Additional Location Information
A quiet residential hamlet approx 2 miles by road on the hill above Tintern Village and Tintern Abbey in the spectacularly lovely Wye Valley. The cottage has quiet neighbours. It is not isolated but the setting is private.
The location is very convenient. We are under half an hour by car from Motorway links M50/M5/M6 and from M48/M4 so therefore accessible all year. We are 2 miles above Tintern, the very Heart of the Wye Valley. The Wye Valley is officially designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty ( AONB) and the designation is well deserved. Sparkling rivers, walkable forests, fabulous wld and birdlife and clean air. But we are neither remote nor boring in all this greeness! To get the best from the area you need a car or a cycle though you can get here by train to Chepstow .. Guests enjoy walking on waymarked trails, exceptional golf on over 20 courses ( this was the home of the Ryder ,Cup 2010) canoeing, pony trekking, mountain biking. rope climbing , fishing and many more outdoor actvities. To add to that we are awash with history . Our brooding border Castles , museums ( including Nelson and Roman remains, ) and Churches will excite the imagination of old and young alike. We have three small vintage cinemas and several theatres and Monmouthshire is known as the food capital of Wales. Taste Wales at numerous award winning eateries, two with Michelin stars, and in the village there is a micro brewry and a vineyard so no need to be thirsty!.
Star attraction is Tintern Abbey, ruined by Henry VIII , immortalised by Wordsworth and Turner- and discovered afresh every morning by our guests as they marvel at its beauty ..

Five of us plus my dog stayed 4 nights to walk Wye Valley walk, April 15th-19th
The cottage is lovely, beautifully decorated. After walking all day it was great to relax in the hot tub!
We had a very warm welcome with wine, blackcurrant vodka and flowers. -

I generally don't believe in top rating properties because there will usually be something that lets it down slightly, even if I don't mention it in the review. In the case of Foxes Reach I have no excuse whatsoever to give below maximum.
Everything seems to have been thought of.
There are four bedrooms, two with TV, a bathroom and a shower room. Tv in each room downstairs (not that I watched any) including Sky on the main one. Internet that works and can be used throughout.
The highlight for me was the log burning stove bet the lads were more taken with the hot tub.
A fully equipped kitchen containing virtually every utensil you can think of.
There is nice private garden that, during the summer I am sure would be a great sun-trap.
To top it all the owners are so helpful, if you can't find the information about the cottage or the surrounding area in the bulging information packs you need only ask.
The surrounding area offers so much for the visitors, for me being reasonably close to Cardiff is a plus.
I could ramble on but I would suggest you stay there and find out for yourself.
A definite five star plus. -

We couldn`t find a single fault with this cottage. Everything you would need is provided, a real home from home. Location is perfect if you want to get away from it all but not too far away. The owners couldn`t be more helpful if you need them. Kids loved the hot tub it was constantly in use throughout the whole week. Would definetly recommend to anyone. 5 stars from us without a doubt

Left on 10/03/2012 for a stay in September 2012
Excellent, excellent, excellent! Chosen for our honeymoon retreat, we were not disappointed. We particularly liked the personal touches - welcoming drinks, fresh flowers in almost every room and a small card re our recent marriage (the card was much appreciated, especially as the owners were out of the country on their own holiday upon our arrival).
The cottage contains everything you could possible need to make your stay relaxing and enjoyable. The weather during our stay was not brilliant, but sat inside such a cosy cottage with a real fire glowing via the wood burning stove - who cares! The rain couldn't even dampen our spirits whilst sat in the lovely hot tub and having a glass of bubbly!
The location of the cottage provided a good base for all of the things we wanted to see and do in the Wye Valley & surrounding area, including a trip over the 'border' to Bristol and Weston-super-Mare. There is a 24 hour Tesco's in Chepstow (about 10-15 mins drive away) for all your food and drink wants.
So overall, a truly great place to stay to relax and unwind in peaceful and very quiet surroundings. We would definitely book again and would recommend to our family and friends. What more can we say! -

