Description from the owner

Penthouse in a small apartment block with panaoramic sea view. Across a small sandy lane is the beach which is only used by a few locals and by the turtles in summer when they lay their eggs and the previous year's eggs hatch out.

The property is very quiet but is on the edge of historic Speightstown, known as Little Bristol. Speighstown was so importnat in the 17th and 18th centuries that three major forts were built to protect it from any enemy ships. At present Speightstown is the place 'to lime', which means 'to relax and have fun'. The Wicket by the beach sleeps 5 (two bedrooms, and a study/den with a futon and three b...Read more

A Perfect Place To Relax In Barbados

Left on 12/09/2012 for a stay in November 2012

This property has been very accurately reviewed previously but here is our take nonetheless…
After a long day traveling from Detroit via Toronto with our eleven month old son, we arrived at the Wicket and were greeted by Welda the cleaner who gave us a brief tour. We found everything to be perfect, just as described. Not only did we have all mod cons but the owners Jim and Olga had very kindly arranged for groceries and some other bonus goodies.
Unfortunately our little guy had developed a fever just as we were leaving. This cramped our style for a few days but during this time we were thankful to have a simple itinerary and such a comfortable space to relax in. Jim and Olga had organized a crib and a high chair so the patient was well provided for.
Jim shared detailed information in advance regarding the property, restaurants and activities etc. This was augmented by thoughtful emails from Olga during the week with additional suggestions for things to do.
We had a fantastic time in Barbados. We had fun visiting the Wildlife Reserve by public bus even though the Green Monkeys didn't show up at feeding time. I guess it must have been their day off! We didn’t bother renting a car so most of our time was spent around Speightstown and Heywards Beach where we enjoyed some beautiful sunsets. Favorite dining spots were Wave Rider, La Bouche (Austin and his wife are lovely people), Bo's Place (just opened). The Fisherman's Pub was good value for some 'stick to your ribs' fare. We also picked up some Red Snapper at the Speightstown fish market and cooked it on the electric grill on the balcony.
The cost of food and other goods is a little expensive in Barbados, compared to the us so it was nice to have the gourmet kitchen at the Wicket to rustle up a few home cooked meals in between dining out. There were some interesting ingredients to be had at the local supermarkets (Eddie’s and Jordans) including yams, plantains and the starchy breadfruit. On Olga’s recommendation we bought some great papaya from the old lady in the bonnet who has a stall in the side street opposite the church.
When we got to the airport our return flight was cancelled due to a mechanical problem so we were all herded to the Barbados Beach Club in Oistins. So we got a bonus day on the island, even if most of that was spent in a series of queues. The BBC wasn't bad but I'm glad we opted for the Wicket rather than this type of resort with mass produced food and sketchy poolside entertainment!
If you're looking for the resort treatment forget it, you'll be disappointed by Speightstown in general. It is slightly scruffy but charming provincial town with a smattering of tourists but mostly locals going about their lives. We are quite seasoned travelers of principle that the world is too big / life is too short for backtracking, yet the Wicket begs a return visit. Hopefully we will have a chance one day.
It doesn’t get much better than spending Caribbean evenings on the balcony with a rum cocktail, looking out through the coconut palms and listening to the waves roll gently onto the little beach immediately below. If you look around the Wicket I think you will understand that the attention to detail and personal touches are down to people who appreciate the good life and understand the important stuff. If that makes sense book it now - you will remember this special place...

      Beautiful Barbados

Left on 07/03/2012 for a stay in June 2012

My wife and I stayed at the Wicket for 2 weeks in late May/early June and had a great time.

The property is very well-equipped and beautifully laid out with a large, high-ceilinged living area, which gives it a light and airy feel.
The balcony has a superb view of the sea directly opposite, framed by two palm trees- almost like something from a postcard!

The bedrooms are large and light, with huge double beds and ensuite bathrooms.

