Nestled on a hilltop in the midst of a lush, tropical garden and immaculately kept coconut plantation, The Teak House is one of Sri Lanka's South Coast’s most romantic and serene villa hideaways. DubaiAmazing Vacation
Left on 12/16/2012 for a stay in December 2012
My Wife and I stayed in the Teak House for 5 nights in December 2012 and we had the best time ever!!!
The House is even prettier than the pictures we saw online. Clean, Spacious and very quiet. It is a 2 mins walk to a beautiful and quiet Beach. Roshan and his brother Ruanne made the experience even better. Roshan cooked amazing dishes to us all week and even made a huge Birthday cake for me... Ruanne took us in his Tuk Tuk to some beautiful places around town, places we would have never found or heard about on our own. We will definitely come back next Year and will recommend this house to our friends.
Thank you Teak House Team!!!Response from Nicola CR - 12/17/2012

LondonAmazing!!
Left on 09/04/2012 for a stay in August 2012
We had an amazing time at The Teak House for 6 nights. The house is beautiful with everything you need - large bedrooms with comfy beds, tastefully decorated, a spacious and breezy living area, gorgeous garden with hammocks and views to the sea. The beach is a short (2 mins) walk down the lane at the bottom of the garden. It is a lovely sandy beach which is safe to swim in. The waves are great fun and we enjoyed hours of boogie boarding (2 boards at The Teak House). The sea may be quite rough for very young or timid children but our 9 and 7 year old loved it! Roshan and his brother are at the house to look after you and cook fabulous meals. Nicola, the owner, was really helpful when we were planning our trip and even put us in touch with a local driver who we used for our whole stay (we would also recommend Sujith if you need a driver!). All in all we had a fantastic time and I would not hesitate to recommend The Teak House.

Thank you for such a generous and heartfelt review. It is always lovely to know that others appreciate our little bit of paradise. It has been a long time in the creation.

AbingdonWhat a wonderful retreat
Left on 06/23/2012 for a stay in February 2012
We stayed at the Teak House in February, an ideal place to relax from the rigours of the real world. What a wonderful escape. We arrived by sea plane, which we highly recommend, and were met by RC, who drove us in his tuc tuc to the house, only ten minutes away where we were welcomed by his brother Roshan. The Garden is lovely, an old coconut plantation, filled with indigenous flora, the Teak House is as it says a very comfortable and cosy retreat. I had recently broken my back and am absolutely sure those two weeks of rest, with the sea, sound of the surf, birds, wild life, heat from the sun aided my speedy recovery. Roshan who runs the house is an excellent cook and produces delicious meals from local produce including fresh fish caught on the beach below and of course breakfast of fresh tropical fruit together with buffalo curd , sweetened with palm treacle. What's more the owners were a great help in organising our visit and giving excellent advice as to where to go , what to do and where to eat. There is so much to see in SL that we will certainly be going again.

StockholmNice house, poor customer service by managers
Left on 06/14/2012 for a stay in January 2012
We stayed at the Teak House for three weeks. It is a nice house and the beach is nice too. The brothers that look after the house are really friendly. Unfortunately the memory was negatively tainted by how we were treated by the owners of the house. During our stay a mouse went in to our wardrobe and ruined some quite expensive clothing (apparently this happened to the people that stay in the house before us as well, or so we were told). The owners of the place were very rude to us when it came to handling this issue, starting off with blaming us for the incident and coming with various personal attacks, wanting us to cover this on our insurance etc. In the end, for our own peace of mind, we had to just settle with a very small financial compensation, which didn´t come close to covered the damage caused. So unfortunately, we cannot recommend staying here, even though it is a nice house etc. It is not ok to treat people (that) rudely - especially not paying guests.

It is sometimes difficult to understand why people behave in a certain manner. When these guests returned from The Teak House, they wrote the following by way of email to us:
"We had a wonderful vacation! I have travelled extensively around the World, and I have to say that the three weeks we enjoyed at The Teak House qualifies as one of the top places I have ever been to. Our expectations were surpassed in almost every way possible. The house itself is a wonderfully minimalistic creation with warmth and caring built into the walls. The attention to detail blends perfectly with the rustique charm of simple craftsmanship. The bedroom is airy and comfortable, the shower was great. The garden is a perfect place to sit and enjoy the closeness to the nature, with all kinds of flora and fauna. The beach is picture perfect with pure fine-grained sand and the sea is clear and temperate, and we had it almost exclusively to ourselves - save a few fishermen and the occasional kid. Tangalle is a charming little place. We loved the markets and bought everything we didn't recognize and had poor Roshan prepare it for us. There are plentiful experiences and excursions of exceptional experiential value - close encounters with leopards, elephants, sea turtles and blue whales. Cultural experiences at Kataragama, Hanundugoda and Galle. We fell in love with the ladies at Dickwella Lace and pretty much cleared out their stock. Roshan's cooking was superb (a good thing, since the restaurants we tried were really quite awful!), and we didn't lack anything. There is an amazing range of exotic and exciting fresh produce to explore. Ruan was a quiet, but pleasant presence and he drove us diligently to wherever we wanted to go - although I could see that he thought us odd at times (eg when we wanted to go for a ten minute ride to try out a roadside hopper place).
All in all: when I write my book - this is where I will want to be for a few months to get it done."
They also said that a small amount of damage had been done to a couple of items of clothing they had hung in the cupboard. This has never happened to our clothing or to other guests' clothing before and we took the incident very seriously indeed. We did not understand why they did not make a claim on their travel insurance however. Nonetheless, after much toing and froing, we made a payment to them as a gesture of goodwill. They never acknowledged that payment which surprised us. That was all more than three months ago.
It is always disappointing when someone decides to write a review such as this but, since it has never happened before, we shall put it down to experience.