We just spent a lovely week (4 nights-Monday to Friday) with our two Norfolk terriers. Foxes Reach cottage is a lovely place to get away from all your stress and anxieties. The cottage is well maintained and tastefully decorated and in a great location (close to Tintern abbey). There are so many places to walk in the area and hard to chose which ones to take.
We had a very warm welcome to the cottage by Fiona. There was also a bottle of red wine and a homemade blackcurrent and vodka drink for us on arrival. The blackcurrent/vodka drink was very welcome after the 5 hour journey we had from North Yorkshire (7 hours going home). The cottage has everything you would ever need!
We recommend this wonderful cottage to anyone wanting to spend some relaxing time in the Wye Valley. -

We received a warm welcome when we arrived. Found the cottage easliy even though it is quite rural, via the very good directions in the pre-arrival info.
Cottage is cosy and lovely, the peace and quiet is priceless. The cottage has everything you could want, the owners have thought very hard about their guest's experience. Even though the weather wasnt very kind to us during out stay, it didnt stop us exploring the area. Lots to do and see. The hot tub was lovely to unwind at the end of the day.
Loved the cottage so much, we've booked to come again! -

The cottage was excellent and had all amenities. Particularly enjoyed hot tub which after walking was lovely for a soothing soak. Fantastic countryside and loads of beautiful walks and easy to get to Tintern, Monmouth and Chepstow as well as the Forest of Dean. A lot of little extras were left which we thoroughly enjoyed.

Had a fantastic stay here recently. The cottage is charming. The hot tub and traditional wood burner provide ingredients for an idyllic romantic or simply relaxing evening. Great location as well, as it's a very short distance from Tintern abbey. We were welcomed with a lovely bottle of wine and home made blackcurrant vodka. We also liked that the kitchen was well enough equipped for us to be able to cook our own dinners and make the most of spending time in such a beautiful cottage. Would recommend this as a place to stay to anyone. The only bad thing was not being able to check in until 4pm, as we were only staying for two nights and had to be ready to check out by 10am on the last day. Would have been great if we had been able to check in slightly earlier. Hoping to return again soon and hopefully for a longer stay.

Delighted you enjoyed your stay so much that we are already in touch about a return visit. Our check in/check out times are very much in line with the industry standard and are set because it takes a lot of time to clean , refresh and present and entire cottage to the high standards we maintain, plus we must empty refill and reheat the hot tub for you and we look after the garden and cut grass etc. We are up to 4 people flat out all day so cant go faster! Next time you come we suggest that you arrive in the locality earlier in the day and enjoy a pub lunch and some sightseeing before you come to us. You dont have to be with us right at 4, later after you have had a fun afternoon is fine. We look forward to welcoming you back!

The service was well managed from start to finish. The cottage exceeded expectations, which is so often not the case from brochures. The location is a real escape - we only had a short break but the holiday started the moment we arrived - plenty of walking on the doorstep and some great places to eat. The anchor at Tintern abbey became our favourite. Foxes Reach is a place we would love to make a second visit and perhaps for a bit longer!

There were 4 of us in my party and everyone thoroughly enjoyed their stay. It's in a superb location too - very peaceful and quiet and only 10-15 minutes from Chepstow. Have recommended to others and will definitely be returning!!!

Left on 02/13/2012 for a stay in February 2012
I hadn't realised I had booked a 5 star cottage, but what a delightful treat it was! From the personal welcome to the treats left for us it was fabulous. We especially booked because of the hot tub, which was delightful and made the evenings have that litle extra something. The cottage was well equipped with everything you would need for time away from home! The location was fantastic too, just far enough away to be idle nd quiet, but near enough that it wasn't a huge effort to get and visit places, we particularly enjoyed Tintern abbey and hade Sunday Lunch at the anchor. The only thing was the beds were a little squidgy, which us grown ups found too soft for our old bones and ached a bit in the morning, but other than that it was fine.
Having the shower downstairs is also good as it means that as you leave the hot tub, we were able to go straightto the shower and not drag ourselves allwet up the stairs.
We will certainly be making a return visit in the future.
On the downside, there was so much information to be passed to guests that we only read it on our last night, which meant we were then rushing around realising things we had to do so that we were no charged a cleaners fee! Small things like putting the bin at the top of the lane, putting all bed linen and towels in the laundry, sorting the recycling, and hoovering! I know some cottages do request this and it was not a problem to do it, but perhaps having the information displayed on a notice board would have been more prominant.Response from Monmouthshire Cottages - 02/13/2012

