    Additional Location Information

Le Mazet is perched just above the Tarn River in the region of Aveyron, with a view of the surrounding countryside that extends for miles. The house looks down on the Tarn as it winds its way through a lovely valley with streams, old mills, ancient villages, an old chateau, groves of fruit trees, wheat fields and vineyards. The rolling hills in this region are laced with small country roads, historic villages and farms, Romanesque churches, and spectacular views. This is a great place to unwind, with many good local restaurants, and markets with fresh cheeses, pates, vegetables and fruits to cook at the house and enjoy beside the wood-burning fireplace. Nights are beautiful, with owls hooting nearby and starry skies unblemished by city lights. The region is still relatively unfamiliar to the hordes of tourists who flock to other, better-known and overcrowded areas. In August, local country fairs are a must-see. Le Mazet is ideal for people who love to hike, bicycle, play tennis, swim, canoe, and explore. Or for visitors who enjoy shopping at antique shops and art galleries, visiting museums and enjoying the concerts and other arts activities that abound in the region during the summer. Within a short distance are a number of famous tourist destinations, including Carcasonne, Cordes, Rocquefort (with the famous cheese caves), Toulouse, Albi (birthplace of Toulouse Lautrec), the suspension bridge at Millot (world's highest), and natural sights such as the famous Gorges du Tarn. Since this is a rural area, public transportation is limited to taxis. A rental car is recommended to take advantage of the fabulous sightseeing available in this region, and free parking is provided at the house. Railroad connections can be made at Albi or Toulouse; the international airport at Toulouse is only 1 hour and 20 minutes away.

The best of beautiful, rural France with everything but the tour

Left on 03/23/2013 for a stay in August 2011

If you are looking for "la France Profonde" (real/rural France) then you will love your stay at Le Mazet. The 18th century farmhouse is comfortable, modernized and well outfitted, yet rustic and charming - with jaw-dropping views. What you will see during your stay: gorgeous views at every turn; more picture perfect villages, towns, castles, fortresses, churches, historic sites and dramatic scenery than you will have time to explore. What you will eat: the freshest of fruits and vegetables, locally made cheese and sausages from the local farmers' market, patisseries, and bread you buy daily from the local boulangerie. You will enjoy beautifully prepared, delicious meals at authentic local restaurants. Enough outdoor activities to keep the avidly athletic well exercised. And friendly, patient French people who are delighted to make your acquaintance. What you won't see: tourists - American or otherwise. What tourists there are, are French...they know where to vacation! Come and enjoy the experience of living in the French countryside like a Frenchman. We plan to return - the house, the village, the outings - one visit to Le Mazet is just not enough!