The teak house exceeded my expectations in every way. Not only was the house stunning and unique (not to mention comfortable), the beaches were right out of a movie set! The location is perfect- I thought I would have preferred to be directly on the beach but that proved not to be the case. You can hear the waves crashing all night long from the house ,and get a fabulous breeze bc your on top on a small hill. That also puts you at a safe height- should there be a tsunami evacuation during your trip (which did happen while we were there). I always felt safe and completely take care of. The owners were available via email at all times- which is rare for a rental property like this. Nicola would email me to check in and make sure we were alright from time to time , which we really appreciated. The house staff were very accommodating yet at the same time unintrusive. The meals were the real highlight of this house. We ate one meal st the aman nearby- not worth it at all. Roshan 'a meals were of the charts delicious (and healthy!)
I recommend this house without hesitation!Response from Nicola CR - 04/25/2012

Dear Leslie, we have had some wonderful reviews over the years and yours speaks volumes about The Teak House experience. It is a very special place and we are so thrilled that you all enjoyed it so much.
We do like to make sure our guests have arrived and are safe. In your case, it was a particularly challenging week with Sinhala New Year and the tsunami alert.
Thank you. -

Dubai, UAEA perfect Sri Lankan experience.
Left on 12/02/2011 for a stay in November 2011
We spent a week at the Teak House with our two children (aged 9 & 11). Prior to our arrival we had been seduced by the website and all the promise of great food, beautiful beaches and an authentic Sri Lankan experience. Well, it matched all our expectations. The property is perfect for a family and extremely comfortable with an eye for interior detail. The bedrooms were charming and the walk in shower a nice touch. The kitchen anex works extremely well as does Roshan who continually delivered excellent dishes to our taste and even managed to entice my son into devouring a grilled lobster bought from the local fisherman. The beach was a mere stroll away and completely empty bar the fishermen. The adjacent beach was also stunning and had the added bonus of a snake gorging on an unfortunate frog. The boogie boarding was great fun but we had brought life jackets just to be on the safe side. Great memories (and photos!). A two hour trip to Yala provided a fantastic 'pocket' safari for all. Elephants, leopards and crocs all appeared for our benefit. Nicola had a driver on hand who was extremely competent and helpful (best to agree the plan in advance though). So, in summary; excellent service, fab,fab food, great place and a gorgeous unspoilt setting. Oh, and great value too.

We stayed here fro 5 nights with our children teenagers - 10,13 and 15.
The accommodation is memorable and very comfortable .We loved the open living room .
Roshan was superb -very helpul , good cook and unassuming
Location is great , although is not right on beach .The kids and I (Dad) had great fun in waves and on beach. My wife was a bit nervous initially as 'backwash' from beach takes you by surprise.
Get Roshan to take you to fish market for wonderful Tuna,Squid and prawns- all bought at cost- fantastic value.
Weather was quite cloudy due to timeof year ,but we were quite happy as not natural tanners!
Beaches are pretty, but were anrrower than we had expected.
Owner is going to build a pool- don't know why with wonderful surf- but will put up price -

We (family of 4, two teenage children) stayed for four nights in September 2010. Great location, short walk to lovely deserted beach. We all loved it, peacefull and relaxing with excellent attentive staff. Roshan will if requested prepare simple but delicious home cooked meals. Great place to chill out. Surrounding area has a pleasant vibe. Owners have contact with reliable driver. Trip to Yale National Park is a fairly long day but worth it although don't believe them if they assure you that you will see a leopard! Aman resort is good for meals (and massage) in the unlikely event you tire of Roshan's cooking.

