Tucson, AZThe best choice we could have made!
Left on 05/14/2013 for a stay in April 2013
This apartment is everything the owner promises, and more! Very comfortable, clean and convenient--it was like living in Paris, not simply visiting. A much better choice than a hotel room. Walking along the canal was lovely and relaxing; a small supermarket, bakeries, restaurants and train/metro stations were literally minutes away. Jason was extremely accommodating and cheerful, and provided nearly everything we would need before we had even arrived-including a new espresso pot after I had mentioned that I prefer espresso to French Press. No hotel that I've ever stayed in has gone that far to ensure my comfort. All we had to do was pick up the groceries we needed from just down the street. I felt somehow safer knowing that my "host" was right next door, yet during our 17 day stay, we only needed to ask for two things-a computer print out of a form we needed, and for Jason to call a taxi for us when we were leaving, both of which we received with a smile. This apartment really was a home away from home. I would recommend staying there to anyone, and my husband and I would definitely stay there again. I hope future guests enjoy the espresso as much as we did!

Thanks so much for the review.
We do try to make our guests as comfortable as possible, and we know what it's like being abroad and not having access to a printer for certain tickets, so we're happy to print stuff out. Basically, we're willing to do anything we can do to make your stay simpler - that way you can concentrate on having a large amount of fun!
Thanks again for all the kind words. :-)

We stayed at the Canal apartment for our two-week honeymoon in Paris, so we were particular in what we wanted and thorough in our research. Renting an apartment in Paris from the west coast of Canada meant taking something of a leap of faith, and we found that there were three criteria we were unwilling to be flexible on: convenience, cost and overall desirability.
The Canal apartment offers convenience in a number of ways. First, it's a block away from Jacques-Bonsargent station, which is only one stop from Gare de L'Est and one stop from Republique. Those two stations are hubs from which one can access all of Paris easily. It is, literally, 15 minutes from the apartment to the Palais Royale - Louvre station, which is at the front steps of the Louvre.
If you are looking at apartments then you probably already know that there is a huge savings to be had in apartment rentals versus hotel rates. We looked into staying at one of the Citadine hotels in Paris because they have in- suite kitchens, but they start at 200 euros a night.
Finally, there's overall desirability. We are both professionals, and we appreciate professionalism: from the beginning, we found that booking the Canal apartment was secure and sensible. Throughout the booking and our stay, Jason was a consummate professional with every aspect of the rental. The amenities in the apartment are very well-kept. The Wi-Fi is easy to access, and unlike the Wi-Fi in any hotel we have ever stayed in, it is both reliable and fast.
We spent a several weeks researching Paris options through every vacation rental venue that there is before settling on the Canal apartment for our honeymoon, and in every way it was a leap of faith that provided glowing memories that we will cherish for the rest of our lives. It seemed to be convenient, priced right, and generally desirable and, on all three accounts, it totally was. It was the perfect center of a perfect honeymoon.

Wow, thanks for the great review!
We really wanted your honeymoon to be an unforgettable moment, and I'm so pleased you loved it! We know what it's like booking apartments, and our experience has hopefully helped us to make things as simple and dependable as possible for our guests.
It was a pleasure having you to stay, and I hope you'll be able to revisit the place of your honeymoon sometime soon! We'd be delighted to have you back :-)

Service was great, everything simple and well-explained, excellent booking and info given, no problems there.
Apartment was spotless, and so tasteful it made us want to go shopping for homewares. One excellent thing was the amount of info that was in the apartment to help us get around and enjoy the area.
The location is fantastic and we would stay in the exact same place if we were to go to Paris again.Response from Jason Whittaker - 02/27/2013

Hepburn Springs, AustraliaVery sweet apartment!
Left on 10/21/2012 for a stay in September 2012
My teenage daughter and I loved our weeklong stay at The Canal apartment early in September. It's situated in a very authentic neighbourhood, the very pretty Canal St Martin is literally just around the corner, and Du Pain et Idees, the very best bakery(really - it's incredible!!!) in all of Paris is a street away.
The apartment itself is cosy and decorated beatifully. We liked it alot and certainly felt 'at home' every time we returned from our adventures around the city. To me, The Canal apartment is very much part of our Parisian experience, and the thought and effort that the owners have gone to to make it so welcoming is very much appreciated. We will fondly remember out time there.
Everything is very comfortable. The kitchen is well stocked. The books are interesting. The wallpaper is gorgeous. The view to the street below (which I enjoyed several times from the large open windows, glass of wine in hand) is a microcosm of Parisian life, and something I loved - people walking dogs, riding bikes, sitting outside at the restuarant talking and laughing. It was wonderful!
My recommendation - stay! It's a great apartment owned by lovely people.

