Additional Location Information
Stresa is a beautiful, elegant town on Lake Maggiore and it lies at the foot of the Italian Alps. It is graced with fine Liberty-style architecture, an abundance of immaculate and colourful gardens and a long promenade bordering the lake.
The town itself is only 50 km from Milano Malpensa Airport, and 85 km from Milan. The apartment is 800 metres from Stresa railway station with direct train to central Milan (45 mins) and only a short walk (100 metres) from the lake. The bus-stop for the lakeside towns of Arona and Verbania is a few minutes' walk as well as the bus-stop for the Alibus service which runs a shuttle service to and from the Milan airports (Malpensa and Linate).
The area where the apartment is located is pedestrianised but there is car-parking very nearby on the lake and free parking within 200-300 metres. It is also very close to the Palazzo dei Congressi.
There are numerous restaurants, cafés, shops (including some excellent food-shops) and a good supermarket in the immedicate vicinity.
At the lake, you will find the ferry boats that take you to the Borromean Islands of Isola Bella with its Baroque palace and Italianate gardens, Isola Madre with its museum (a former Borromeo palace) and botanical gardens and Isola dei Pescatori (a quaint fishing island, which is still inhabited and has several fish restaurants and gift shops). You can also visit other picturesque lakeside towns such as Intra and Laveno by boat or even take the ferry all the way to Switzerland.
The cable-car which whisks you up the Mottarone mountain (1500m) is within walking distance and from its summit you can admire the most spectacular view of not only Lake Maggiore but the 6 other Alpine lakes as well as Monte Rosa, the tallest of the Swiss Alps.
For garden-lovers there are the Villa Taranto, the Alpinia Gardens and Villa Pallavicino to discover. For music-lovers, Stresa hosts the world-famous music festival which runs every year from June to September - (website: hidden) for schedule of events.
The romantic and delightful Lake Orta can be visited in a day from Stresa and boasts the beautiful island of San Giulio in the middle of the lake and the Franciscan chapels of Sacro Monte (a Unesco heritage site). Also worth visiting are the hermitage of Santa Caterina and Rocca Angera, a medieval fortress with fantastic views from the ancient tower.
Stresa is an ideal place for walking with its stunning mountain scenery, whether it is for a gentle stroll along the passeggiata with its grand hotels of a bygone era or whether you are into more serious walking such as hiking in the Val Grande Nature Reserve (the largest in Italy). All the water-sports are available on the lake (water-skiing, sailing, swimming, wind-surfing) and in the winter months, you can ski (on the Mottarone), go snow-boarding and ice-skating.
Mountain biking and tours with expert guides who know the area well can be arranged. Tennis, riding and numerous golf-courses are available. The trenino tour of the area departs from Stresa car-park on the lake and is fun for all the family! Also by the lake there is a beach (deck-chairs and parasols are available to hire in the summer months) and a children's playground.
