The Southern Shores staff are wonderful to work with, we have been renting from them for years. The house fit all our needs perfectly, the location was great we could walk to Duck every morning for donuts.

My wife and our daughter stayed at Journey's End with another couple and their daughter. The house from the outside isn't quite as impressive as it's overbuilt neighbors, but the inside is where you stay and it was very nice. Excellent great room, large spacious kitchen, and all the amenities you need to feel at home and relaxed while you enjoy the spectacular ocean view. This was our 2nd time staying in the OBX, and our first ocean front property. Yes, it's more expensive, but nothing beats a clear, unobstructed 180 degree view of the ocean. We loved the easy access to the beach (private walkway) and the hot tub on the covered deck facing the water. The beds were comfortable, and despite having to chase two infants (one 11 months the other near 10) we got a much needed chance to relax. Obviously, no rental property is going to be baby proofed, and if you have small kids I would recommend assessing possible dangers and trying to mitigate them which we did (for example, putting cushions around the sharp brick corners of the fireplace). During our stay we had a couple of minor issues, but Southern Shores maintenance team responded quickly and corrected everything without much delay. Their service is excellent which allows you to focus on enjoying your stay instead of being frustrated that something in your property needs attention. The location was great in our view, and we took full advantage of local restaurants and attractions. The a/C worked well (maybe too well, it often got a bit chilly!) but that's easier to correct than units that don't cool off quickly. Overall I have no real complaints about this property, only a few nits, not even worth mentioning. If you can't enjoy your time here then I doubt you would enjoy it anywhere else. If I had to pick 1 minor thing that could have been better, I would say the 2nd master bedroom could only be accessed through an outside walkway (not a problem really unless raining) but this didn't cause issues for us.

We had an amazing time at Journey's End. The house is much closer to the ocean than the pictures suggest -- that walkway from the deck to the dune deck is much shorter than it appears. We spent most of our time outside, even in March -- the covered decking allowed us to enjoy even the two rainy/cloudy days in the fresh air. We saw lots of dolphins, some VERY close to shore. And we saw a whale! Yes, on our second-to-last day we spotted him, much larger than a dolphin, jet black, with a large flat tale and a waterspout. We were thrilled. This is the perfect house to fly a kite (we had tons of fun just walking on the beach with our kite high above us).
The house itself is comfortable and very personal -- it feels like a real home, which is a nice change from some of the generic homes we've visited. There are tons of great books to read (a whole library!) and lots of family pictures to give the home character.
The only negative, really, was the upstairs bedroom/suite, which was sort of inconvenient (especially on windy or rainy nights -- no one really wanted to go outside and climb the deck stairs to get up there). But the downstairs bedrooms were great -- terrific beds in both the masters (most comfortable vacation beds we've encountered).
Overall, we had a blast! We will try to come again next spring -- something to really look forward to.

We come to fish for 2 weeks and really need the extra freezer compartment of a 2nd fridge, plus a place to store the day's catch until time to clean and also bait storage. With no extra fridge and the ice machine not working, we spent a fortune on ice. We play a lot of pingpong at home and missed access to the table. The house is comfortable and the beach access is great, but it's not exactly perfect for our needs so we'll keep looking. The folks at So. Shores Realty have been wonderful to work with!

Loved the house, and it was closer to the beach than it appears in the photos. Will definitely stay again. Some of the appliances at the wet bar were not working properly and i notified property management. it was also difficult to regulate the AC uniformly throughout the house (MB was freezing)...but i'm not complaining...just thought it should be mentioned!

My wife is a veterinarian and I am retired. She needs to "get away" and have time to unwind. This was our second trip to Journey's End and it is not our last! Is is a place where we can relax and enjoy ourselves. Located not far from everthing but far enough to be peaceful.
We were there at the end of the season and the guests that had been there prior to us this year did not treat the property as best they could. It suffered a bit from wear and tear - but, it was the end of the season. I am sure that all will be ready come the first of spring.
We especially enjoy the porch on the ocean side and spend a lot of time reading, drinking coffee, etc., my wife enjoying her novels and me enjoying my technical books. After many years with a major railroad, I retired and am learning the art of web design. Having access to the internet gives me a way to test out things that I am learning.
We will be back as soon as we can find a week where we can get away and the property is available. We love September and later as the pace is slower and we can just "chill".

We have stayed at Southern Shores for more than 25 years of vacations. This was our first time a Journey's End. The six of us were very pleased with our accommadations, even better than pictured. We had called maintenance a couple of times and they responded quickly and efficently.
Our week there was a very plesant experience even with the high winds and rain. We will rent this property again when there are just the six of us.
During our rental, we experienced several issues. We had ants in the kitchen, but the owner called an exterminator to resolve the issue within hours. We also had a bed that was broken and not usable during our stay. The view was great, the home was fine....it just is an older home that may need remodeling in the next few years. Overall, we made due and had an excellent vacation and the home owner was very pleasant and tried to resolve the issue quickly. He provided us with a gift card to a local market that we used to buy dinner one night. This review is meant to set expectation of the home and provide feedback on our experience....not a bad home for the price. We moved to a different rental home for 2008 and we loved it.

I'm going to move in soon :)
Seriously though, this is a wonderful vacation house with very close proximity to the ocean, a nice hot tub, fireplace, and an extremely well equipped kitchen. Rent is a little pricey, but aren't they all? Definitely recommended!
