Springfield, MissouriCasa Bambora meets all needs with a casual and relaxing atmosphe
Left on 02/20/2013 for a stay in February 2013
My two friends and I arrived at Casa Bambora on February 8, 2013 after traveling for 14 hours and 32 hours with out sleep. We were transported by the shuttle arranged by the owner without any problems. Upon our arrival we found our lovely studio apartment to be exactly as advertised. Plenty of space, very clean and well appointed with two very comfortable beds. The wrap around balcony offered seating and a hammock which was immediately put into use. The pool area was clean, beautiful and boasted additional hammocks. Theresa saw to our every need despite having a hectic day. We strolled into town to have an early dinner, returning by taxi after enjoying the sunset on the beach and a quick trip to the grocery store. ($4 one way). After a great nights sleep we awoke to bird song and a gorgeous view of the ocean. We enjoyed the facilities so much we only left for dinner the next day, content with the pleasures of the pool and socializing with the fellow residents. The wifi was great through out the property. On the following days we would get up early to enjoy the cool breeze, prepare breakfast and lunch in the unit or at the outdoor kitchen, enjoy the pool (and the dogs) and venture out for shopping, beach walking an dinner after a nap in the hammocks during the heat of the day. Theresa set up a sunset cruise for us with Marlin Del Ray that was hugely fun and included lunch, an open bar snorkeling, a tour of the shoreline and ending with a quiet sail back to the bay to watch the sunset. She also recommended some of our favorite restaurants, including Nibbana's. There was many options for food, entertainment, tours and shopping just a short walk away. On the beach you will find Pedro's where you can purchase fresh caught fish and shrimp (1 kilo of tuna or shrimp $16) which we prepared on the grill by the pool. We also found many vendors of fresh fruit, including the best pineapple I have ever eaten along the roadsides. In the evening it was very quiet although you could hear the live music wafting up from town. We felt like we were in our own little world, although there were houses nearby the grounds are landscaped so well it felt very private. Each of the units had a private balcony and shared the rooftop deck that offered a stunning view of the sunsets and a brilliant vista of stars in the evenings. We had booked the room thinking we would spend little time there but loved it so much we ended up spending the majority of the week poolside in utter relaxation. A tv with cable was provided if you felt the need to connect with the outside world as well as an ipod dock. The kitchen had everything necessary to prepare and enjoy meals. Hot water was Hot and abundant even with three people taking showers. By the pool was a bathroom so you did not have to return to your unit while using the pool or the bar area.. Laundry facilities were also available for use. At the end of our week, the owner, Joey, arranged transportation for us to our next destination (thank you Edgar). All of the fellow guests were personable and interesting individuals who were open to socializing in the public areas. Over all Casa Bambora was everything we expected and much more.
Key things to remember:
It is a longish walk to town by the road but there is a short cut down a dirt path. It is not the easiest to traverse but everyone made it up and down with no problems.
The blender at the bar transforms the delish local fruit into tasty smoothies and beverages.
There are two small grocery stores with in an easy walk that will provide most anything you want at reasonable prices. Every where we went accepted us dollars at a good exchange rate.
We did not see any bugs including mosquito's during our week long stay.
When eating fruit on the balcony the birds will attempt to get their share.
The three resident dogs and two cats are friendly and unobtrusive.
Joey and Theresa are extremely knowledgeable about the services and businesses around Tamarindo...take their advice. They not only gave recommendations but also set up transportation and tours that were well run and a good value.
If I had to come up with a negative it would be having a single room key...for most couples it would never be an issue but with a group of three wanting to do solo activities on differing timetables it did make planning a little complicated on a couple of occasions. This was a very minor concern and did not hamper our enjoyment in the least.
Casa Bambora is an excellent value for the cost. -