The appartment is located in Speightstown which is has a gentle pace and friendly atmosphere. The beaches are great for those who prefer a calmer waters as opposed to surf, and there are several good areas to snorkel nearby.

Being a small island, it's easy to get around and explore, although there are plenty of places to eat and drink in Speightstown if you want to stay close by.

By the end of our stay we were already making plans to come back- it's such a laid-back and friendly place, and the fact that it's a laid-back and friendly place that also has white sandy beaches, turquoise seas and turtles to swim with makes it even better!

      Dream flat and location!

Left on 05/25/2012 for a stay in February 2012

I have just celebrated my 50+ birthday in the most beautiful place in the world - Barbados.
I love to swim in a sea - and I found there the amazing combination of sea water quality (crystal clear, calm, warm).
I prefer a quiet environment - and the Wicket apartment is ideal for this purpose. It is secure, calm, spacious yet homely. Its well equipped with air conditioners, fans, dishwasher and washing machine, a grill (which can be used on the balcony), a very sophisticated oven and 2 different kinds of hobs. Being able to buy freshly caught fish and cook it the same day on the large balcony while watching the sunset is a perfect way to spend the evenings.
Turn right out of the Wicket and walk for 10 minutes : there is the best beach I have ever seen. It is surrounded by the coral reefs, so even when everywhere else there are big waves, on this beach the water is always rather calm. Even at peak times when other beaches are quite busy there are very few people on this beach and the surroundings are really beautiful.
If you turn left out of the Wicket and walk for 5 minutes there are the Speightstown museum and the wonderful Caribbean art gallery. Also close by there are two supermarkets and a fish market. From the wide range of restaurants in Speightstown and Holetown I liked most the Ju-Jus, Waver Rider and Mango.
I really have fallen in love with the Barbados and especially the Wicket, so I aime to spend another 3 weeks there next year.

      Peaceful Holiday at The Wicket

Left on 04/14/2012 for a stay in March 2012

My husband and I spent a week at The Wicket in March. This was our first time renting privately for a holiday and we could not have been more pleased. When we arrived the housekeeper was there to meet us and get us settled. The apartment was just as described, very spacious, clean and the kitchen was very modern and well equipped. Our favorite spot was the deck. We would sit and have our morning coffee or evening drinks just enjoying the beautiful view. The beach in front of the building was good for swimming and if you ventured out a little further snorkelling. We did not rent a car and managed to visit Basheba, Holetown and Bridgetown using the local bus system. The bus terminal was just around the corner, 5 min away. There were two grocery stores, a bakery and a boardwalk with a few restaurants right in Speightstown, again just a short walk from The Wicket. At one local restaurant my husband commented on how he loved the dipping sauce for the fish cakes. The next day as we were walking by they called us in and gave us a small container of their secret sauce and said it was a gift for us to take home to Canada. Needless to say we felt welcome and safe in Speightstown.

      Awesome view; Spacious; Great location

Left on 02/17/2012 for a stay in January 2012

Our family of five (2 adults, 3 children 9, 12, 13) stayed at The Wicket during the Christmas holidays and loved every minute of it! We especially enjoyed relaxing and eating on the balcony, savouring the beautiful view of the ocean. We cooked many meals in the modern, spacious kitchen, as there were grocery stores, a bakery and fruit/veggie street vendors within walking distance. We ate the rest of our meals at many of the wonderful restaurants also within walking distance (Cassareep, Orange Street Grocer, Mango's). Another great thing about this apartment is its closeness to the abundance of superb beaches, including the one right in front of it, for relaxing, swimming and snorkeling. The apartment was very spacious for a family of our size (3 bathrooms, large bedrooms and living area). The children were especially pleased that there was wifi for their electronics and a television for the evenings. We rented a car for part of our stay to explore the island, but one isn't necessary, as Speightstown had everything we needed. We enjoyed walking around town, day and night, mixing with the locals and other tourists. We can't wait to go back to Barbados and stay at The Wicket!