Thanks Jason for our recent stay. Everything was exactly as per your website and we loved our 5 night stay. Your apartment is perfectly clean, well furnished and worked well with our 2 kids. a big thanks for providing the travel cot and linen. Your neighbourhood was so much fun to explore and the more we visited the better known parts of Paris to stay, the more we were pleased that we were beside Canal St Martin. Here we had all the great trimmings of Paris, but did not have to share them with thousands of other tourists...we will be back, big thanks to you, Phil

We arrived in Paris on a monday afternoon. We took the train to Gare du Nord and walked from there to the apartment (10-15 min), which was no hassle, even with two large suitcases. We got an e-mail from Jason some weeks before arriving so we had all the info we needed to get to the apartment and felt very welcome. The location is perfect, right by the canal and with nice small shops and restaurants nearby. We also walked from the apartement up to Montmartre twice which was nice:) there are several stations for the Paris city bikes nearby and we used them all week. The apartment really feels like home and is fully equipped with everything you need. It was also a great plus that this apartment has wifi. All in all we were very pleased with our stay!

Washington, D.C.A nice refuge near the canal after exploring Paris
Left on 05/09/2012 for a stay in April 2012
My husband and I stayed here in late april/early May 2012, and it was nice to have a spacious place that felt more like a home than a hotel room. We enjoyed all of the cute, quirky decorations in the apartment. We made abundant use of the free wi-fi, which worked very well. Jason was friendly and efficient during check-in and check-out, and there was fruit and a bottle of wine when we arrived. The bed was comfy, there wasn't much outside noise, and it was great to be near the canal to relax a bit during the May 1 holiday when everything else was closed. As another reviewer noted, there is a grocery store very close to the apartment that's useful for picking up things for a meal, snack or drinks, etc. We recommend having dinner at La Paella, just a bit further up the street, and visiting Du Pain et des Idées for pastries in the morning, especially for the chocolate pistachio pastries.
We also want to thank Jason for kindly directing us to a pharmacy that was open on May 1, when my husband needed some medicine.

It is so difficult to put into words how much we love the great/canal apartments, outstanding service and piece of mind we get every time we stay with Jason. Wow. We really love everything about the Canal apartment. Beautiful location, beautiful interior and outstanding service from Jason as always. We will never stay anywhere else. Staying in the Canal apartment is like living in Paris which adds to the experience. You couldn't shop at the market early on a sunday morning and then cook up chicken and potatoes in a hotel? But you can in the tiny, beautiful kitchen in the canal apartment. Jason's attention to detail in outstanding. He ensures every need is met...he even leaves you an umberella, just incase it rains. We still can't get over the outstanding value of his apartments, surely luxury like this should cost more? We stayed as a group and thought the apartment was spaciuos and perfect for four. We loved...the gorgeous sofa bed which is perfect for four to watch a movie on, the great selection of books, Free Wifi, the witty and oh so helpful manuel, the 5.1 sound system, dancing to Jason's Paris CD with a glass of wine, the dish washer, the view from the window whilst drinking a cup of Violet tea, the great location, the fun we had and the fact that for a week the canal apartment was ours! Thank you Jason, for everything...we will see you again soon :) Mwah xoxo

The apartment is close enough to walk to, from Gare Du Nord when traveling on the Eurostar from London. Directions are provided as are the codes to get into the building. The staircase is like no staircase we have ever seen before; old worn wooden spiral. Seriously cool! Jason showed us around the apartment. There is a large lounge/dining room with big windows with window boxes, a bedroom with double bed as well as a small bathroom. The kitchen is amazing; so small but packed with small prep bench, sink, bar fridge topped with microwave, washing machine and finally a gas stove top over an electric oven over a dishwasher. The whole apartment is decorated in a quirky way which we loved. There is a Franprix a few doors down, a brilliant boulangerie called Du Pain et des Idées close by, the metro station Jacques Bonsergent is just down the street and an excellent restaurant, Les Enfants Perdus is a short walk away. We found this apartment an perfect base to explore Paris from and would stay here again if we ever get the chance to visit again.

