Situated in a quiet lane, in an enviable position, just minutes walk to Pollensa’s historic main square, behind a quiet, unassuming exterior, lays the most incredible hidden treasure. This amazing, elegant mansion, a preserved piece of local history which dates back centuries, of exceptional quality and understated splendour, gives an insight into authentic, Mallorcan legacy. Cuatro Cantons is a large dose of sophisticated extravagance, a peaceful oasis in sumptuous surroundings, just perfect for a relaxing holiday with everything close by. This is a magnificent property reminiscent of an Italian Renaissance Palace.
This villa is the... real Pollensa.
Cuatro Cantons, in Mallorcan meaning “the four corners”, due to its location on a narrow crossing, would have belonged to a wealthy, noble family. This immense house of 800 sq metres is in grounds of 1,200 sq metres. The flagstone entrance has a beautiful aged Mallorcan wooden door leading into a vast entrance hall with high ceilings and a majestic archway, reminiscent of a stately home, with gorgeous ceramic floors and thick stone walls.
The interior has cherished, classic furniture with an abundance of artifacts, all inherited, simplistic heirlooms of distinction. Vibrant, colourful artwork fills every room, with original works by distinguished artist Joan Bennassar and even a lithograph of Joan Miró.
Lots of attention to detail creates a beautiful and characteristic family home, full of interesting features, illustrating the care lavished on the house over the years by the current owners.
There are various doors leading off from the main hall, some of them locked as they lead to parts of the house still yet to be refurbished. There is a magnificent marble staircase on the right with ornate wrought-iron bannister leading up to the second level and just below the staircase is a wc bathroom with pretty green ceramic wall sink, brass taps and decorative tiling.
Double doors from the hall lead into a day lounge that has two sofas with a small round coffee table. There is an open fire grate on the left with wood wall panelling and lovely bright paintings. The walls are painted a pale green and it has a high decorative ceiling with gilt edging and a rose centre from where hangs a chandelier light. There is a round dining table and a small square card table in the corner. Beautiful draped curtains frame the full-height windows that fill this room with lovely natural sunlight and the superb views from this lounge are of the stunning pool and gardens.
The kitchen is through a door on the left of the lounge. It has rich tiled floors and is fitted with granite work surfaces and attractive glass wall units decorated with a cherry design. There is a pine breakfast table and full modern cooking facilities including a dishwasher, a large American-style fridge freezer, microwave and fitted oven.
The sweeping staircase is home to an enormous eye-catching Bennassar painting on the facing wall and has an unusual hanging solid-silver chandelier light.
The second level is where all of the bedrooms are and is a maze of rooms and living space.
On the left of the stairs is a carpeted hallway leading to two, large, carpeted twin bedrooms. Both overlook the narrow Joan Giraud lane and have narrow balconies and gorgeous cream linen curtains with hand embroidery at the bottom. One of the bedrooms has a large dressing area, the other is without a wardrobe.
In this “wing” is also a large separate full bathroom that has amber tiling with double basin and a large bath with overhead shower.
A door directly in front of the main stairs leads into an upper lounge that has striking black and white floor tiles and an large glass cabinet with an extraordinary, hand-crafted schooner ship, made by the owners grandfather., as well as other vessels all intricately designed. There is a sofa here and comfortable seating and a small balcony looks over the narrow lane. A door from this lounge links directly to one of the twin bedrooms in the 1st wing.
Also from this central lounge is a door through into a second sleeping area – Wing 2
A door from the lounge leads directly into a carpeted twin bedroom, again, overlooking the lane with a small balcony. This bedroom has distinctive bamboo headboards and a round dressing table. A door from this bedroom leads into a hallway and to a further twin bedroom that has large wardrobes and in the hallway is a large separate full bathroom with overhead shower.
From the upper lounge with black and white tiled floors is a door on the right into a further lounge which forms part of the main suite. This carpeted lounge has opulent furnishings with a large gilt mirror over a firegrate, damask-upholstered sofa and chairs and even a piano. Double doors look onto the cobbled patio below next to the garden.
A doorway from this lounge leads into a hallway lined with wardrobes, to use as a private dressing area. This is ensuite to the main carpeted double bedroom and ensuite full bathroom.
Doors from the main bedroom here give access to a large covered corner terrace overlooking the peaceful exotic garden and pool below with far-reaching, breathtaking views of the Tramuntana Mountains. It really is hard to believe that you are in the middle of the village when you look out from here. The only sound is birdsong coming from the little birds in the aviary below that the owner breeds.
The advantage of these three separate sleeping areas means that it is ideal for three families all travelling together but wanting their own space within the same villa. All three sleeping areas are linked together to doors from the black and white tiled central lounge.
The tranquil garden and pool are like an oasis, full of tall palms and tropical banana plants, mandarin, orange and lemon trees, even a rope swing. Beautiful Mediterranean green ferns and foliage give shade over an enchanting cobbled terrace with a centre well. There is a long covered terrace running along one side with large ceramic flower pots, reminiscent of a cloistered enclosure, overlooking the rectangular pool which is surrounded by lovely lawn and a large sunbathing patio. The garden is overlooked by surrounding properties but not directly.
The pool has roman steps in one corner and two sets of metal steps - there is also a pool side shower here.
At the bottom of this “secret garden” next to the pool is a covered seating area with a large table and bench seating next to a wood-burning oven and barbeque. The laundry room with washing machine is also to one side.
Next to the wood burning oven is a door leading into a separate casita, hidden away in the corner and is a real surprise. It has delightful sloping rafters and small-paned cottage windows, comfy colourful rocking chairs, a large dining table and a wood-burning stove.
An arch leads into a small completely fitted second kitchen complete with fridge freezer, oven, dishwasher and a large gas hob. This is a lovely area from where to spend lazy days by the pool, away from the main house.
This is a magnificent property reminiscent of an Italian Renaissance Palace, and in one of the most magnificent of locations on The Mediterranean.
