Charming garret in the hearth of the ancient Paris
6th Arrondissement Luxembourg, Ile-de-France (Paris Region), France
(Property location is approximate) ?
What's Nearby:
Additional Location Information
Here some information about the neighborhood of our apartment and 6 arrondissement
Paris is divided in many different arrondissements (a kind of boroughs).
The most important and the best known are 6th, 7th, 8th and 16th arrondissement.
The 6th arrondissement is considered the most ancient and precious arrondissement in Paris.
The mayor of Paris has declared the 6th arrondissement the ONLY protected area in Paris.
The 6th arrondissement is plenty of historical places.
Many important artists, philosophers, poets have been living in that area. Spot points of their past are visible in most of street, coffee shops, brasseries.
Pablo Picasso has been living in Rue des Grands Augustins for 19 years. In the same street were living the Delunays and Apollinaire.
The “Deux Magots” is very famous for having had guests like J P Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir.
The “Flore” for the “Nouveaux Philosophes”
The “Procope” for having had guests like Voltaire and Diderot.
King Louis XIII has been crowned in Rue des Grands Augustins.
Medici Palace is in Luxembourg Gardens.
The museum of “La Monnaie” is in 6th arrondissement.
The museum Théodore Géricault is in the 6th arrondissement, place Furstemberg.
The museum “D’Orsay” is between 6th and 7th arrondissement.
The famous Pont Neuf, Place St. Michel, the Roman SPA, Boulevard St. Germain, Boulevard St. Michel, the “Conciergerie” of Marie Antoiniette are only some of the beautiful places you can see in the 6th arrondissement.
All Paris is beautiful but only few arrondissement are plenty of history and only the 6th arrondissement is the history of Paris, history from the beginning, from the last battle of Vercingetorix army against Cesar army (this battle was fought in the area of St. Germain des Près). In the same Church (St. Germain des Près Church), that, of course you can visit, two thousand years later, was celebrated the funeral of Oscar Wilde.
The same area is described from LF Céline, E Hamingway, Robbe Grillet, Simone de Beauvoir, and, just for curiosity, from all the poets belonging to the Beat Generation who were living between Pont Neuf and Pont St. Michel.
Notre Dame de Paris is 300 meters far from Pont St. Michel.
The Louvre is 200 meters far from Pont Neuf.
If you look for a Greek restaurant, a Russian restaurant, an Italian restaurant or, like it should be, a good or a gourmet famous French restaurant, then you found the right place.
The best restaurants in Paris are in 6th arrondissement (also in 5th and 1st arrondissement).
All the area is sparkling in the night and day time with the ancient bookstores, antiques shops, bouquinistes, local markets. A night out, after the restaurant, is a special night because you can find jazz bars and special nightclubs and more restaurants open all the night.
It’s impossible to walk in the 6th arrondissement without being fascinated from the fine art galleries, fashion shops, trend furniture shops, special brasseries like Lipp, special “promenades” along the river Seine, where the “Peniches” will guest you sitting by the water in front of the magnificent buildings of 18th Century.
You can also walk, if you like, along the river towards the Tour Eiffel. There you can find all the Architecture from 13th to 20th Century, all famous and historical buildings, the Grande Esplanade, the Musée de l’armée and, on the other side of the river the Louvre, Les Tuleries, les Champs Elysées until the Arc du Triomphe.
But in the 6th arrondissement you can also find famous jewellers, historical markets, the way to the St. Sulpice Church, and the famous small streets that were saved from Haussmann, when Paris was made new, like you can see it now.
Paris, the Paris sang from Edith Piaf and Luis Armstrong is all there, where the Odeon Theatre is. Paris the romantic and the authentic, Paris des ‘chansonniers’, Paris of the Sorbonne, Paris of the ancients orders of monasteries, Paris the unforgettable is ONLY there, in the 6th arrondissement.
So now you know, what you are looking for.

There is not enough I can say to impart the joys of our experience in this lovely apartment. There are a lot of steps to get to the apartment but every step is worth it. It is lovely and well maintained and has such a wonderful location. It was a pleasure working with Grey on his rental. He was so helpful and helped us in every way. A list of restaurants and groceries, which train or bus to take and which stop to use to make the fastest and easiest transport to the apartment. I would encourage anyone to stay in this apartment and would hope they appreciate the age and beauty of the place. Thank you for such a lovely holiday.

