Located just slightly off the beaten track, on the sunny side of Lake Arenal, this property offers everything a mountain traveller to Costa Rica could want. The vista includes beautiful Lake Arenal, part of the continental divide, and a huge sky view. In addition, the forest along side and just below the property is home to Howler monkeys, sloths and many colorful tropical birds. Located in the tiny and friendly pueblo of San Luis on Lake Arenal just minutes from the charming mountain town of Tilaran. In Tilaran there are banks, restaurants, churches and lots of small stores and fruit venders. The closest airport is in Liberia about an hour and a half away. San Jose airport is about 3 hours away.
This lovely tropical mountain setting is just 1km off the tourist track, yet easily accessible to many of Costa Rica's national parks. Arenal Volcano, Monteverde, Rio Celeste, Palo Verde, and Carara National Park, just to name a few, are all day trips from here. The village itself (San Luis) is home to some of the hardest working and friendliest people you will ever meet. A passer by will always smile and greet you with "Buenos", making you
feel right at home.

We spent four days at the Toucan cottage and had a lovely time. The cottage is very clean and nicely decorated. The kitchen has everything you need to prepare meals. There's a patio outside where you can have a romantic dinner or sit on the rocking chair enjoying the view of Lake arenal, watch the birds and listen to the howler monkeys. The owners, Michael and Marcy, are avid bird lovers and put food out every day for the birds. You'll be amazed at the number and variety of birds they attract. There's a nice walking trail nearby and you can easily do day trips to Monte Verde, the Tenorio Volcano National Park with its beautiful Rio Celeste, or drive around the lake to La Fortuna. This is one of the best values we found in Costa Rica.

This was our first visit to Costa Rica. The Toucan Cottage visit was the last stay on our 3 week itinerary. The owners Mike and Marcy were fantastic -- we had everything and more in the form of amenities in the cottage, right down to Marcy having very good, fresh ground Costa Rican coffee for us to make our morning pot! The cottage is spacious, super clean, modern bath & kitch(small but very functional) & very comfortable, a place we could relax. I even was able to catch up on a bit of laundry (needed after travelling for a few weeks!).We enjoyed the many birds that came to visit, the fabulous lake view, and the adorable Howler monkey family we were able to watch on a nearby hiking trail. Mike and Marcy were good sources of information on the birds & wildlife as well as what to see and do. Also, we were quite comfortable travelling to destinations in the area such as arenal Volcano and of course Santa Elena & Monte Verde. All were within an easy drive for a day's excursion and we were easily back in time for 4 oclock and bird feeding schedule! Thank you Mike and Marcy for giving us a warm welcome and a wonderful end to our all too short vacation. I am certain we will see you again!

This very spacious location is a hidden gem. Fine, fully equipped kitchen with windowed views, very spacious, modern bathroom, with additional outdoor shower, excellent closet space.Overhead and bedside lighting, private patio with seating, fantastic views, extremely quiet. If owners are in the main house they are supremely gracious and helpful. Parking available if you have a car, easy access to roadway for the bus or walking distance to local food and beverage. Taxi service nearby and reliable. Perfect for private getaway for 2 or excellent for a private workspace for a writer, thinker, photographer needing project space.Highly recommend this property.

We really enjoyed our stays at this cozy cottage overlooking Lake arenal. Besides the lake, there is the daily migration of all types of exotic birds and the playful howler monkeys frolicking in the trees. We found the people extremely friendly and eager to assist you if need be. The small town of San Luis is quaint with a few small stores. Any needs you have can be had in the large town of Tileran which is just ten minutes away. We have been to this property several times and just love it. The cottage is just right for two. It has a tiny but adequate kitchen, comfortable furnishings and a great patio to spend the time just relaxing or reading or best of all snuggling.