Thanks so much for this kind review. We are constantly changing the mattresses at the cottages as for every guest that says they are too soft there is one that says they are too hard! At Foxes Reach we do have deep luxury toppers over the mattresses so if you do indeed come again and ask us in advance we can remove them for you. Sorry you didnt have time to read the info we leave before the last moment- its perhaps the trouble with very short stays as yours was- never mind, better you chilled!( and thanks for leaving it nice!) We hope to welcome you again before too long -and maybe for a bit longer! With kind regards from us both

I already know Fiona and Malcolm so had high expectations of Foxes Reach but these were totally exceeded by the warmth of the welcome which my girlfriend and I received for our anniversary weekend. The welcome touches make you feel very special and like well regarded friends, and a great deal of care was taken in the presentation, from the invitingly laid dining table, and the fresh flowers in every room (fantastic lilies) to the roaring fire in the immense woodburner. The hot tub was perfect for champagne quaffing and star gazing on cold January nights (and for listening to the hooting of a tawny owl) and there are many footpaths to explore from the door (we went up into Ninewells Wood and back through the fields into Catbrook.) Foxes Reach really was, without any exaggeration, a perfect romantic getaway and we'd return at any time of year without any hesitation.

The bedding is very snuggly which is what you need at this time of year. The hot tub was wonderful, with the smell from the woodburner wafting in the breeze & amazing starry night sky. Locally the countryside and views are stunning . We have already visited Vanilla cottage which is also of the same high standard and look forward to visiting Tintern cottage in the future.

Foxes Reach is a traditional cottage on the outside but when you step through the door you step into modern, trendy luxury! We arrived on a wet Friday evening to a welcomed surprise of wine, flowers and an extra treat! The hot tub was an excellent addition to the cottage and a much welcomed treat after a long days walk. The log fire gave the cottage a warm cosy feeling. The cottage was clean and tidy and had everything we needed. We will definitely return next year.

We booked foxes reach for our honeymoon and Fiona was kind enough to prepare a little honeymoon hamper full of treats which was lovely. The two cocker spaniels came along too and enjoyed their 2-3 miles of walking a day and also a particularly energetic game of fetch in the beautiful garden.
Sky was a fab home comfort after long walks, as was the log burner. -

Having enjoyed our stay at Foxes Reach in 2010 so much we didn't hesitate to return again this year. We thought the cottage was perfect before but the owners, Fiona and Malcolm had made many changes to make it even better.
The location is ideal touring round this marvelous part of the country not to mention a bit of retail therapy in Cardiff!

We stayed at Foxes Reach, due to it's location and hot tub! However, the reviews swayed us as they all seem to be extremely good.
Malcolm's welcome was fantastic ( although bemused by the noise and energy that are my children!! ). With all of the extra touches the owners try extremely hard to ensure your holiday is special in both presentation and execution.
Location is ideal for visiting many of the local areas and loads of places for kids to run off steam in the woods and play areas. Castles are extremely good for kids also.
Hot tub, drinking wine and looking at the stars was a perfect way to end the day, ( once kids had gone to bed after their play in the swimming pool! ).
It's very well thought out and you get the feeling you are staying in a friend's home rather than a soul-less holiday rental. You actually care about the place!!
Although the height of the summer holidays, the surrounding areas and attractions were not full to capacity which made it seem like we visited off season. Defintely a plus, no great mass of people and screaming kids ( except mine, sorry!)
Local food ( and drink!) was fantastic with each attraction making their own cakes and scones etc.
All in all a fantastic place, a fantastic location.
I can understand why this place would attract walkers, dog owners and families and friends.
Foxes Reach, to be fair, deserves the praise that everyone has given it, honest! :-) -

