Description from the owner
Situated en the Natural park of the Straits of Gibraltar, a short walk of 25min to the town of Tarifa through one of the most beautiful and interesting coasts of Spain. Its an 8 min drive to town, supermarkets, restaurants ect... The access road to the house is good except the last 800m that is a dirt track, normal cars can access the house perfectly, but low sport cars can not. Surrounded by sea views, nature and beaches. It is the European house closest to Africa. Here you will not hear the noises of the modern world, you will only listen to the birds signing, waves breaking on the beach, the breeze of the wind and the frogs in the pond. A...Read more

Londoncharming House in Stunning Location
Left on 05/28/2013 for a stay in May 2013
Casa de la Costa is a charming little house in the most beautiful location right on the edge of the coastal path. It takes just under 30 minutes to walk along this rugged path into the pretty town of Tarifa where there are plenty of good tapas bars, food and shops. The house is set in a lovely garden and very secluded apart from the occasional jogger who runs along the path at the foot of the garden! Our week was quite chilly and as we were the first guests of the season it took a while for the house to warm up but the wood burner took the edge off and we were supplied with plenty of wood once we had asked for it. It is the perfect hideaway spot for a couple/ single. You need a car to get to the house but easy access to beaches for wind sports and loads of lovely walking. Marcos, the owner is charming and very helpful. Would definitely go back again.

I am tempted to keep this little treasure to myself! but luckily Marcos, the owner, shares his little paradise.
From the start of booking, Marcos the owner was friendly and informative and answered e mails promptly. We were met by his manager Paco - such a lovely man, always there with a smile and willing to help in any way he could.
The cottage is situated in the most idyllic setting - the views as in the photographs are amazing.
Tarifa itself is just a short distance away and has a friendly feel, unspoit by tourism.
We didn't feel the need to eat out here, we enjoyed memorable barbeques in the garden with the best views in town.
However long you stay here I can assure you it wont be enough - we have left a piece of our hearts in this lovely place. -

The last thing this magical place needs is publicity.
The view from Casa de la Costa could not be more beautiful and more exclusive than what this extraordinary location is offering. We were absolutely mesmerized ...
Tastefully decorated casa with a good selection of books and dvds perfectly blends in the picturesque surroundings ... You can not miss anything you wouldn't miss at home (unless of course you are a big fun of dishwasher and microwave oven) and even if- there is always Paco(!)-' the faithful guardian of the casa ',the helping hand ,the biological gardener and the tourist guide of the area .
The owner of the Casa -Marcos is "watching "things from the distance making sure to satisfy the customer and to make your stay as pleasant as possible . Very responsive ,always there to answer all your questions by mail -very comforting specially when facing the unknown .
Do not be afraid of the wind - you can always hide in the bamboo hut with a good book and a glass of wine(Marcos thought about everything!) having a view on africa exclusively for you. If you prefer more action -just decide for one of the many beautiful beaches to face the wind on your board or simply feel the warmth of sand under your feet.
Tarifa is a small ,cute city still untouched by a mass tourism.(what a relief to find such a place !)
Even during a high season( July) you do not feel overcrowded and can enjoy little local restaurants and tourist attractions without queuing and getting frustrated ;)
If you want to explore the area just drive 10 km from Tarifa to discover the Roman Ruins of Baelo Claudia or the stunning view from the hill of Vejer de la Fronterea .
It was an enjoyable stay for all of us!
If we will be back?- still this year!

Left on 07/07/2012 for a stay in June 2012
Imagine this : You meet to get the keys at a nearby grocery store, you follow a friend named Paco in his truck with his family through the backroads of Tarifa, driving through an abandoned military base. You pass cactus and cattle, and as you think you might drive off a cliff, the ocean at your side, you see your house. Run by a windmill and heated by gas, you rely on nothing else. Your back yard is on the top of a cliff overlooking africa. It was sunny around 80 degrees Fahrenheit but windy enough you weren't miserable in heat. A steep hike down to the nitty gritty shore line is a must. Beautiful coast with sea creatures everywhere and a 2 mile rugged path to downtown. It was heaven, and we will return.