Amazing , spacious, tranquil, well located apartment

Left on 02/01/2012 for a stay in December 2011

My sister and I chose this apartment randomly from an overseas rentals website. What appealed to us was the modern decor, high ceilings and space, and very good sized balcony over looking the sea. We were not disappointed. The apartment is beautifully kept and with three bathrooms to choose from!. We were met with a huge simile on arrival by Welda the housekeeper. Welda showed us all around tand left her number with us should we need anything at all.
If you want to sample the real Caribbean then Speightstown is the place to stay. A truly authentic little town that has hardly been touched by tourism and where you can blend in with the locals and really feel you are experiencing the true culture of Barbados.
We were only ten minutes walk from the beautiful Port St Charles beach where we would often spend the day, dipping in and out of the amazing clear blue waters there. As the bus station was only a couple of minutes away, we would also regularly jump on one of the buses down the westcoast a little (never having to wait more than a couple of minutes for a bus) and jump off ten minutes away at the Ramshackle bar and restaurant next to the Lonestar hotel where we would take a sunbed for the day and enjoy the marvellous beach, the great lunchtime treats at Ramshackle and at JuJus bar next door. I will definitely be booking tthe wicket again on my next trip to Barbados, it was a beautiful place to come back to after a full day out and about on the island.

A (great) room with a (fantastic) view

Left on 10/02/2011 for a stay in September 2011

I’ve just had the great good fortune to spend a couple of weeks in this lovely, comfortable apartment. It’s quiet, with fabulous views from a large balcony due west over the sea rewarding us with a beautiful sunset each evening. The flat is very well equipped – the kitchen has everything we needed to be fully self sufficient, as we chose to largely cater for ourselves – and there is good wifi internet connection, as well as a large TV, music players and cable service. My bed was comfortable and the hot water system was reliable. Although there is a road directly outside the building, very little traffic uses it and I was never aware of any noise. It is possible to swim off the beach directly in front of the building, or walk 10 minutes along the coast to a large clear sea pool area protected from debris by a net.

Speightstown is a charming, slightly scruffy small town with all the amenities we needed, including post office, a couple of banks with atms, pharmacies and two supermarkets, as well as fruit and vegetable stalls in the street, with helpful vendors ready to tell you if this avocado, or that papaya, is ready for today, or if you should keep it until tomorrow. In the ‘off season’ of September, while a number of bars were evidently closed, there were still bars, cafes and restaurants to provide alternative entertainment venues. It is, however, not a party town; for that I think you need to go further south.

We managed without a car as it is a five minute walk from the apartment into the shopping area of Speightstown, and there are regular buses from the town bus station to connect with other parts of the island. It was a ride of about 45 minutes into Bridgetown, but the livelier Holetown was under 20 minutes.

There was nothing more relaxing than starting the day eating ripe papaya on the balcony listening to the lap of the waves against the sand, and ending it, in the same seat, watching the sun go down on the horizon, a rum royale to hand.

      Perfect Vacation

Left on 06/06/2011 for a stay in May 2011

We just returned from a week's stay at The Wicket.
      It was a wonderful experience.

The penthouse apartment on two levels is very private, quiet and spacious. We really liked the open, loft like layout with adjoining landscaped terrace overlooking the sea and a small white sand beach. The property is well furnished, including a modern, fully equipped kitchen.

The beach right across the street is rarely used, the waters of the Caribbean crystal clear and inviting.

Also really enjoyed the proximity to charming, funky Speightstown. This is country town, not a glittering tourist destination but offering a variety of casual restaurants, a bakery and supermarket, plus various farm stands where locals sell fruit and produce.

All in all, I would highly recommend a visit.

We spent most of our time on the great balcony or in the water across the street. Very nice accomodations in a great location. Speightstown is a great little, quiet town. We had the good fortune to spend a fortnight's holiday in this wonderful penthouse apartment, located in Speightstown, beautiful Barbados. The apartment is luxurious in presentation and location. The living area is light, airy and spacious with vaulted ceiling and large balcony with magnificent views across the ocean. It becomes addictive to lounge on the balcony and watch the sun set between the two palm trees on the small beach directly in front of the apartment.