This was the perfect place to stay for a family of five--mom and dad, two kids, and their 77-year old grandmother. Grandma was undaunted by the 110 steps as they are low rise steps and easy going. The apartment is cozy, well-appointed, and very comfortable. As a matter of fact, we found the pull-out sofabed to be the most comfortable! The kids especially enjoyed watching the changing lights of the Eiffel Tower at night from the apartment windows. We ate our breakfasts and a couple of dinners in the apartment after shopping at the local markets, and you simply cannot beat the location as you're within walking distance to The Louvre, Notre Dame, Saint Chappelle, and so many other sites. The closest metro stop, St. Michel, is very convenient and is on the main lines to the Eiffel Tower, Versailles, and just two stops from Gare du Nord. The owner gave us superb directions to get there, instructions to get inside (very secure), and good ideas for dining and shopping. In spite of the steps, this was a great find!

Great apartment in Paris. We loved the location -- close to museums, Notre Dame, restaurants, the Seine. Yes, there are 110 steps to the top, but with good planning, you don't need to make that trip very often.
The apartment was exactly as described. The reservation arrangements were very easy to make, and the owner was extremely helpful and gracious. There is WiFi in the apartment and a small television. There is also a large grocery store a few blocks away.
You will not find a better bargain in a downtown Paris neighborhood.Response from Grey.mc - 02/05/2013

This loft in the heart of Paris provides the perfect location for a Paris holiday. The 112 steps can seem a bit daunting at first, especially when you're hauling up luggage and groceries, but you soon get used to it. We were there with our adult children who liked to keep different hours from us so it was easy enough for everyone to come and go as they pleased. A little bit crowded at times, but location trumped any problems. Owner was very helpful in making suggestions about local restaurants and services.

L'appartamento è esattamente come descritto.
Consigliatissimo!
The apartment is exactly as described.
Very clean,in the center of Paris, hospitable, and provided of all.
The subway is less than 5 minute walk (if you walk slow).
There is an information office in 3 minutes away from the house.
And the area is full of restaurants for all budgets, shops, cafes, bars, pubs.
There is a Carrefour (supermarket) near the palace.
Mr. Grey is really kind, and gave us many useful information .
The building is very old, and is important not cause noises walking in the apartment with shoes (for the neighbors! They advise us that the building is very old and for this the noises are very strong, though it seems!)
The steps to do are several to get to the attic, but after the initial "shock" you get used quickly.
So, when I will return (Paris is wonderful) in Paris,i will return in the apartment of Mr. Grey.
Highly recommended! -

Our group of 3 adults and 3 kids absolutely loved this property. It was so wonderful to step off the Metro and see Notre Dame everyday and then only have a couple of blocks to get to this apartment. Charming definitely is the word for it! We enjoyed the many delicious restaurants and coffee shops located within an easy walk as well as the ease to reach other locations by Metro. We look forward to going back and staying again!

Tripping aroud Europe with my wife daughter and 80 year old Mother and Father inlaw. Cant say they were impressed when I said I had booked an appartment in paris with 100 steps. That is untill they got there the climb was easy even for the old timers and the appartment was "Paris" to a tee. Coming back to the appartment after a days site seeing was like coming home. We slept on the futon which was very comfy. The Kitchen is small but fine for breakfasts and lunches there is so many fantastic restaraunts around we rarely ate in the appartment anyway although we did have a great afternoon eating french bread cheeses and wine as we soaked up the atmosphere of this charming appartment. Gray was great to deal with, location excellent, would definately recommend. Just a tip I'm well over 6 foot tall and constantly bumped my head on the low beams but thats because I'm a clutz it's not the appartments fault.

What a superb location! I loved the old building, and it was quiet at the top!! It was easy to work out booking details, and the owner was responsive. They had some great tips for restaurants and tour ideas. Of course, you will have to climb stairs, but that's part of the experience. If you can walk the streets of Paris, tour museums, view historic sites, walk the catacombs, shop, and find cafes and restaurants, you can climb stairs. The arc de Triomphe had more stairs!! We were a family of 4, 1 adult son and a 1 teenager. I think this is a great place for small families with children who are 8 and up, teens, friend groups, and some older travelers in their 50's and 60's who are game for exercise! Also, the washer worked out very well for us. Overall, we had a very good experience in this vacation rental. Exploring the city, and coming back to the apartment to recharge, worked out well. The left bank has so much to offer, we didn't finish fully exploring it. Paris requires multiple visits!

