My family has a special need when renting because we have a number of children...this is easily accomodated as long as you're willing to pay bigger bucks...but Nature's Retreat provided us with a really affordable and cozy place just south of South Haven.
Positives:
- Affordable - check out the prices.
- Clean - the interior of the house and garage are kept very clean.
- Old fashioned style - the owners have done a nice job of creating old-fashioned ambience.
- Spacious yard - our children really enjoyed the large yard.
- General location - easy drive to beautiful downtown South Haven and the beaches.
- Washer/dryer - this was very convenient!
Negatives:
- Needs some TLC - the exterior paint and soffits need some attention; the bushes, shrubs and gardens were in decent shape but looked like a rotation of weeding/cultivating had been missed.
- Kitchen - a little tight, no dishwasher (that's just fine with me), but not a lot of utensils and kitchenware is a little hit-or-miss. We used paper plates and cups to cut down on the dishwashing.
- Internet access - none...had to borrow an air card from work...this really should be offered, I would have gladly paid the additional cost given the fairly low rental price.
- TV/cable package - Xfinity provided us with a basic cable package, but me and my sons would have liked to have had Fox Sports Network to watch the Tigers games, and the channel selection overall was thin. Again, I'd pay the additional cost for a better package.
- Upstairs shower - no curtain around the tub - when showering you're right in front of the window with an inadequate curtain for privacy, and without a shower curtain the water splashes on the floor and what-not, making for some additional clean-up. The tub is built into the wall so adding a curtain would be a little tricky I'm sure.
- Chairs in the Living Room - seating for 6, but no recliner - made extended sitting uncomfortable.
- A/C window units only in two of the four bedrooms -- probably should have them in all 4 bedrooms. If there's some way to add a unit for the living room, that would not be a bad idea.
- Very dark - general lack of lighting in the common areas - kitchen, dining room, living room were dark and generally lacked adequate lighting to read by. Add some more lamps with higher-wattage bulbs.
- Surrounded by 45-MPH roads...the fence is not a complete fence so you have to keep an eye on small children and keep them away from the road. There's no practical way to take small children out on a walk or bikeride from the house, as the road in front is narrow with limited sight distances and 45-MPH. Access to beach on 13th street only practical by a short drive (no big deal), and the parking is a little iffy...the 13th street beach is small but fairly nice.
Overall, I'd recommend this place, but I would recommend that the owners invest a little money in an internet connection, a better TV package, some better creature comforts and lighting (which could be accomplished while preserving the ambience) and a little TLC for the physical plant.
I'm guessing that this would still be one of the more affordable places in South Haven, and the booking calendar looked quite full for the Summer, so business looks good enough to afford some modest improvements.Response from Shores Vacation Rentals - 08/19/2012

It was an amazing place. My grandkids absolutely loved it. It has beautiful grounds to play in and the house is beautiful. If I could afford it, I'd rent it again this summer!!!