Speightstown is an ideal location from which to explore the island or simply enjoy local beaches, restaurants, bars and coffee shops.Local people are incredibly friendly; my adult old son would join them in the little cafe for a morning coffee, laugh and chat.He soon relaxed into the laid back lifestyle;more therapeutic than any medicine! We were always greeted with a friendly smile by staff in the little bakery, minutes walk from the apartment and also by the owner and regulars at Fisherman's Pub, which, with its patched roof and Caribbean music,is definitely worth a visit.Going out day or night felt very safe in Speightstown

I recommend a visit to the Speightstown Museum which provides comprehensive interactive history of Barbados. We had great fun using the local bus. From the terminal, located minutes walk from the apartment you can get a bus to almost any location. The fare is approximately 50p per single journey, however far you travel,
Hire a car to explore inland and the western side of the island. See"share a tip?for additional information.
We loved Barbados, the weather, the beaches, the crystal clear seas and the food but most of all we loved the Bajan people, their generous natures, their friendliness and their capacity for fun.To enjoy the luxury of the penthouse apartment with its wonderful views;definitely a bonus.

      Beautiful apartment - Perfect location

Left on 05/14/2010 for a stay in July 2009

      1. The apartment

The apartment is conveniently located in the center of Speightstown,
literally meters away from the beach. It is spacious, beautifully decorated
and very well equipped (fully equipped kitchen, washing machine, dryer, TV,
DVD player, wi-fi). A private parking is also available. The real asset of the
house is, in my view, its beautiful terrace overlooking the sea: it allows to
take full advantage of the beauty of the Caribbean while comfortably sitting
at the table, having breakfast, lunch dinner or sipping a cocktail.

      2. Location

Speighstown is a quiet, nice, little town on the West coast of Barbados. It
allows visitors to enjoy the authentic laid-back Bejan atmosphere, yet
offering all services one may need, including shops, restaurants and a small
but efficient medical centre. The Fisherman's pub is at walking distance and
is a well known attraction in the island for its limbo contest and it rhum
punches. The beaches are white and sandy and well exposed to the sun and
the breezes. The closest one is about 50 seconds away from the apartment,
on a comfortable pair of flip-flops.

      3. Connections

Renting a car is recommended, as it allows short excursions to all the
various spots in the island. Yet, public transport services are frequent and
      efficient.

      4. I'd recommend the Wicket to families looking for relaxation and a simple
but luxurious Caribbean holiday and to anyone willing to explore the
treasures of Barbados: sun, sea, tasty food and a friendly atmosphere.

      Amazing Luxury !

Left on 04/01/2010 for a stay in October 2009

My wife and four year old son stayed in this apartment last year and had a wonderful week.
The apartment blew us away, it has all mod cons you could want for even WIFI. The balcony view is to die for, we eat out there many times this place just forces you to relax.
We hired a car and travelled around to find many lovely sights including the flower cave, crane beach, East coast Basheba and the Scottish district (amazing views) and many lovely restaurants.
Port ST Charles beach, which is a short walk away, is divine and very safe for children.
The local town (Speighstown) has all you need the locals were very freindly, we often had a wonder down to the town and had coffee in the small cafe on the beach just past the fisherman’s Pub, great muffins and smoothes! Can highly recommend the local restaurant Mangos by the sea in Speighstown, water’s edge dining, gorgeous setting and food! The local town is safe to walk around with my four year old and lots of shops to keep him entertained, he loved it!
We can highly recommend this resort and apartment and definatley would love to go back.

Another thing we liked was that it is based in a great laid back town, far away from the hectic tourism, yet with the beach at a couple of steps away and great restaurants and shopping closeby.

I am quiet sure we will rent it again!
