The Azzurra apartments are part of an an historical villa placed on a cliff that drops steeply down to the sea. The villa is located in the most ancient and elegant area of Sorrento, in the heart of the historical and tourist center.
The villa itself is an historical monument of Sorrento. It is an important piece of the landscape of Sorrento, for its elegance and beauty, and for its exceptional position on the volcanic cliff, centrally located between the tourist port and the beaches. It is not by chance that you will find the villa pictured in thousands of postcards.
While staying here, you will be living in a romantic piece of Sorrento's history.
The construction of the villa took place during the nineteenth century, a period during which rich intellectual travelers, composers and poets, traveled from the north of Europe to the south of Italy, discovering the beauty and enchantment of over two thousand years of history. As it happened, a rich German baron, Von Gunderrode, after having traveled around the whole world, chose this place as his residence.
He had several good reasons for choosing this spot, and it is for these same reasons that modern-day travelers are spellbound by this amazing villa. From the large and splendid terrace, placed directly above the sea, you will be able to admire the incomparable scenery of Sorrento and the tall cliffs that dive into the sea. A bit further in the distance, your sight will rest on the large arc of the Gulf of Naples , with the characteristic cone of Mount Vesuvius right in the middle of it. Closer by, you will be able to see other elegant historical mansions, which now are luxury hotels.
If you lean from the balustrade of the terrace, you will see the green-azure sea of Sorrento right below you, with its long, thin strips of beaches, colored by lounges and umbrellas. And there are many more things to delight your senses... the mild climate, the perfume of oranges and lemons.
The villa stands on top of ancient Roman walls, and it is a masterpiece of elegance and gracefulness, from an architectural point of view. On every level there are large terraces and tall windows, built to maximize your enjoyment of the sun, the sky and the sea of this fortunate land.
From the villa, walking along a pathway, you will be able to reach the sea and the beach facilities.
The Villa is just a few steps from the harbor of Sorrento, which can be reached along a pedestrian-only pathway. From the harbor you will be able to board the ferries and the hydrofoils that go to Capri , Ischia , Positano , Amalfi and Naples. The Circumvesuviana train station, which connects Sorrento to Pompeii and to the train station in Naples, is also a short walk from the villa, and so is the bus stop.
From Villa Azzurra you can walk to the most ancient and charming spots of Sorrento, such as the Cathedral and the Cloister of Saint Francis, the gardens, which extend themselves, terrace after terrace, towards the sea and the magnificent view of the Gulf of Naples, Procida and Mt. Vesuvius. Also, you will be able to stroll along Corso Italia, or along the charming and lively alleys of the historical center of Sorrento, to discover the many products made by local artisans. It will be an unforgettable stay.
The cleaning is performed every two days, and linen and towels are changed twice a week. Daily cleaning and room service, as well as a barbecue and a wood-fired brick oven, are available on request.

The apartment has a full kitchen, a large veranda overlooking the marina and the Bay of Naples (Vesuvius in the background), a living room with fold out bed, and a large bedroom with veranda acess. Four could stay, but it would be close quarters, despite the size of the unit. The view is outstanding from sunup to sunset. One could not ask for a better location, on the bluff overlooking the sea. It is within walking distance of the train and is one block from the main piazza. Sorrento is quite touristy, but has some economical and excellent restaurants, easily walkable from the apartment.
We took side trips to Pompeii, Paestrum, and a bus ride to Positano with a boat return. All easily done, except for the train transfer for Paestrum--source of a good travel tale.
Andrea was an excellent host. Our only problem was getting the gate open and could have used a cell phone to notify him of our arrival. We asked a shopkeeper across the street to call. He offers a boat trip to Capri which is highly recommended, especially if you like swimming. This excursion was in the top 3 of our two week stay in Italy.
We found tourists taking pictures of the villa and the veranda because of its location and beauty. Can't give a better recommendation.