We (self, husband, 6 yo, 3yo) enjoyed our 5 day stay at the Canal apt. We ordered the meal on arrival. In spite of our late arrival and repeated delays, the owners had a brilliant meal with accompanying lovely bottle of wine waiting for us. It was among our favorite meals in Paris and we had loads of spectacular food.
The owners provide a fantastic users guide to the apartment and the neighborhood that surrounds the apartment, which notes their favorite eateries and food shops. Very helpful.
The owners were thoughtful to include several European region Children's Blu-ray movies for our use during our stay. We were quite grateful as there was a day or two that the kids needed that bit of downtime after very active days of walking and playing in Paris.
If you are traveling with family, Jason and alain are very accommodating. The kids loved walking along the nearby canal where they could find loads of bottle tops! If you're looking for a romantic place to stay, this place fits the bill. Nice cafe downstairs, wine shop and bakery around the corner. Easy walk to great restaurants and metro. All in all, we are so glad we chose the Canal apt! We'll be back!Response from Jason Whittaker - 11/10/2011

Having returned from a delightful extended stay at the Canal apartment, we're able to join the unanimous, enthusiastic praise that this place & its owners have earned here on Flipkey over the past 18 months.
As others have said, the location is perfect, the unit charming & superbly outfitted, & the hosts Jason & Alain exemplary. The flat's many conveniences & space do enable the unique experience of actually "living in Paris," but this owes every bit as much to the owners' genuine graciousness & helpfulness: I feel as if we've come away from the whole deal with new friends, good friends. They were at all times respctful of our privacy, yet immediately available when any assistance was wanted. An enthusiasm for & knowledge of the city gave real authority to their many practical suggestions about every aspect of our time there. We were doubly impressed, moreover, by their curiosity about our own experiences: whenever we mentioned a restaurant they didn't know or a sight they'd not seen, they were eager to learn more, in order to build up an even more extensive set of references for future guests. Conscientious as well as professional, they made us feel at home & confident in our foreign setting.
Hooked in all respects, the flat affords a perfect base from which to experience this magnificent city & all its many treasures. While we've had the good fortune to travel throughout Europe, Paris really is more a way of life than just another locale, so it's especially important that anyone who hopes to discover just what makes it so special has a proper context from which to take it all in, & the apartment offered us just this. We share the sentiments of the other reviewers who want to return, but do them one better by already having made our reservations for a repeat stay. If that doesn't confirm our glowing endorsement of this great unit, nothing can!Response from Jason Whittaker - 06/24/2011

I was well received upon arrival and the apartment had everything i needed for my stay. Thank you again Jason.Response from Jason Whittaker - 06/01/2011

Thank you!
It's funny how some people wonder whether our area is well connected. They don't realise how compact Paris is and how close we are to the centre anyway!
Thanks for taking the time to say nice things about us :-)

Left on 03/05/2011 for a stay in February 2011
We recently made our first visit to Paris and were lucky to find this lovely quaint apartment to stay in. I did not have much communication with Jason (that was handled by my travel companion) however when I did get the chance to speak with and meet Jason I found everything I heard to be accurate. He was very nice, helpful and willing to assist with any questions and concerns we had.
I found this walk up apartment to be a very comfortable place that fit the two of us well without feeling cramped and lacking personal space.
The shower was a little on the small side but I think that's just the difference you should expect when traveling abroad. The DVD player required a little patience but once you figured it out you were defintiely able to enjoy a movie with surround sound :). I really have nothing negative to say about this place.
The location was close to many eating locations and entertainment, the market was right down the street which was very convenient. The subway system was very close by and easy to use, that's really how we got around with out getting lost once :).
I hope to make it back to Paris and when I do this is definitely where I would stay again as long as it's available. I'll take comfortable "home away from home" living over some sterile impersonal hotel any day!Response from Jason Whittaker - 03/06/2011