This apartment was in the best location a person could ask for in Paris. It was so quaint and we felt very safe. There were 5 of us in the apartment, it was a cozy fit that worked just fine. As long as you prepare yourself for the walk up/down 4+ flights of stairs (with luggage) you won't be disappointed. It was well worth it not to mention great exercise after all of the wonderful food we enjoyed in Paris. I hope to return to Paris soon and would definitly return to this apartment.

The booking and information all done through e-mail was very easy and we found the apartment/keys from the instructions given. The cleaner allowed us to leave our cases a little earlier than agreed which was vey helpful. The area is lovely, 1 minute from the river and we found good shops and restaurants locally. The apartment is in a beautiful building and was as described on the internet. It was in fact a little bigger than I had expected with plenty of storage space and the 5 of us were very comfortable. Everything we needed was there, it was very clean and we had a lovely time in our little home from home.

We stayed in mid-January - we only had a few days in Paris this time. The apartment was ideal for us, as our teenage children had their own sleeping areas. We like the area too, it'seasy walking to many attractions along with good shopping, and the local Odeon subway is nearby too. Didn't find the stairs too much trouble, and the apartment itself although comparatively petite, is well-equipped and has everything needed to make a comfortable stay, which we had! The contact and information we had from the owners was accurate, helpful and informative, and very friendly. We'd recommend it to others, and would happily stay again ourselves.

Spent a week in January 2012 with my wife and teenage daughter. The garret was comfortable and the location was fantastic. The owners were very easy to deal with and most helpful. great recommendations for restaurants...
Was able to walk to almost everything we wanted to see and rarely had to use the Metro. Lots of interesting little shops and galleries in the area.
If your interested in museums, then the 6 day paris museum pass was well worth the 65 Euro. Was able to fast track some of the queues. -

Left on 08/06/2011 for a stay in June 2011
The location was great. Whilst we knew there was no lift we were surprised at how many steps there were up to the apartment especially as we were travelling with two elderly ladies. Lighting in stairwells was very poor & felt quite dangerous at times. Amenities were comfortable. One key didn;t work well which caused difficulties & not being able to contact Grey as soon as we arrived as the apartment hadn't been cleaned was a problem. Once we did contact him issues were resolved quickly which we appreciated.

Firstly dealing with Manuela & Grey was a pleasure. They made the whole process very easy and answered every question. You cannot ask for more. The garret is exactly as shown in the photographs and we immediately felt at home.
The location of this gem is superb, it so easy to get about Paris from here. There are numerous restaurants just yards from your front door and of a good quality. As the Seine is a stone throw away, we used the boat bus to explore Paris and this made the whole experience very pleasant. If there is a drawback it would have to be the 102 steps to the garret, however we are in our sixties and after a couple of times I felt like a new man or so says my wife! On the plus side it is a very peaceful and quiet apartment with a charming court yard. -

Grey and Manuela have the perfect spot on the left bank, St Germain. You will be so charmed by this 17th century building. The apartment is also large for Paris apts. View of the top of the Eiffel tower from bedroom, bathroom and kitchen. Easy to get to from airports- take the RER, off at Notre Dame. Apartment is about 500 meters from there. Yes off at Notre Dame!! Could you ask for a better location? Please be aware there are about 100 steps to the top of the building, to apartment. It's really not a big deal but something to consider. No lift. Also, you must respect the neighbors at this location. Nice people, and they don't want to be woken up late night. Easy rules to follow though. When I head back to Paris, I will most definitely contact Grey and Manuela to book this location. I'm really not sure you can do better than this spot. oh! and we slept 5 women here. That's saying a lot for space :)

