Additional Location Information
Today the Ile Saint Louis has become a highly residential area and a privileged destination and those looking for a romantic visit or who are impassioned about history looking for a Paris that is both elegant and authentic.
In general, the island retains its reputation as a home for the upper class. The permanent owners tend to be wealthy, comfortably settled, and of an older generation that keeps to itself, observing from a distance. However, while Ile Saint-Louis remains uniquely calm compared to the rest of Paris, it has not all together escaped the rise of tourism, especially in recent years.
In spring and summertime people from around the world come to explore the tiny shops, the peaceful and romantic quays, and of course the views on the city it has to offer. The most popular attractions are certainly the original (and still functional) site of the famous home made Berthillon ice cream and the western point of the island near the Pont Saint-Louis which joins the island to the Ile de la Cité. The cafés in this area are often filled to capacity with people-watchers and sight-seers savouring both the view of Notre-Dame and a cone of Berthillon.
Stairway access leads to the lower, tree-shaded quays. Those that gather there range from musicians, to lovers, to those just reading a book or feeding the ducks that swim close to shore, protected by the island. This attests to the fact that, despite its development, the island has not lost its original function as a place for people to gather and relax in company with the Seine.
Whereas the peripheral ring formed by the quays is, in general, home to the numerous 17th century Hôtels Particuliers (noble town houses), the inner streets, most notably the sort of "main street" running the length of the island called Rue Saint-Louis-en-l'Ile, are host to more commercial venues.
Throughout its history the island has always been known for its artistic richness. Even today anyone walking down this main street would be overwhelmed by the barrage of artists' galleries that specialize in anything from sculpture to painting to glass making to handcrafted jewelry. Occasionally you may be lucky and catch a private exhibition.
Small specialty shops play an important part in the commercial atmosphere on Ile Saint-Louis. Artistic clothing stores display their colourful and sprightly creations with pride, as do the toy shops carrying novelties, children' games, and puppets (especially the magnificent puppet shop "Clair de Rêve"). A handful of bookshops scattered around Ile Saint-Louis invite strollers to peruse their collections on history, archaeology, travel, and Paris' cultural heritage. And here and there you'll find shops specializing in goods from regions around the world including East Asia and Tibet.
Food is largely present on Ile Saint Louis. All the speciality shops for daily life can be found right on the main street: butcher shops, a bakery, creamery, wine shop, cheese shop, and of course a florist providing dinner table decoration. There are also a few gourmet food shops which sell high-priced, typically French products such as tea, jams, honey, and mustard.
Where food is concerned, however, the main focus lies in the restaurants. Eating on Ile Saint-Louis can be as basic or as luxurious as you choose. There are creperies and bistros serving everyday fare with the occasional freezer case of Berthillon tucked in the corner. In addition, you'll find a few middle-of-the-road restaurants serving traditional French food in an old-fashioned "gaulois" atmosphere, and one Japanese sushi bar, "Isami", which dots the Quai d'Orléans near the Rue de Deux Ponts. But if you prefer a truly excellent meal, the Orangerie and Mon Vieil Ami are gastronomic specialists that will delight the palate and are the perfect place to celebrate an occasion.
Currently, the island's existence is both contrasting and paradoxical. While the surrounding banks explode with city life, mobs of people, and avenues congested with traffic, the island seems to escape this hustle and bustle, resembling a small town rather than a booming metropolis. At the same time, the island remains at the historical, cultural, and physical centre of Paris, only minutes from some of the most well known monuments, museums, and places of interests. Ile Saint-Louis is both at the very heart of the city and removed from it in mentality.
Those that come to this unique place range in their characteristics from humble to bourgeois, French to international. They are both tourists and long-time, permanent residents. All those who come are drawn there because of its exceptional history, charm, and tranquillity. A package that has delighted for centuries and will surely continue to do so well into the future.

Scottsdale, Az USAOur Home in Paris!
Left on 05/20/2012 for a stay in May 2012
My girlfriend and I stayed an absolutely perfect week at Mark's apartment. Be prepared to feel at home! Mark was quick to answer all our questions and provided easy directions- we found the studio as easily as if we had been locals. Understanding payment and deposit rules for apartments in Europe can be complicated. Not so with Mark- it was seamless. Cozy, well appointed and with all the amenities. The bed was so comfortable, with fluffy pillows and comforter. The bathroom was clean and the shower provided plenty of hot water. Just a few minutes walk to 2 Metro stations (St. Michele and Hotel de Ville) get you anywhere in Paris you want to be. A quick walk gets you to St. Regis for a petite dejeuner or coffee, or Berthillon for an ice cream. Steps away from our door is a small supermarket for the things you forgot, produce, wine and necessities. A few more steps finds a wonderful cheese shop, a boulangerie, candy shop, olive oils and spices and boutiques. Don't forget to head south a little to a lovely pastries shop for fabulous Croissant de amandes and Pains aux Chocolate. We found the locals to be kind, helpful and a "S'l vous plait, Merci, Au revoir" goes a long way. You just can't go wrong here!
Merci, Mark! See you on our next visit!

My husband and I really enjoyed our 5 nights in Paris. Mark's studio is absolutely perfect and he's thought of everything (umbrellas, hair dryer, cds, books, etc). Size and decor is accurately represented in photos. It's a sunny space, getting a lot of natural light. His instructions to access the building and studio were very concise. He was very quick to respond to emails, and very helpful with tips and recommendations. The location was so convenient to everything - both walking and metro stops. Loved the boulangerie around the corner (and started every morning off there). The city was beautiful, even through the rainy spring days.