Left on 03/28/2012 for a stay in February 2012
As the title suggests our one week stay in February of 2012 was a great one. We split our stay in both the 1B Studio and 3rd floor studio.
Positives:
Joey is very friendly and goes out of his way to make his guests feel at home and comfortable.
The property itself is really nice, and the highlight is the custom pool with waterfall, equipped with hammocks and seats surrounding the property.
Free laundry is a plus, also the cabinets are fully stocked with all the utensils and basic ingredients you need to do your own cooking.
Sheets and towels were always clean. Washrooms were clean, we enjoyed the third floor suite a lot better though than the 1B Suite comparatively.
We got to meet and know a bit better some of the other people staying, and everyone is very friendly.
Joey's dogs are adorable are another aspect of what makes Casa Bambora unique too.
Lastly, Joey's knowledge of Tamarindo and Costa Rica as a whole is a valuable asset to your trip experience. He took us to Nogui's for fish tacos the first night, and let us know of some other great places for food/drinks/places to see and do.
Negatives:
To give you a comprehensive review some of the downsides we have noticed are:
1) the water level pressure on the 1B suite shower was not very even make it difficult to shower(comparatively, the 3rd floor suite washroom is excellent).
2) the location of Casa Bambora is up a narrow unpaved back alley hill that is unlit at night (so make sure to bring a flashlight). It's an inconvenience, especially in the evening.
Conclusion:
Other than that, the whole stay as very enjoyable and I would highly recommend anyone who wants a worry-free place to stay and enjoy Costa Rica, at a very reasonable price.
Despite the two points above, for the price I paid and the personable experience received, I rate it 5 stars. Pura Vida!Response from Joseph Vogan - 03/29/2012
Owner
Thank you for your review,
I just want to add that I do provide flashlights to my guests that don't have there own and the water pressure problem was due to my pressure switch malfunctioning and it has been replaced so the water now flows evenly again.

We stayed 11 days at Casa Bambora and we loved it.
The honeymoon suite is the best, great view from everywere
in the room or on the 3 sides private balcony.
Amazing sunset from our room and we could share the experience with others at the roof top balcony.
It was great to be outsite the busy downtown Tamarindo,
but still close enough.
Joey always made sure everything was O.K. and it was.
We made friens, it's easy to share time and experiences with others at the outside bar. The outside kitchen was great to share cooking and meals when we felt for it, but we had everything we needed in the privacy of our room too.
Great money value. -

Joey has created Casa Bambora to be a wonderfully comfortable retreat with a truly great view of the Pacific Ocean and surrounding mountains.
The rooms are clean, comfortable and spacious. Each room has its own kitchen, both and sitting area along with a wonderful view even ours which was on the main floor.
The common bar and kitchen area is well designed and a great space for the evening cigar or company.
Joey built a great waterfall that you can lounge in and or jump off of. The pool is spacious and very inviting.
We will definitely recommend Casa Bambora and we will be back!!

We had a wonderful stay at casa bombora. The room itself was great value and neat and tidy with a tv and icy cold air cond, we had two balconies and the views were stunning. We had rapid wifi in our room, and the owner fielded phone calls for us to help organise activities in town. The property is very safe and secure, and his dogs are adorable. The kitchenette was great and helped us save a little money on food. The bigger honeymoon suite looked amazing, but we stayed in the second floor studio which was perfect for us.
The property has been lovingly built by the owner Joey. He bought the place years ago before tamarindo was so deceloped, so he has the most prime spot on the hill in town. Although this means that its an easy 10 minute walk to the beach, casa bambora enjoys breathtaking view to the ocean both to the north and the west. In the morning would check the surf from our balcony and trot down to the beach for two surfs each day.
Joey seemed to be forever tinkering, with any empty studios and making improvements here and there. He clearly takes pride in his work and in ensuring that his guests enjoy there stay. Even though he is busy and unintrusive we would seek his advice every day regarding where to surf and the best places to eat and watch the sunset. He was extremely helpful not only for our stay in tamarindo, but he gave us invaluable advice for planning the rest of our trip through central america. He even emailed us after we left with contacts and tips to help us with our onward journey.
Overall, we were very happy staying at casa bambora. If wereturn to tamarindo we will definitely stay there and we might even stay in the honeymoon suite! -

I’m almost hesitant to rave about this place since I don’t want it to be so popular we’ll have a hard time booking when we want to come back. Joey has worked very hard over the years to make Casa Bambora a secluded paradise. It had everything we wanted: amazing views, privacy and ton’s of amenities – studio kitchen, outdoor kitchen with grill and blender, ice, pool, towels, laundry. We walked to the beach every day and took the towels with us, which was a nice perk. I felt like I was living in Tamarindo for a week, not just visiting. An amazing escape.

