Warren, NJIn one word---delightful!
Left on 08/26/2009 for a stay in August 2009
We chose Shearwater's Nest because we were joining friends staying in other homes in Southern Shores and needed a house that did not involve a lot of steps. Shearwater's Nest looked very comfortable and attractive on the Southern Shores Realty website. The reservation process was easy and friendly. Expecting a nice house, upon arrival our expectations were surpassed. Shearwater's Nest is open, spacious, beautifully decorated, and well equipped. The beds were made. The pool was a real plus. We were lucky to have superb weather. We had a great vacation in large measure because we chose this house.

Pittsburgh, PAHome away from home
Left on 08/05/2009 for a stay in July 2009
We've stayed in a lot of beach houses in Southern Shores / Duck, etc. and this one was one of the nicest. It is extremely clean and well maintained. The amenities there (kitchen, electronics, etc.) were high quality and made it feel like being at home at the beach. The location is the only downside - it is a good haul to the beach & if you have kids and chairs, and umbrellas and....you have to drive up to the Hillcrest Ave. beach access parking lot (which you will have a pass for, so it's not a huge deal). The backyard is great - it's really secluded & private. The pool and hot tub are very nice as well. There is a lot of wildlife in the backyard & that is something to be aware of, especially if you have kids. There are several foxes that like to hang out beyond the fence line and wait for food. We did not give them anything and they mostly just stayed in the woods..but clearly people feed them (read the guest book) and that keeps them coming back for more...so just FYI. All-in-all this is a great place, we really enjoyed our vacation there & we would definitely rent it again!

The Adams'Family
Herndon, VAOur stay was excellent in a lovely home.
Left on 07/31/2009 for a stay in July 2009
This home is truly a five star experience. I gave it only a four star due to difficulties with the pool heater. My son and I love a warmish pool in which to swim and relax. For the first time since we started going to OBX (about 6 years) in various houses, we decided to spend the extra $300. The first few days the pool was very cool and not heated. After phoning for maintenance, the heater began working but the water temp went to 90 degrees and we couldn't swim as it was hot! Then we were told to turn the pool heater off and on by using the circuit breaker in the garage. None of these things was earth shattering, but $300 is a high price to pay for losing swimming days in the pool and then having to run in and out of the garage to mess with the circuit breaker. Other then that the house was lovely and everyone at Southern Shores Realty was very nice. We hope to return to this house next year and hopefully for two weeks next year.
Thanks. -

New Oxford, Pa.Very nice, quiet house with easy access to beach
Left on 07/22/2009 for a stay in July 2009
This is a very comfortable beach house that is very accessable to the beach. The house itself is well kept and all one floor. We found it a nice home away from home with all the conveniences. We loved the big screen TV and surround sound (movie theater quality) but needed better directions for use. The daily visits by the local wildlife kept it interesting but I wouldn't recommend any close encounters if you have small children. The best thing about this rental is location far enough out of Duck for the traffic but centrally located to the boat launch and all other stores. We just loaded the nice beach wagon each day and took a short walk to the beach. We will rent this house again. The only recommendation would be to get an ice maker or replace the one that doesn't work in the kitchen refrigerator.

We absoultely LOVED staying in this home- it was perfect! Tons of space, tons of privacy in the backyard with the pool and hot tub, and amazing master suite with a jacuzzi tub were awesome! We definitely plan on renting this home again and can't wait to get back to OBX!

Left on 01/27/2009 for a stay in July 2006
This was a great house for my family since we had a young toddler at the time--no steps! The house was beautifully done inside, and the privacy of the pool area was welcomed. We also really enjoyed the proximity to the walking/biking trails around Southern Shores. We will definitely rent this home again. We vacation in the Outer Banks every year, and this home was one of our favorites because it is such a comfortable home. A really wonderful home!

Baltimore, MDHome, away from home!
Left on 01/27/2009 for a stay in June 2008
What a lovely home. It has all the amentities that you will need and we felt right at home as soon as we walked in the front door.
This home is convenient to the ocean and is just a couple of blocks from the beach.
We were one of two familes that were there that week and we all had sufficient room and a places of solitude if it was necessary.
The day room off the porch is very comfortable and the pool is heated (option)and quite comfortable. Our grandchildren didn't want to get out of the pool.
The home is close to Duck, NC and shopping.
All things considered, a beautiful place for 1-2 families to spend some time together and enjoy the Outer Banks of NC. -

Roanoke, VAWonderful Home, felt like a mountain getaway at the beach!
Left on 01/22/2009 for a stay in June 2008
This was our second stay at the Outer Banks, but our first stay at Shearwater's Nest. We loved the house! We were very comfortable. This home is very private though it is located off the main road. We used the pool, the hot tub and the BBQ just about every day. We saw a deer walk by one day while we were out by the pool, and there is a family of foxes that visited us every day as well. There is only a short drive to a parking area for beach access. The beaches at the Outer Banks are truly amazing, there is so much wildlife: crabs, terns, pelicans, dolphins, you won't believe the sights you will see.
Try to avoid the typical touristy restaurants, they are overpriced and the quality is not great. Check online for recommendations from locals instead.
I would love to come back to Shearwater's Nest year after year. -

Hagerstown, MDNice Wildlife Viewing
Left on 01/22/2009 for a stay in October 2008
While I enjoyed the house, I have the following comments.
The driveway entrance brush needs to be trimmed back significantly to allow visual access to on-coming traffic in both directions. As it is now, it is very, very dangerous!
The refrigerator/freezer stunk of crabs. We replaced the Arm and Hammer deorderizer ourselves, however, the refrig should have been steam cleaned with clorex prior to our arrival!
There are no instructions for the living room tv and dvd. Neither I, nor the rental agent, could get it working!
The pool filter system broke down having repair men oome in and out.
The dining room door to the rear porch would not lock.
The grass was not cut, although, it was cut while we were there.
Backyard trash, beyond the pool, should be cleaned out.
Other than the above, I/we enjoyed the periodic visit from the local foxes. That was the best part of the house.

Munich GermanyWonderfully calm and cosy
Left on 01/22/2009 for a stay in September 2008
We (three friends from Germany) wanted just some calm timeout and had stayed at several other places at OBX previously. Shearwaters Nest was just perfect for this purpose. And it was one of the nicest and best supplied houses we have seen.
The pool and hot tub at the back of the house are great and cannot be seen from any neighboring property.
The kitchen is well supplied, we did a lot of cooking.
We can for sure recommend Shearwaters Nest. You see, that the owners love the place.

Beautiful home. Walking distance to the beach or stay home for a dip in the pool or hot tub. All the comforts of home. We loved it so much we booked the same house for this year. Highly recommend to families!
