with two elderly people and one 14 year old grandchild, a hearing dog and a pet dog (both very small) it is very hard to find any kind of holiday that suits all. Staithes was perfect and Spindrift Cottage had everything we needed. The little gated terrace gave my disabled husband the chance to sit with his little dogs and watch us on the beach or the sea wall catching crabs and having a great time, Watching the glorious sunsets where the huge rocks and cliffs turn to gold and seeing all the people going back and forth without getting crowded or knocked over. Because it is so close to the beach early morning and late evening walks were possible with the walking frame. Having the Café/sweetie shop right next door was a bit daunting at first but it became the best asset as my husband felt completely independent and happy if we wandered further afield. He did not feel left out at all. For sandier beaches we were spoilt for choice as the whole area has some of the most spectacular and beautiful in England. The walking (at least 5 miles a day) up and down the very steep hills ensured we went back healthy and fit. The cottage was cosy and luxurious but not aggressively so, we felt very much at ease and there was a great little stone floored lobby for the dog baskets, the dogs behaved impeccably because the facilities and the terrace were perfect for them. We even had a fire on the last night which was quite magical. Fantastic gourmet restaurants nearby! Even my husband was able to walk to one along the High Street.