My stay at Casa B. was wonderful. It was quiet, relaxed, with everything at my fingertips. Joey was an excellent host. He was there when I needed something (even a little chat) and not there when I wanted quiet. The room was perfectly comfortable and the views from the room and the roof were great, especially the sunsets and the dramatic thunder storms.

Thank you Joey for the fabulous accommodations. You have yourself a hidden gem. The studio was perfect. So comfortable and everything you needed was provided. This was our first trip to Tamarindo and we stayed at Casa Bambora for 2 weeks. We were so sad to leave. By far this was the best place to stay in Tamarindo. Close to town yet up the hill enough that you can't hear anybody. The view was absolutely breath taking. We arrived late at night so couldn't see anything. When we awoke the first morning it was such an amazing surprise. I can't think of a better way to wake up each day than to hear the birds singing, monkey's howling, and to see the waves rolling in. We absolutely loved the huge balcony to sit and have morning coffee, the pool to chill at after a long day at the beach, and the kitchen area by the pool to grill dinner at night. Your puppies were the cutest ever. They are so well behaved. Chico...(the cat) what a character. It was so cute to have knock at our door wanting in and to stay with us. Joey you were such a gracious host giving us ideas of where to eat and things to see. We can't thank you enough. Casa Bambora made this the best vacation ever. We hope to see you again very soon and this time with all our friends.

Left on 02/01/2011 for a stay in November 2010
Howler and Capuchin monkeys moving around throughout the day and night, Humpback whales off in the ocean, giant grasshoppers and butterflies in the evening and sunsets that are truly spectacular. Not to mention the lush greenery and flowers all around and beaches that stretch for miles and miles. And that’s just what you’ll see while at Casa Bambora , truly a paradise worth seeing.
Casa Bambora is more than just a home away from home. After reading all of the wonderful reviews about this beautiful, hilltop retreat in paradise we thought even if it met most of our expectations it would be great.
We were met by our shuttle, which Joe (Vogan, owner of Casa Bambora) arranged for us and had a beautiful and informative ride from the Liberia airport to Tamarindo. Our driver even stopped and helped us get a few groceries for our first night.
What amazed us first and foremost was how clean everything was, no garbage in the ditches, peoples homes and properties were well kept and clean looking, everyone had pride in their country and property.
When we got into Tamarindo it was so refreshing to come into a tourist town and not see the typical american style fast food restaurants with the exception of one Pizza Hut. All of the businesses we passed were unique restaurants, surf shops and nice looking souvenir stores. Again, everything was very clean.
When we arrived at Casa Bambora, on the hilltop we were greeted by Joe, Richard, Torro and Kobe. Joe owns Casa Bambora and Richard is his charming father who will tell a good story or two. Torro and Kobe are Joe’s dogs and they will welcome you with open paws and come and visit your room if you let them.
Our apartment was on the top floor and had a 360 degree view of ocean, town, hillsides, rainforest and the pool with waterfall below. We had a hammock on one of our terraces which was so comfortable and you could just sit there and read while occasionally looking out to the ocean or watching the sunset.
Our apartment was wonderfully big with a comfy bed and super shower. Although it was really hot during our stay, at night we just left the windows and doors open and allowed the breeze to run through rather than use the air conditioner that was available.
The villa also has a wonderful patio by the pool with a full outdoor kitchen and bar-b-que. Joe recommended Don Fernando’s Butcher Shop and it was so nice to cook fabulous steaks, or pork, chicken whenever we felt like it and so cost effective too. A pool, BBQ, Bar, TV what more do you need to watch a little football!
The roof top deck is also an excellent place to watch a beautiful Costa Rican sunset and have a few drinks, listen to the howler monkeys and watch the many birds fly by.
Even a rainy day is nice, from the hilltop you can see all of the lush greenery and listening to the rain while swaying in a hammock is refreshing.
Joe having been there for 19 years was able to tell you where to find great food and even took us for a walk through town our first night showing us around. Amazing places to visit in Tamarindo are the following restaurants: Olga’s Café, Long Boards BBQ, La Esquina, Bueno appetitio, Nugueys, Eat at Joe’s, Nibbana, and Kahiki! Unfortunately Sharkey’s burned down while we were there, but I’m sure they are going to rebuild and when they do, have the Buffalo Chicken Sandwich – it’s outstanding.
The beach is wonderful and you can walk for miles, the people both local and expats are friendly and engaging. If you have a dog this is the perfect vacation – we’ll be bringing ours on our next visit.
This was our first trip to Costa Rica and now we could easily consider it another home. -

