could not have chosen a better base than Casa Jose Ricardo and our charming hostess.
