Description from the owner
Villa Saparua is a stunning, three-bedroom, beachside villa that celebrates the history and grandeur of Dutch colonial Indonesia, and is a place of supreme taste and refinement. Designed by a Dutch and Indonesian couple, the authentic colonial style mixed with Indonesian antiques presents a rich and creative combination of the two cultures. From its recycled ironwood floors, time-honoured stained glass doors and louvered shutters, to its spectacular iron panelled ceiling (designed in 1800) in the kitchen and dining room, to the antique ceramic light switches and door handles and antique chandeliers and ceiling fans Villa Saparua captures the...Read more

Perth, AustraliaPeaceful, pleasant, isolated
Left on 02/02/2013 for a stay in December 2012
We, two couples and two single adults, stayed at Villa Saparua for 9 days over Christmas. The property is as advertised, the staff are friendly and cooperative and we enjoyed a pleasant stay, much of it relaxing on the verandahs around the house or in the pool. We needed four bedrooms, so the staff set up the study as an additional bedroom (it had the best air conditioner). The beds were comfortable and the staff changed the linen every day, even though we said this wasn't necessary. There were bath robes in the rooms and plenty of towels for bathrooms, pool and gym. There was no soap or shampoo provided. On the day we arrived, a Saturday, the air conditioner in one bedroom was not working at all and those in the other two bedrooms were not cooling effectively, so we spent a couple of uncomfortably warm nights before the staff could get someone in to fix them on the Monday. The old, decorative ceiling fans on the ground floor verandah would only work sporadically and briefly and the DVD player and CD player did not function properly. The Internet connection was fast. The kitchen equipment is basic, there was no coffee plunger or other coffee making facilities and only a small, two-cup electric jug. There was no kettle, we heated water in a pot. Villa Saparua is completely isolated, surrounded by rice paddies at the end of small track; there are no other houses within several hundred metres. Although this means the place is peaceful, there are no restaurants, shops or fresh food market within easy reach. The closest restaurants we found were at Echo Beach, about 30 minutes drive away. (The property comes with a car and driver, there are no taxis or other transport in the area.) The restaurant at the golf course may be closer, we didn't try that. There are two or three small convenience stores on the way to Echo beach. Depending on the traffic (heavy for a couple of hours in the morning heading in and in the evening coming back) it's a drive of 45 minutes or more to the supermarkets and the restaurants of Seminyak. The vehicle provided was in good condition, the driver competent, reliable and cooperative. The staff do not live in; there was a security guard provided at night. The beach, about 200 metres from the house, is sometimes suitable for board surfing although it wasn't good during our stay, the surf was better at Echo Beach. The sea was murky and there was a lot of garbage, plastic bags, bottles, old shoes, lumps of wood, tree trunks, etc., washed up on the sand; this may be a seasonal thing.
Villa Saparua may suit If you want a quiet, relaxed holiday away from everything. There are about 20 or so steps up from the basement garage to the house.
