Additional Location Information

At the top of rue Bonaparte, you are just round the corner from the Metro Saint-Germain-des-Près in the heart of the intellectual 6th arrondissement. This is where the intelligentsia made the Left Bank their home; where Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir developed existentialist arguments in pavement cafés and where Sam Beckett and Giacometti got drunk together in the louche bars along the Boulevard Saint-Germain. Today, although it is still home to the Sorbonne and the elite Ecole des Mines, its energy is more cutting-edge fashion, modern art galleries, design shops and bookstores. Two of Paris' most famous hang-outs are still here: the Café les Deux Magots and the Café Flore attract a well-heeled clientèle now that Picasso and Hemingway have left their tables. The legendary Café Le Procope, founded in 1686, is a must-see of the neighbourhood if only for its extraordinary interior. The Ecole des Beaux Arts, once the world's most famous art school, is here. If you crave a little Matisse lithograph head for the rue de Seine where the capital's high-end galleries congregate. Saint Germain, rather like London's Covent Garden, may have lost some of its magic to tourism, but if you are prepared to explore its cobbled streets and tree-lined squares, the charms of the quartier are very much alive.