Good: view of apartment tops, very European feeling, courtyard is pretty, comfortable, location was less than 1/2 mile from metro stop, almost right on the Seine with lots of good restaurants around
Bad: Not a 3 bedroom but a 2 bedroom with a futon in the living room, no toilet paper so we had to go buy a few household items ourselves, 110 steps to the flat, dryer is a rack unless it was an all in one and we couldn't figure out the dry part, lights for going upstairs were completely out one night which meant we had to climb the 110 stairs in pitch black but it is an old buildingResponse from Grey.mc - 04/01/2011

Flipkey gave me the opportunity to reject this witness. I accepted because I want everybody knows and can be aware of my politeness.
Thank you anyway.
Hi you all,
Sorry to hear that.
But:
1) First of all I don’t know this lady. The 3/1/2011 in the flat there was my daughter. So she is making a mistake. But I understand she is so upset that she cannot remember when she was there.
2) I am always very kind with all people staying there. I recommend to everybody: if something wrong please let me know: I didn’t receive any call from anybody.
3) I always ask the name of people staying in the flat and the name of this lady is not within my guests.
4) I never say that there are 3 bedrooms and a lunge. I always say: 2 bedrooms and a lunge with a sofa bed (please check the site). After that the sofa bed is not a futon: possibly this lady doesn’t know the difference between a futon and a sofa bed. This sofa bed, in particular, was paid 6,000 Euros and it’s extremely comfortable. So, before speaking, please, check what is written in the site.
5) Regarding the steps they are 101 and not 110 (this was certified by my good friend Professor Tom Brialawsky (Professor of Mathematics at the North Carolina University). Well… something is something.
6) Regarding the light in the stairs can happen to everybody and it’s not my fault.
Furthermore I’m really upset to hear what this lady says because I’m a very kind person always available and extremely flexible. So, because I didn’t receive any call from this lady and I don’t know her, indeed, I have to understand that she was upset for other reasons reversing her anxiety on me and my flat.
7) As everybody can see on the site of Flipkey it’s written that no hair dryer is provided. If there was one hair dryer it was left from a client possibly. I don’t like to let hair dryers because they are too delicate instruments, in my opinion.
8) The wash-dryer machine is new: just read instructions, please.
9) The cleaner is a very clean person, very accurate. It’s possible she forgot top up some toilet paper and I will point on it.
My flat is in one of the best place in Paris. It’s 2 bedrooms flat very quiet. Please check the previous witnesses. Everybody is thanking me for the stay, EVERYBODY. I repeat that I always say with my costumers to call me if something wrong and any problem, for me is a commitment to be recovered.
So, Dear Charlotte, that I don’t know, you don’t need to recommend to anybody my flat because if you find a flat like mine in centre of Paris you have a great chance.

Left on 02/27/2011 for a stay in February 2011
I want to echo the other excellent reviews for this apartment. Every contact with Manuela and Grey leading up to the visit was timely and very cordial. The walk up to the 5th floor (sixth for you americans :) ) was great exercise (and the stairs themselves are unique). The apartment is well equipped. If you are over six feet tall (1.9 meters) be prepared to duck and stand a little sideways in the shower :) Wifi access was great, and essential as it isnt quite as readily available as here in the States. The neighborhood could not possibly be more convenient. Excellent restaurants, bistros, brasseries, boulangeries, patisseries, and shopping, shopping, shopping all within 500 meters. We jogged over to the Louvre and the Musee d'Orsay after daily sightseeing. 50 meters to the Seine. You can't get a better value than this great apartment. Thank you Manuela and Grey!

Brisbane, AustraliaThe Classic Parisian Garret
Left on 02/02/2011 for a stay in December 2010
Well - what a place! This must be one of the most ingeniously refurbed genuine garrets in Paris - shades of La Boheme for me! Perfectly strategically placed situation for all of your central city sights, very close to Metro, Latin Quarter eateries, etc. Extremely well appointed & equiped for a comfortable homely stay. The owners, Manuela & Grey Barone, are charming people who were most helpful to us. They, apparently, did most of the decor, etc, themselves & frequently stay there themselves - so it really is like a "home".
Maybe,, I should just make special mention of the intriguing pair of paintings in the loungeroom, which Manuela painted herself & I leave you to work out the meaning if you can!!!
All of the superlatives in the Tripadvisor descriptor are accurate & you will, therefore, get exactly what you hoped you would expect. I have to say though, as a 75yo & being fairly tall I found all the stairs rather tiring & the slope of the roof (particulary in the shower) unexpectedly intrusive - but, what else should you really expect in an authentic Paris Garret I suppose?? Consequently, I do strongly recommend the place to anyone seeking the real Paris experience of their life - the "magic" of the city will be well & truly enhanced by the "magic" of the accomodation & you will, therfore, experience a uniquely unforgettable holiday. -