Lovely review. Thank you!
Glad that someone has finally mentioned the surround sound! Perhaps I'm just too much of a geek, but I love it :-)

We really enjoyed our time in the Canal apartment, the location is very good and easy access to the subway system, local shops and places of interest. We checked out several live performances at nearby night spots on the weekend and made the rounds of all the sights of Paris easily by day.
Jason and his team were very accommodating and professional and just a pleasure to work with. Communication was top notch & informative, without being at all intrusive, the room was well stocked with the necessities and plenty of space for two people to spend a week or two without feeling cramped at all.
The DVD system was somewhat finicky and the shower was not built for very large people, but otherwise I can't say anything negative about this place.
Hotels be damned, this is where I am staying if it is available the next time I visit Paris! There is just something so authentic and refreshing about this quaint little apartment which you just can't get in some big antiseptic hotel.Response from Jason Whittaker - 03/05/2011

Thanks for the kind review!
I love the bit about "Jason and his team"; you make it sound like an international operation, but it's actually just me and Alain!
The DVD/Blu-ray system is a bit slow, but there are full (simplified) instructions that hopefully make it easy to use if you arm yourself with patience.
As for the shower, it's a standard cubicle. Perhaps they are bigger in the 'States? Lucky you didn't stay at the Great Apartment (our other place) where space really is reduced!
Anyway, glad to hear that we helped make your stay in Paris enjoyable. Come back and see us again!

A stylish, comfortable and restful retreat in a great location with excellent dining and to-die-for bakeries literally steps away. The design is boutique-hotel-stylish meets classic Paris. Having become accustomed to tiny Parisian hotels rooms, this apartment gave us a luxurious sense of space and comfort. The kitchen is genuinely usable; we prepared several full meals with ease. The owner/manager, M. Whittaker was attentive and helpful in getting us situated, then allowing us to enjoy a sense of living in, rather then visiting Paris. I could not have picked a better place to stay in Paris. This was my 4th time in this amazing city, but my first time staying in an apartment rather than a hotel. I wish I had discovered apartment hire earlier!
I travelled with my husband and 4 month old for a month in Europe which included 5 nights at the beautiful Canal apartment.
Jason was delightful and helpful from the very first email contact. He kindly provided a portacot and let me into the apartment late one night when my husband accidentally left the keys at a friend's place.
The apartment itself is extremely clean and decorated in a quirky and stylish way. The lounge area is great and the comfortable couch converts to a very comfortable sofa bed (we are actually now looking at getting the same type of couch for our apartment at home!). There is plenty of space so we did not feel we were falling over our suitcases all the time, as you do in hotel rooms. The free wi-fi was a plus.
I have never been to the 10th before, but am now recommending it to everyone. The Canal apartment is way too close to the amazing bakery, Boulangerie du Pain et des Idées. We went there at least once a day which was not great for my post baby body! There is also a lovely restaurant around the corner called Les Enfant Perdus. The food was really good and the waiters were really friendly. If you know Sydney, I would equate the 10th to Surry Hills - a really great vibe.
I would not hesitate to recommend the Canal apartment.

The apartment has everything you need for a comfortable stay. Jason, one of the owners, is a friendly Brit so English is no problem. Everything about the place is quirky and lighthearted. There are many shops & restaurants nearby, and also a terrific park with good play areas for kids. Very cosmopolitan and interesting area near the canal. Easily accessible via the many close Metro stops. Negatives: up 2 flights of stairs so beware if you have mobility problems, & the shower is tiny. Can be a bit noisy if you leave the windows open but perfectly fine with windows shut. There's no cleaning fee but be prepared to clean at the end of your stay. Good value, especially the weekly rate. Recommended.