We have just had two weeks staying at the Teak house. It was perfect for the
holiday if you want to relax, unwind and listen to the waves roll in from the
beach. It was so great. Monkeys swinging from coconut trees. Warm balmy
evenings. The house chef/staff is a brilliant cook and makes a great curry. He
is seen but never heard. What a lovely man. Tangalle is 10 mins by tuk tuk
which is great for supplies and a look around. The beach is superb and only a
few minutes walk. The house is very secluded and gets you away from
everything, basically heaven.
We loved it and will be back!

The Teak House is warm, inviting and relaxing - a peaceful home in which to escape from the real world and indulge in Roshan's fabulous food and soporific afternoons in the hammock.
There's a stunning beach just a few minutes walk away with the two dogs who treat you as though you'd been looking after them for years!
I love wooden houses and this is as log cabin (without the need for any heating) as it gets.. simple and unpretentious with clean, properly functioning bathrooms and comfortable beds.
Thank you!

Left on 03/22/2010 for a stay in February 2010
What a fantastic 10 days we spent at the Teak House.
It is the most beautiful and peaceful place and waking up to the noise of
the waves was just idyllic. Roshan looked after us all so well and cooked the
most delicious food throughout our stay. We were more than happy to relax
in the hammocks in the beautiful garden watching the birds and the
monitor lizards, but we did make a couple of excursions that Roshan
organized for us to Yala National Park and the Buddhist Temples.
We had the beach to ourselves most of the time apart fom the two lovely
Teak House dogs who would escort us there. On one occasion we helped
the fishermen haul in their nets and then chose some fish that we took back
and Roshan cooked for us that night.
We were all very sad to leave the Teak House and can’t wait to return again.

Very well looked after and all needs met by the staff at the Teakhouse. Great chef if you desire food to be prepared for you at the villa, lovely spacious bedrooms and fantastic powerful shower!
Two very friendly dogs to keep you company and keep other stray dogs at bay!
Great location to explore the south of the country, difficult to fault the place only thing I would say is not directly on to the beach as I assumed but literally a 2 minute walk down a private path, hardly a hardship!
Owners based in the UK were extremely helpful and of great assistance whilst planning before the trip.
Thank you for a very pleasant stay hope to return one day. -

CirencesterCute Teak House
Left on 03/01/2010 for a stay in January 2009
We stayed over Christmas and New Year and had a fabulous time. The Teak House is a sweet cottage (for want of a better word - they don't really have cottages in Sri Lanka, but it seems more appropriate than the ubiquitous "villa") less than 100m from the beach, but up a flight of steps so you can go to bed at night hearing the sea but not worrying that it might come in through the window.
The beach is miles long and was completely deserted most of the time, apart from one afternoon when we helped the fishermen haul in their nets. The weather was perfect and the sea invigourating (it's calmer if you wander up the bay a bit), but all that you may be able to find in other places in Sri.
What makes the Teak House so special is the quiet location, the beautiful garden, the airy coolness of the house and, not least, the discreet ministrations of Roshan. Apart from the distant sound of chopping, you hardly knows he's there until he puts in front of you another perfect breakfast of tropical fruit or a delicious curry.
Tangalle is 10mins or so up the road on the bus (not perhaps a ride for the nervous) for all you might reasonably need (cash, food, booze, medicine etc).
I suppose the crucial question is would we go again? The answer is emphatically - Yes!

LondonFabulous tropical hideaway
Left on 02/24/2010 for a stay in February 2010
We loved the simple old colonial style of the Teak house set in its beautiful tropical garden just steps from the most beautiful beach in the world. Our eight year old naturalist son appreciated the birds, monitor lizards, bats, frogs and lizards as well as the Teak House's two resident dogs. It is a very calm environment from which you can venture out to explore the wonderful area - Yala National Park with its leopards, the Turtle nesting beach at Rekawa, the ancient Buddhist temples, the market in nearby Tangalle. The delightful Roshan takes care of everything so brilliantly. He is a wonderful cook and organises anything you can think of with seemingly effortless efficiency.

Left on 02/11/2010 for a stay in February 2008
We spent 10 days at the Teak House, and loved every minute of it.
It is located above a beautiful beach, surrounded by a large garden full of
exotic vegetation and flowers. The bedrooms are very spacious, and open
on the garden, and like the rest of the house, were beautifully furnished.
The living room opens on a large balcony, with lovely views of the sea
through the trees. The owner must have a real talent in interior decoration
as there is an refined and elegant, yet cozy atmosphere in the whole house,
and it is just so nice to relax and enjoy it that none of us felt like leaving at
all, even for short sightseeing trips.
Every day we were treated to a complete culinary feast by live-in
housekeeper/cook, Rashan.
What I liked least about our stay... is the fact that we had to leave!
It was one of the nicest holidays we've ever had.

The thought of now having to live without the sound of the waves and away from this beautiful house is saddening.