The location was excellent for walking to the major attractions or catching the Metro at St Michel station. Lots of restaurants and cafes in a friendly, village atmosphere. The France Tourisme office around the corner was a bonus. We didn't realise there was no lift and carrying the luggage up 110 steps was hard work! Apartment was just right for 4 adults, the sloping walls making it seem smaller than it actually is, and the views are great. Thank goodness for the extra toilette! We enjoyed our stay here very much.

The value for money is impressive. The apartment is not the latest in luxury but that is easily overcome by the quality of the location. As tourists our money was better spent on other things than the place we stayed at, mainly used to sleep. The apartment is a little small but can accomodate two couples easily, the additional guests having to use the living/dining room as a bed room. The place is quiet and mattresses of quality, an important aspect of any good relaxing vacation!

What a fantastic place to stay. We would highly recommend this apartment. It was so close to the Notre Dame, Louvre, Hop on Hop off Buses, Seine River, Subway, Restaurants, Shopping Etc. The apartment was ideal for our family of 4. There was a few flights of stairs to go up as you would expect being an top floor apartment. It was clean, spacious and the beds comfortable. It was beautiful at night to look out and see the Eiffel Tower from the apartment. The washing machine was a bonus. Thank you for making our trip to Paris a memorable one.

Though we only stayed for 4 days we really loved the apartment. It has real garret character and is in a fantastic location both scenically and for convenience. There was a heatwave in Paris while we were there and the flat did get rather hot and humid, and it was a pity the small fan supplied didn't work. But that was a minor inconvenience and we'd definitely consider staying in the apartment again.
Worth a mention for prospective visitors are the hundred steps to the front door - quite shallow steps but actually around 110 altogether. The kitchen is very cramped and not really suitable for ambitious cooking. A visitors' book with useful local information would also have been helpful.
But those few points don't materially detract from this being an atmospheric, value-for-money apartment in an excellent location. I definitely recommend it.

Good communication via e-mail before we arrived with excellent and detailed instructions. easily accommodated 5 adults. Great location. For being in central Paris, very quiet. Good "neighborhood" feel and able to walk to neighborhood cafes, shopping as well as usual toursist attractions. Washing machine and internet access very nice. Ceilings somewhat low and lots of stairs! Had some trouble getting key to turn/open front door when first arrived, but got the hang of it quickly. Overall very nice eperience. Would stay here again when in Paris.

Myself and four other family members stayed in this lovely apartment which is perfectly located for exploring Paris. Saint Germaine and all its vibrant cafes and shops are just close by as is Notre Dame! We found a lovely restaurant too at the bottom of the street on which the flat is located - Rue des St augustines. The apartment is at the very top of a lovely old building which has a classic open square inside and beautiful old door. You have to climb quite a few stairs to get to the apartment so I wouldn't recommend it if you have difficulty with stairs. They are though very shallow and most people wouldn't bat an eye lid - but there is 123 or so of them! i would definitely stay here again - for 5 people it extremely good value for the location. I slept on the sofa bed which is very comfortable. You can see the Eifel Tower lit up at night too from the lounge window!

We had a very pleasant vacation in this apartment. The location truly could not be better - both central and quiet. There is enough space in the apartment to share it with grown children and maintain some privacy. Anyone with mobility problems should be aware there is no elevator.

The location made our stay. Right in the heart of Paris. Could not have asked for a better neighborhood - metro, places to eat, things to see. Could not have asked for anything better.
The apartment was great. It gave us a great point to base from and come back to. It really made the trip.Response from Grey.mc - 05/12/2010

Lovely flat right in the centre of Paris. The appartment is very quiet up in the fifth floor and features a splendid view over Parisian rooftops right to the Eiffel tower. We stayed there with two adults and three kids and it was very comfortable. The flat would easily house a sixth person. We liked it and would love to come back some day.