This 1 bedroom apartment is a gem!! We had the privilege of staying at the Canal apartments this September and had the perfect "feel" for living in Paris. The Metro is very close so you can make your way to anywhere in Paris in excellent time. There are many restaurants, bakeries and boutiques in the area and we enjoyed many of them...especially the pastries!! The canal had "locks" so it was enjoyable watching the boats passing through.
The apartment has everything you need to make your stay enjoyable. We even had milk in the fridge, fruit on the counter and a bottle of red wine waiting for us!!
From the beginning of booking online, until the end of checking out, the owner Jason, had everything down to perfection. We stayed 5 nights in this funky, clean and well equiped apartment. The owners, who live next door, were very accommodating to all questions and requests, both before and during the stay. Two things to note, though:
- advertised as 'on a quiet street', we noticed some noise, particularly scooters and late night people. Not a problem for us. Perhaps it should be advertised as 'generally a quiet street'.
- during an extremely hot spell, the apartment might be a little warm, although the owners are looking into providing a fan. There are three large windows that open (however, see 'noise' above).
All in all, though, very good value and great owners!Response from Jason Whittaker - 08/09/2010

Thanks for the honest review.
By saying "a quiet street" we are not trying to pretend that it's absolutely silent (we *are* in the heart of Paris after all), but I think most people will agree with you that it is "generally a quiet street".
Perhaps because the weather was warm you had the windows open (fair enough). We do have really great double glazing that keeps noise to a minimum...
And that fan is coming by the way. It's just that when I went to go and get one, everywhere had sold out!
Glad that you found us to be very good value, and thanks again for your honest opinion.

We have just returned from our sanctuary in Paris - do we miss it.
I had spent hours and hours online looking for suitable accommodation for myself, my husband and 8 month old son. Jason and Alain's site caught my eye and from the first e mail I received back from them, my search stopped instantly. Our correspondence was prompt, courteous and good-hearted. Likewise, their web site was interesting, informative and funny.
In relation to our stay - the apartment looked exactly like it appeared on the web - just brilliant; a really good mix of my kind of design sensibility, comfort and cool.
The location is a good example of what one might refer to as a 'best kept secret'. Having been in Paris many many times, this was an area I had no real knowledge of: Restful, quiet and easy to get around, it is also a nice half hour walk to the centre from here. We brought home Pain Des Amis from the ubiquitous Boulangerie Jason mentioned. We ate across the road at Celine and Maurice's the first night which was MAD but really enjoyable. The last night we spent at Les Enfants Perdues, amazing food and atmosphere, again, another one of the apartment's recommendations.
Jason and Alain went out of their way to make us as welcome and relaxed as possible. They had not had an infant to stay before and had kindly gone out and bought us a travel cot. They were under no obligation to do so. They also left behind both treats (devoured) and an easy to read reference information which we used like a bible.
They also left us a varied but appropriate batch of music and movies to liten to /watch.
I could go on and on but I may begin to sound like a relative or something. To summarise, I feel that had I not ventured too far away from my Canal Home, I wouldn't have felt like I had missed much. I came home very rested.
I completely recommend this apartment and area to anyone. And I certainly hope to be back very soon.Response from Jason Whittaker - 03/29/2010

with plenty of daylight and if you’ve had a long night out and wish to sleep
in just pull the curtains and you’ll be enveloped in a hermetic darkness. If
you like having the option of being near all the excitement of central Paris,
but would rather not lodging in it, then this set up is ideal. It was great to
have a night out on the town and then come back home above a peaceful
Rue des Vinaigriers. Public Transportation was conveniently located. The
Jaques Bonsergent metro stop is very close. No shortage of cafes and
bakeries nearby. A marché is just a few doors down. If you’re ever short on
coffee or other necessities, it’s a quick hop.
The owners Jason and Alain who live next door were very accommodating,
warm, easy going and fun. They know their city, so if you have any
questions just ask. They gave us several wonderful recommendations and
helped us get reservations at the excellent restaurant Derrière! I highly
recommend this place for any traveler looking for tranquility, beauty and
bustle. We’re looking forward to our next visit!

Thanks for the review!
It's true that we love our city, and we've spent quite a while exploring it, so I'm happy to give people tips when they arrive.
Part of visiting a city is finding stuff out for yourself, but a few pointers always come in handy.
Hope to have you back with us sometime soon!

