Loving Life
Richmond, VAPleasantly Surprised
Left on 09/26/2009 for a stay in September 2009
I've been staying in cottages on the outer banks since I was a teen in the
early 1970s. Most are comfortable but not many are charming. The
Moynihan is cared for by people who obviously love to linger and lounge
while enjoying the smell and sounds of the great Atlantic. A well stocked
kitchen, large island and open and welcoming living/dining floor plan WITH
a wood burning fireplace was more than I expected.
And how trusting the owners are to leave their CD collection out for their
guests. I LOVED the Frank Sinatra collection - thank you! Your vintage KLH
stereo speakers still rock! And had we known there was a turntable we
would have brought our favorite albums - too cool.
What a treat to sit on the screened porch, ice cold martini in hand, with the
sliding doors wide open listening to a GOOD sound system while the wind
tossed pine shrubs and dune top plants. I saw toads, lizards, a gorgeous
grasshopper and many butterflies flitting all in one afternoon while reading
a book on the lovely porch furniture (with cushions supplied for heaven's
sake!) All experienced from the wonderful ocean front deck nestled in a
dune.
Lastly, the beds were actually comfortable, the bathrooms were lovely -
usually where most cottages look worn and faded. And how about that wrap
around porch with a door into the first floor bathroom? Sounds odd but
then you realize a wet ocean bather can slip directly into the shower from
OUTSIDE -- not that I didn't enjoy the hot and cold shower under the house
WITH A MIRROR? Now that was a pleasant surprise as were all of the above. -

New Yorknice place- even when it rains for days
Left on 09/16/2009 for a stay in September 2009
I really liked the design of the house. It was great being right on the ocean. It rained for days and we were all holed up inside, but it didn't feel claustrophobic. The roof leaks though- that should probably be looked into.

Columbusold house in need of a lot of repair
Left on 08/13/2009 for a stay in July 2009
The location is great but the house is in need of repair. The screens on the porch are full of holes and the two doors do not close. The kitchen was well equipped but was not very clean. The air conditioning was fine but the upstairs unit was dirty and had moldy spores. The living room would benefit from better light bulbs - we like to do puzzles and it was difficult to see. There was sand on the floor in both downstairs bedrooms when we got there. An outside shower would also have been nice.

Arlington, VANice old charm, but in need of updates and fixes
Left on 07/29/2009 for a stay in July 2009
Upon arrival we noticed water leaking from a pipe under the house. A
plumber arrived 2 days later to fix the burst pipe. He said the job was
completed, but a plumber also showed up 2 days after that at 9 AM and
pounded on pipes below the kitchen for an hour. Another plumber arrived
a day later to replace the upstairs toilet, which had not been flushing
properly. Terminix came twice during the week - once to spray and once to
inspect. The air conditioning for the downstairs stopped working on the
4th or 5th day. A Southern Shores rep came out twice to look at the toilet
and to check the AC. AC was never fixed. The back screen doors are all
ripped and several of the bedroom walls are stained and dirty.
If we hadn't had family staying next door where we could retreat, the
plumbing and other interruptions would have been even more annoying.
Despite these problems, the house does have adequate space, a good
location and a nice old-time beach charm. We also appreciated the wireless
access, but would have more appreciated our own catwalk to the beach. -

Northern VAWonderful...except
Left on 01/08/2009 for a stay in October 2007
The home is nicely located on the oceanfront. The kitchen/dining layout is great! Nice open area keeps everyone connected during mealtimes. The decking was very nice and in good condition. The only blemish on this property was the condition of the bathrooms.
There were signs of water damage and age. We got the rental at the last minute for a quick time together after my spouse had done some extensive traveling...given more time to choose, I'm not sure this rental would be in the running with the low aged bathrooms.