Joey has his place in tip/top shape. The patio on top of the building is unique and the views are ones to remember for a lifetime. You probably won't find a better deal in Tamarindo based on the room, quietness, lack of road dust like other low budget rooms and coolness of the owner, Joey. We stayed for a week and there were no issues and we would gladly stay there again. Way to go Joey!

I stayed at Casa Bambora from late October to early November and I have to say that I was so happy that I chose to stay there. I went to Tamarindo for vacation and planned on surfing every day. However, I found myself hardly wanting to leave Casa Bambora because it was such a great place to just relax. The price for a room is an absolutely unbeatable deal. I was amazed at how nice, clean, and well designed/decorated the rooms and bathrooms were. Joey, the owner, takes care of any needs that you might have and his dogs are reliable companions if you're ever looking for one. The proximity to town is perfect, not too close to be loud but at the same time not too far. Also, it seems that no matter where you are, there is always a view of the ocean, especially the top floor (gorgeous). Very romantic and/or chill place, I cannot recommend Casa Bambora strongly enough. I am definitely looking forward to my next stay there.

Casa Bambora is ideal for budget travelers who appreciate a clean spacious studio appartment with two balconies and a rooftop deck with a 360 * view. We loved the fact that it was away from the nightlife noises and dusty traffic.
Our host Joe , his father, the dogs and the caretakers were all very friendly. We loved coming home to our cozy place after a day of heavy duty vacationing, jumping into the pool or hit the outdoor shower. So many gorgeous beaches all within walking distance.
The only draw back is the steep hill to walk up to from town. Not for the faint of heart. Carrying our groceries and water bottles uphill gave us our daily work out.
We would definitly go back.Response from Joseph Vogan - 10/11/2010

Thank you for your review Sabina.
Casa Bambora is located on a small hilltop so yes there is a bit of uphill walking but it's really not that steep and is only 70 yards. It is well worth it for the views, the breeze and the tranquility that you get up on the hill and there is a refreshing pool to cool you off.
There are also plenty of taxi's to bring you up if you don't feel like walking.

hola joe!!!
what can i say about casa bambora that hasnt already been said?? first off i would like to thank Joe for being such a great host and for having a fantastic cabina.
my husband and i were in tamarindo in april and loved it so much we decided to extend our stay there for an additional week. luck was on our side and casa bambora had a room available. the price was absolutely right and the room was perfect w everything you could possibly need. we were on the second floor and the room had 2 balconies (one looking towards the ocean-(were i had breakfast most mornings and the other over the pool area), a comfy bed, hot shower & a/c. the room was clean and we felt safe leaving our belongings there.
my favourite part of casa bambora was definately the pool area. we must have spent countless hours in it relaxing, cooling down and shooting hoops-or at least trying to. the pool and grounds were maintained perfectly and the water temp & quality was great. unfortunately, we only discovered the 2 seats up top of the waterfall on our last day there so we never got to enjoy it as much as we would have liked. the pool area also had a bbq and bar area that we did take advantage of. another favourite was the upstairs 360 degree balcony. the view up there of the ocean and the surrounding area of tamarindo is so amazing it is hard to put into words. perfect for sunrises, sunsets & star gazing. it definately doesnt get any better than this.
we also enjoyed spending time w kobe and torro. 2 very friendly and wonderful dogs. pinto didnt come out too often but when he did it was great to see him.
overall, we enjoyed everything about casa bambora and would highly recommend staying there. everything about it was great!!!
thanks again joe and everyone at casa bambora. we are looking forward to next april!!!