Arlington, VABeautiful Experience
Left on 02/04/2010 for a stay in January 2010
Being a native French from Paris who has been living in the USA for 13 years, I am often disappointed everytime I book a hotel in Paris.
This time, I had a beautiful experience. The place is charming, very comfortable and cozy. It actually looks even better than in the photos. By Paris standard, the apartment offers plenty of space for two, even for four people. I like the separate dining/living room with the fire place. Inside it is very quiet (you do hear people talking through the bedroom wall a little bit), but the overall impression is one of a quiet space. The windows are amazing to block potential noises from the street, even though the street does not have much traffic. The double security system at the entrance is great and very convenient. The kitchen space is very cute and fully functional, including a half size dishwasher! Jason, who rents the place and lives next door, is so delightful. Just ask him anything about the neighborhood and you will end up for sure with great recommendations.
The place is located in a very quaint part of Paris, far enough from the center to be more quiet while still fairly close to St Michel. The canal St Martin was beautiful with the ice!
Tons of great restaurants, an amazing bakery. Walking distance 15 minutes to the RER (direct line to CDG).
Next time we come to Paris, we will not look anywhere else for lodging.
Thank you so much Jason and Alain for a truly amazing and relaxing experience.

Thank you!
The ice has gone from the canal now, and it's amazing in Spring and Summer. Plus, much of the canal areas is pedestrianised for Sundays, which makes it great for strolls.
Perhaps you'll be back to check it out?
Thanks again for the lovely review :-)

San FranciscoCharming, spotlessly clean & very comfortable.

I recently stayed at the canal apartment for a week and a 1/2 and was so
pleased that I chose to. The apartment is well appointed, spotlessly clean,
has charming decor and is conveniently located to a variety of attractions,
restaurants and the metro, and is easily within walking distance of the
center of Paris. There is the bonus of one of the best boulangeries in Paris
only a few blocks away.
Jason & Alain contributed thoughtful touches such as a bouquet of fresh
flowers, a bottle of wine and fresh fruit & milk in the fridge on my arrival.
The kitchen although small has all the amenities you would want; from
being fully stocked with pots & pans, a range of glassware, cutlery, plates &
bowls etc, through to a good sized refrigerator, oven & cooktop and even a
dishwasher.
The bathroom is small, but who cares when your in Paris; there's to much to
do to hang around in the shower all day!
The bedroom is comfortable and I slept well... a little too well on occasions
with blackout curtains & a comfy bed.
All in all I was extremely happy with my choice of the canal apartment and
would happily recommend it.Response from Jason Whittaker - 03/29/2010

Thanks so much! Glad you had a good time in the apartment, and - yes - that boulangerie is awesome!
Hope to see you back some time!

perth, western australiafeel like a local Parisian
Left on 01/25/2010 for a stay in November 2009
Staying at the apartment made for a perfect visit to Paris. Every detail had
been taken care of - from french DVDs to watch on the BluRay to freshly
ground coffee. The bed linens were gorgeous. The apartment itself was
immaculate and had all the amenities we required - and then some. The
location was ideal to see the sights while also feeling like a local Parisian. It
was an easy trip from CDG as well as to the heart of Paris. Jason and Alain
could not have been more helpful – providing trusted advice on things to do
that you would never find in a guide. Our dinner on arrival was a great way to
start out our stay and the meal was absolutely delicious. Can’t wait to come
back.Response from Jason Whittaker - 03/29/2010

MilanLovely apartment, with all you need...

... for a pleasant stay!
The apartment is located in a very quiet street a few meters from the Canal and 5 minutes walk from 2 Metro stations. The neighbourhoods are nice, with small shops and lots of bars, restaurants and brasserie.
It's quite easy and fast to reach the city center with the metro.
The apartment is very well furnished, with a small kitchen (but with all the features, from dish washing machine to microwave).
Everything was brand new and clean. The cosy atmosphere gives you a warm welcome since the beginning.
Jason is a perfect host, very kind but respectful of your privacy.
We really suggest this place to a family like ours (with 2 kids), but also to a couple because it's quite romantic!