This has to be one of the most relaxing holiday i've had yet. I stayed here in July and could not get over how beautiful and serene the area was.
The Casa is situated in a quiet corner of the natural park and you really feel like you're the only person for miles around. The property boasts incredible views over the ocean to Morocco which are absolutely breath taking.
Its only a short distance to town and the beach and the owner (Marcos) is fabulous! We could'nt have asked for a friendlier or more helpful host!
The interior was tastefully decorated and very clean. If you're looking for something just a little different to your stock standard hotel I would not hesitate in recommending this property. -

My memories of the days and nights I spent at the chalet with the incredible views to Morocco will stay with me for the rest of my life. The photos I took while there don't do it justice. Marcos is a great host with plenty of local knowledge. I will be going back as soon as I can.

California, USABreathtaking location, Villa needs work
Left on 04/28/2011 for a stay in April 2011
Absolutely stunning location at the southernmost tip of Spain, this villa was located right on the bluffs overlooking the sea and the lights of africa are easily viewed at night out of the surprisingly small windows. (The location is what saved this from a 2-star rating.) Given the location, one would expect rather expansive glass and more of a connection to the outside but inside the villa, the experience was disappointing. The few windows have bars over them and are small. The villa has a very musty/moldy smell as this is a high-humidity location and an added-on bathroom that suffered from a lack of a good deep cleaning. Rolly-polies were the constant visitor on the bathroom floor as well. No central heat means trying to reduce humidity with a wood stove which we were never able to get working. Even in april that made the nights pretty cold. Barely enough hot water for a shower with nearly no pressure and lots of mildew in the shower which is a non-starter for us.
On a more positive note, the property manager Paco could not have been more pleasant or welcoming - he was fantastic. He recommended a great restaurant in nearby Tarifa which did not have a tremendous amount of options. He also showed us his vegetable garden and very generously gave us some fresh veges from it. Very kind indeed - thank you again, Paco!
Unless you kitesurf or are planning a trip to africa, Tarifa is not a "destination city". That said, the breezes and beautiful beaches make this an awesome destination for kitesurfing or windsurfing. Again, the views and the experience of the long bumpy dirt road drive complete with adorable cattle crossing the road in front of you just to arrive at the villa makes this unforgettable and makes you feel like you're really away from it all. However, the villa did not have basic amenities (like a blow drier) and anyone with allergies beware of the mold and mildew that permeates the atmosphere within the villa.Response from Marcos Welsh - 05/01/2011
Owner
The house is an old farm building that we refurbished, the laws of The Natural Park of the Straits of Gibraltar do not allow to change the exterior of the building neither the size of the windows unfortunately. But still the extensive garden on the edge of the sea facing Africa and the covered terrace allow one to enjoy this magic spot anyway.
Bear in mind that this is a country house, and not a modern apartment in town. Sometimes some insects come in. The house has PVC sealed windows and door to minimize nature coming inside for a visit! An apartment in town has less probabilities of having Roly-poly. Never the less, we take great care in taking any insects found in the house back to their home in the garden.
I am the owner of the property (Marcos Welsh) and at the moment I am abroad, so at the time that the guest came, I was not there. Paco is the Property Manager, a very kind and helpful person. If whilst staying in the house there is any problems, please contact him and he will immediately come to help out.
Our aim in renting this house is that our guests have a peaceful beautiful care free experience in this extraordinary geographical location.
These guest did a last minute reservation for a 2 night stay. Normally our reservations are done in advance with more time to prepare. As I said, I personally was not there and did not see how the house was handed over to our guest. It is the first time that this has happened to us, and I extend my apologies to our guest. We never had a guest complaint on these issues and I know Paco and the cleaners do their best, so this is highly unusual, but unfortunately I was not there to see my self, neither the guest contacted Paco to tell him, im sure Paco would have upgraded them to the big house if there was any problem with cleanness, humidity or water pressure.
It has been an unusually wet and humid winter. We have not had any complaints from guests that have stayed during this winter. But the area is more humid than other areas of Andalusia as it sits in between the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean. Normally at the begging of May the weather becomes drier. But even so, the house has a fire place and dehumidifier that work well.
The electricity of the house is produced from the wind and sun. This electrical system allows you to use T.V., lights, blenders, fridge, shavers, computers, charge phones, etc, just like any other house. The only appliances that do not work are a hair drier, electric toaster (we have a gas toaster), electric heater (we have a fire place). We do suggest to our guests that they turn off or unplug any device that is not in use, the same as we should all do on the main grid, this helps save energy. On the positive side, this house does not produce CO2, minimizing our carbon foot print. Small price to pay for not using a hair drier! But still, this sort of country living is not for everyone. Although nearly all our guest love the experience of living in a house that makes its own energy and food. We always try to give some home grown veggies to our guests.
Tarifa is a destination that highly appeals to the great majority of people that come to visit, there is a ton of things to do that do not involve kite surfing. Gibraltar is 30min, Jerez and Malaga 90min, Seville 2h,the old fishing port, the fish market, the old town with its maze of streets, cafés and atmosphere, the Roman Ruins of Baelo Claudia in Bolonia, Night life comparable to Ibiza, beach life and beaches to get lost on, incredible dinning, whale watching, Tangier at your door step, diving, climbing, adventure activities, horse ridding, Spanish culture and horse fairs, the vibrant energy that this place and its people have to offer in one of the most unspoilt coast of Spain is what attracts the people that come to visit. Tarifa is bang in the middle of cultural and historic south Andalusia, and a great base to explore the area!
Paco and My Self make a great effort in making this magical location a place for people to come and relax, 99% of our guest have a positive and unique experience on the closest house to Africa, and a lot of then repeat each year!
Sincerely,
Marcos Welsh