We stayed at Casa Bambora in early July, and all I can say is wow! Joey and his father live there too (with 3 awesome dogs!) and could not have been more friendly and accommodating. The rooms are excellent, great a/C for those hot Costa Rican days and nights, and have a full kitchen.
The roof deck has arguably the best view in Tamarindo too. Another perk is the pool which is so refreshing after a long day fishing or at the beach, along with a convenient outdoor kitchen so you don't have to go upstairs for another Imperial ;).
Joey also knows the area very well and is a great resource for tours, restaurants, and surfing knowledge. It is a 10 minute walk to the beach and into town, and the trail can get muddy so careful trekking down at night.
Casa Bambora was excellent and we will definitely be staying here next time. Pura Vida! -

Casa Bambora was far quiter then some of the places we have stayed in town and had phenomenal views from our balcony and the observation deck!
The walk to stores and restaurants was only 10 minutes. The pricing can't be beat; rooms are well equipped , clean and air conditioned. Joey the host will help connect you to tours, fishing and great places to eat. We will definetely be back. -

Casa Bambora was a really good place for me to stay while in Costa Rica.
Really cost effective if you are the type that likes to cook. There are plenty of
good restaurants close by if you do not.
It's about a 10 min walk to the beach from the room, but well worth it. It was
hot for most of the days of my stay, but a quick dip in the pool always felt
great. The AC in the room made for a comfortable sleep. The view is
awesome, from the roof you can get a view of the beach and surrounding
terrain. It is a very peaceful location, often times i found myself just lounging
around and just hanging out there.
Joey is a great host, he can tell you where to go for good surf, renting
surfboards, food, and tours. He was very helpful. I would not hesitate to stay
at Casa Bambora in the future. -

The views from Casa Bambora are awesome. The rooms are clean, private,
and have plenty of windows that let the light and ocean breezes come

is easily accessible. The room I stayed in had a kitchen which was a
nice addition. The bathroom is big and has a huge open shower with hot
water. The town and beach is a short walk away. The owner Joe has plenty
of advice on where to go and what to do while staying in Tamarindo. Joe
is always available to accommodate any needs and provides a welcoming
atmosphere. The property also has a good size pool and a large BBQ area.
The whole property flows well and is a safe comfortable environment. My
favorite part is the price. I have visited Costa Rica twice now and had
yet to pay such a fair price for such a quality place! I look forward to
future vacations here and feel lucky to have found such a great place to

The apartments are fully equipped for cooking and you can buy groceries in town and cook your own meals in the apartment or on the grill at the barbecue by the pool while watching sports on the TV that hangs over the bar. Staying here certainly beats spending 100+ for an expensive hotel room in one of the hotels in town. It's only a 10 minute walk to town and it is quiet and peaceful away from the sounds of the town. There is a nice pool and the owner, Joey, is very helpful in giving information on where to go and what to see. He also speaks English and Spanish. We have recommended Casa Bambora to friends and relatives who have also stayed there and been very pleased.

Casa Bambora is one of the best hidden secrets in Tamarindo. It has the best 360 degree panoramic view for miles. Not only do all of the rooms have wrap around balconies with spectacular views of Langosta, Tamarindo, and Grande including not only the beautiful Pacific Ocean, but the mountains as well, the rooftop balcony has the best view in all of Tamarindo. Casa Bambora has a wondeful pool with great waterfall, that you can sit in, barbeque area, a great outdoor bar space, free onsite parking, a unique outdoor shower and great greenry and gardens. Casa Bambora is located in a great location just far enough from the noise of the nightlife of Tamarindo but also just a short walk from world class restaurants, great nightlife, and the beach. The sunsets are stunning in Tamarindo and some of the best I have see in the world and the sunsets from the roof of Casa Bambora are absoultly beautiful. Joey the owner is a great help with recommendations and discounts within Tamarindo and the surrounding area. He is always helpful and is very nice. The free wifi, kitchens in every room, and rate are unbeatable anywhere in Tamarindo. All rooms have a full studio and great privacy. I have stayed at many properties in Tamarindo and Costa Rica and this is the first place I felt like I could call home. I will definitly be back again very soon!