My husband and I stayed in this quaint apartment 4/19 through 4/25. It is in the most perfect location. Charming street, friendly grocer and bakery, lovely shops. The apartment was very quiet and comfortable. The bed slept wonderfully for two, the shower was excellent, and the little kitchen was helpful. At the end of a day in Paris, this apartment was a wonderful place to come home to. We would definitely stay here again and now consider Ile Saint Louis to be our neigborhood when in Paris.

St. Louis, MissouriAn idyllic retreat on Ile Saint-Louis
Left on 03/25/2012 for a stay in March 2012
My husband and I stayed in Mark's studio from March 18-23, 2012. The apartment was exactly as pictured---romantic, cozy, & clean. In a word, it was idyllic. If you want something modern and edgy, look elsewhere--this studio is all about charm. Guests should know in advance that it is a very small space, but my husband and I found it perfect for 2 people. The price point was great and it had all of the amenities we needed. We were happy to find a blow dryer, iron/ironing board, kitchen dishes and accessories, extra towels, blankets, and even a cd player with a nice selection of cds. The kitchenette was my favorite part of the studio because we loved being able to make our own breakfasts and coffee each morning. We went to the supermarket around the corner and stocked up on a few basics for the week. There are also two boulangeries less than a minute's walk way where we got our baguettes and baked goods. There is a cheese shop, wine shop, and lots of great restaurants and boutiques on the street as well. Not to mention both gelato and Berthillon ice cream! Everything we needed was just a short walk away. On top of the charming studio, Ile St. Louis was the perfect location for us. It is very central and seems to be a very coveted area for tourists and locals alike. The area was very safe (two codes to enter the building) and the local shopkeepers were friendly and welcoming. We can't say enough good things about our stay and Mark's hospitality.

I loved staying at Mark's studio apartment. It was clean, the kitchen was just right for our needs, lots of hot water in the shower (unlike my last trip to France), a great place to get out and run, plus close to the Metro, and all the attractions of Paris. We loved hanging out on the Island, visiting the restaurants and shops very close to our door. The bed was wonderfully comfortable. I would certainly stay there again.

This is my first room rental experience here in airbnb, and it was extremely gratificating. Since my very first contact, Mark was very kind and gave me lots of detailed informations from his flat and even from Paris, all of them were precise, usefull and easy to understand. The flat is so lovely and cozy, and has literally everything you will need for a calm and restfull stay, from books to kitchen utensils, and a great wi-fi. The location is simply perfect. I really recommend this flat and I am really intending to rent it again every single time I come back to Paris. Mark, thank you very much for contributing to this great time I had in Paris!

This 3rd floor walk-up apartment was in an outstanding location, we never took a single cab in 4 days in the city, just walked or took the Metro everywhere. It's a cozy space, but much bigger than your average hotel room with tons of charm. We visited a grocery store in the same block to stock up on yogurt and cheese / baguette for breakfast, then spent our days wandering the beautiful Parisian streets. I'd stay there again in a heartbeat!

A wonderful place to stay while in Paris with a perfect location just minutes from so many sights and multiple metro lines. We found everything we needed on the island with a quiet, cozy atmosphere both on the island and in the apartment. Beautifully maintained apartment and an owner who is always ready to help with an unexpected issue, our stay was wonderful!! I have friends ready to book this apartment for their trips. A home away from home in Paris!

My husband and I stayed in this studio and it was fantastic. It was in a great location - very close to the metro, RER, good places to eat and cute places to shop. It was very charming and a perfect getaway. We also really appreciated the fast internet connection, the quick working heater and the good water pressure. Paris was a wonderful city to explore and we'd recommend Mark's place to friends.

Left on 11/07/2011 for a stay in October 2011
My husband and I stayed here during our honeymoon, and it was exactly what we were looking for! The studio is in a great central location that puts you in the heart of Paris. It's less than a five minute walk from Pont Michel metro station (with an easy transfer at Châtelet). We were easily able to walk to the Nôtre Dame, St-Germain district, and the Louvre as a result. On the same street, there is a fromagerie, boucherie, small supermarket, BNP Paribas (ATM), boulangerie, and a few wine stores, as well as La Cure Gourmande candy/cookie shop and Berthillon ice cream. Trumilou is just across the river if you're looking for a hearty French bistro. Mark was very helpful and prompt in answering all our questions, and we felt very welcomed. Because the studio faces an inner courtyard (with red geraniums growing in the French windows), it is very quiet and we were able to get lots of privacy and rest. We had no problems with any of the wifi, television, electricity, or heating. More than enough linens and towels were all included, as well as extra blankets, enough dishes, glassware, and place settings for four, and even a tea set. The bed was very comfortable, and we had two fluffy pillows each. There's more than enough light in the flat and we had a nice armoire/closet to be able to hang up dresses and shirts. The place was clean when we arrived, we could just leave our towels and blankets there and not worry about laundering them ourselves. The bathroom and kitchen are both modern and easy to use. Check-in and check-out were fantastically simple. All in all, a perfect small pied-à-terre! I would highly recommend it, and would definitely stay here again in the future.