Left on 11/23/2010 for a stay in November 2010
We have stayed in Casa de la Costa for almost two weeks in the middle of november. The Casa is comfortable, the surrounding is beautiful en the silence is superb. The cows ad a nice sound and sight to it all. You can walk to Tarifa along a beautiful costal path or take a short trip with your car along a bumpy road.
If you share our passion for kitesurfing; keep in mind that you need the car to go surfing. There are multible nice spots further to the north of Tarifa.
Tip; In this time of year you'll need the fireplace to keep the moist away in the house. Make sure you use little chunks of wood. -

BerlinA Spot of Particular Magic and Beauty
Left on 11/03/2010 for a stay in August 2010
The Casa de la Costa is situated on a spot of particular magic and beauty: The surrounding nature reserve, the location on the narrowest part of the Strait of Gibraltar with the stunning view to Morocco and the passing cargo ships and the tranquility of the place which is only accompanied by the wind, the low humming of the ships in the far background and some birds and dogs make it a unique retreat for relaxation and meditation. At the same time the vibrant life of Tarifa and its beaches is close by.
The house is simple but tasteful and charming and decorated with love for detail. And Marcos, the owner, is a great person, taking care of the needs of his guests and with a lot of knowledge about the area.

MadridWhat a place!!!
Left on 10/30/2010 for a stay in August 2010
I have only good words for this amazing, unforgetable, uncomparable house in Tarifa. My girlfriend and I spent a week last summer and it was one of the best trips I have ever had. A great place for quietness and peacefulness, not far from town, but away from the crouds. Great taste in decoration and style. The owner was very kind showing us arround and pointing out the doos and dont´s in the area. Apparently he made the house himself with the help of local labour. there is a vegetable garden that we were able to work a bit and taste as well!!! I could imagine that coming along with young kids could also be a great experience. The sea is right next to the house with an almost privite access, and that is the waters of the Strait of Gibraltar with extremely rich and clean waters. I´m missing it already...
