Our stay at Fish Upon a Star was a great one. We Loved the oceanfront views and being right on the water. We love the Southern Shores area and this was perfect for our family of 5. The kitchen was well equipped for a chef and we loved the open concept of the kitchen and living room. We enjoyed nightly games of pool with the kids and crabbing on the beach with our Bulldog. I would go back in a heartbeat...
Breezy beach cottage

Stayed here for 6 days with a total of eight people, 6 adults and 2 children. Great location just about 2 miles north after entering Southern Shores. Cute, smaller home, but roomy enough for eight. Stocked with linens and towels as stated. Kitchen well stocked with various pots, pans, dishware, glassware, and utensils. However, if you plan to do any cooking, know that all knives are very dull. It was difficult to cut anything. All appliances worked well.
Loved being able to walk just a few feet from the back deck to the beach. Hot tub on the back deck was clean and offered a relaxing spot to view the stars. Pool was great with plenty of comfortable pool furniture/chairs.
The game room is huge with a nice big screen TV and pool table which we had fun with. Great room for kids/teens.
There are a few negatives that need to be mentioned. First and most importantly is the horrible spiral staircase leading from the main floor down to the game room. It's a very tight spiral, creaky and treacherous. Part of the hand railing at the top is loose. Not conducive at all to carrying laundry or anything else up or downstairs (and the washer and dryer are downstairs.) If I owned this home, I would immediately replace this with a regular set of stairs for the safety of the renters.
Very annoyingly loud creaky wood floors throughout except for the office room. (Not sure why so creaky, maybe from constant exposure to sea air.)
The game room would benefit greatly from a dehumidifier. There is a very strong musty, mildewy odor down there.
Last, the cleanliness of the home upon arrival was poor. There was lots of dust, sand, and pet hair on the floors, especially in all the corners. Dust clinging to ceiling fans. They say to let the office know if there are problems, but it's after you've unpacked and are already in you start noticing the poor cleaning job and it just seemed impractical to have them come clean after we were already settled in. I don't typically write reviews but we absolutely loved The Fish (our short name for the house)! We have 5 children. There was plenty for them to do, plenty of space and it was the most enjoyable trip we've had in a long time. The pool, hot tub and oceanfront location were fabulous. The kitchen was well stocked and very spacious. Loved the screened porch as well! The furniture was comfortable...including the pool and deck furniture. Not the cheap plastic chairs either. Nice new cushions were great! Even the dog was happy as not a lot of steep stairs for her to have to worry about. We truly had a wonderful time and hope to stay there again next year!

Loved being on ocean, hot tub, but broken stairs, fridge, traffi

We should have arrived about 4:15pm, but it took an HOUR for the LAST
SEVEN MILES. Lights could be re-programmed to favor VOLUME traffic at
peak times. After turn to left on 12, you lose a lane just before the office
causing a bottleneck. Then inch along on Ocean/Duck Road to 1st Ave.
Keeping the traffic flowing could be done by focusing on
We loved being on ocean, hot tub, sturdy beach umbrella, beach chairs,
screened porch, sunrises. Seeing the stars, Milky Way & Jupiter while in the
hot tub and hearing the ocean was priceless! The guys enjoyed the
downstairs shower. Enjoyed going to Sound beach to photograph sunsets
and going thru the woods to get to stores. We had trouble getting out of
First Ave., especially going left -- only way out.
PROBLEMS: spiral stairs are dangerous, pieces are laying on the floor and
need to be replaced; we all hated them. They are an ACCIDENT LOOKING TO
HAPPEN. They should be replaced with regular stairs to make the most of
1st fl. and for SAFETY. The main refrigerator was not working, but we had to
WAIT until Sun. for someone to AGREE it wasn't working. So we had to carry
all of our cold foods BACK down the rickety stairs to the fridge in the
garage. Hurricane Bill was RAGING too much to use the outside steps.
Sunday SS worked fast to bring an big chest of ice and finally fix the fridge!
Then we had to carry the food BACK up. Internet spotty, inconsistent, slow.
Beds in back bedroom hard; pillows need replacing. Ants got in our fudge
and ruined; Lib. door off hinges; bushes too high to see ocean; kitchen
items mixed up or missing. No eggbeater, measuring spoons, knives were
dull. Grill was dirty and there was sand on floor at arrival.
We would prefer a dune deck to the wood & bushes. Since fridge is fixed
and if steps were fixed, price right, we'd probably come back! Thinking of
Sept. or May to avoid traffic.

Great location, very nice house

Goods: House on the beach was ideal, suited a family of 6 and 2 dogs perfectly. Very nearby shopping in Duck, Kitty Hawk, and Kill Devil Hills. Outdoor deck, screened porch and hot tub were fine.
Not So Goods: Housekeeping. Upon arrival, it appeared housekeeping performed only a cursory cleaning effort. Specifically: sand on most of the hardwood flooring and countertops (not enough to see but enough to feel barefoot or to wipe a hand across, pet hair (not ours) clumped up in a few locations, dust (pretty thick) on the walls behind bedroom furniture, electric oven drip pans in need of replacement, a clogged bathroom tub drain.
Overall a good vacation spot.

A Wonderful Get-away

Have made the journey to the OBX 20+ times in the last 20+ years including 2 other stays at this location. The place was clean and comfortable. Overall had a great time and will be back again.
As the dune vegetation keeps growing the view from the house and deck are diminishing. A little dune deck would be a valued addition.
The hottub was serviced every few days and was very nice but was grossly overchlorinated. (Yes, I brought my little test kit.)
Peace and Quiet

The cottage is comfortable, with plenty of space for visitors. The kitchen is nicely outfitted with plenty of glasses, cups, and plates, as well as pots and pans (though they could be updated). The large lower-level is great for play, with a pool table and TV. The library has plenty of books, puzzles, and games, and is a nice place to hide-away.
The location is ideal for anyone enjoying both the Northern and Southern shopping experience, yet far enough away from any commercial buildings to be able to enjoy the quiet. We're off-season visitors (November), but have experienced 80+ degree weather more often than cold.
Lovely home, perfect for the two of us.

We had a great time. We usually rent during the last week of September through the first week in October. Due to family events, we rented later in October. The weather, though sunny most days, was cold, 10 degrees colder than normal. Having the hot tub, in a perfect location, for just wonderful. We could see the ocean, be in the sun. We used it at least once a day, sometimes, two times a day. And at night!
The house is smaller than most that are being built, but it was perfect for us. It is very nice to have some houses on the ocean front that are not so large and expensive. We really apreciated the den with a great desk. Like most people, we are still attached to the office while on vacation, and having a room set up to do work in was wonderful. In fact, the house as very nicely decorated.
Would rent again

This property was easy to find and had everything we wanted. The kitchen was well equipped with all that we needed. The views were terrific and we were right on the beach. The bedrooms were small but who needs a big bedroom when you don't spend much time there.
We had 4 teenagers with us and they all had a great time. They spent a good part of their evenings playing pool which is located in the basement so they didn't disturb the rest of us.