The owners, Fiona and Malcolm, have made Foxes Reach into a top quality cottage that you cannot expect to find in many other places. They have made an astonishing effort to make your stay as comfortable and pleasant as possible. The complementary bottle of wine, a home-made blackcurrant vodka and fresh flowers are just a few examples of the great hospitality you meet upon arrival. The cottage itself is very comfortable and well equipped providing upmarket products and facilities anyone could possibly want for a perfect holiday. The outdoor hot tub is just one special facility that makes this cottage outstanding.
On top of this, Foxes Reach has a perfect location for exploring the areas of Southern Wales and particular the beautiful Wye Valley and the Forest of Dean, the Brecon Beacons National Park, as well as it has easy access to numerous points of interests like Tintern abbey, Chepstow Castle and the Big Pit just to mention a few.
Foxes Reach is simply the best cottage we have ever stayed in and we will definitely come back and can only recommend this place - get your booking sorted!

Foxes Reach is a lovely property. The house was spotless on arrival and we wanted for nothing in the house. The little touches made us feel very welcome – the log burner lit and heating the living room, the flowers, milk and wine waiting for us. The whole house is subtly decorated and the beds were really comfortable and warm, making it difficult to get up in the morning! The kitchen had a plentiful supply of cutlery, cooking utensils, pans etc.
The house was very quiet, giving us all a good night’s sleep after a great day sightseeing in the area. The log burner eats up wood, but it was reasonably priced and for a short break it made a nice change.
We would definitely return to this property if we came to this area again. -

The first thing we planned to do when we arrived on a cold January evening was get the log bruner lit but that was already roaring when we arrived. The cottage really is stunning. Beautiful rooms and a lovely garden. The real treat comes in the hot tub. Sat in there looking up at the stars was a real highlight of our stay. The cottage is in a beautiful village location. Left on 05/23/2010 for a stay in February 2010
We received a fantastic welcome from the owners who
we found to be extremely helpful and friendly. The
cottage itself is absolutely wonderful and full of
interesting little bits of local and family
history, which they have taken the time to record
in a file - makes great reading! Little extra
touches like the bottle of wine on arrival and
complimentary home-made vodka made the stay even
more special. Lots of information and leaflets are
provided regarding the local area and places of
interest, although we didn't venture out too much
due to the heavy snow!
The hot-tub is obviously a massive bonus - we were
able to enjoy it even while surrounded by the snow,
which made a wonderfully relaxing setting! The area
is extremely quiet and it was lovely to just relax
and enjoy the tranquillity. To then go inside and
settle in by the log-burner was a real treat.
Facilities within the cottage are excellent and we
especially liked the owner's dedication to making
it all as environmentally friendly as possible. We
were amazed at the effort and thought that has
obviously gone in to making this cottage such a
wonderful holiday home. We immediately wished we
had booked a longer stay and hope to book another
holiday at Foxes Reach in the future.

Left on 05/02/2010 for a stay in April 2010
We found the cottage absolutely ideal for our first
visit to the area. It is very comfortable and well
equipped. It has a rural location which is well
placed to explore the immediate area if you don't
wish to travel too far. This is intriguing
countryside with lots of good walks, many with
superb views over the Wye, and it is really quite
exciting finding your way around the network of
lanes, byeways and footpaths. The cottage provided
an inspired book, published by the local community
for the Millennium, which when studied serves to
enhance your experience and understanding of the
area. If you are that way inclined, reading
Wordsworth's "lines composed a few miles above
Tintern Abbey" at the very spot from which he drew
his inspiration is well worthwhile!! Foxes Reach is
also an excellent centre for the whole of the Lower
Wye Valley, as well as the Forest of Dean, and well
placed for easy access to a huge variety of
interests from Big Pit at Blaenavon to the Brecons
and to Monmouth. Coming from Northumberland we are
used to magnificent countryside, wide views, lots
of interest and good walking. The Wye area and what
we explored is equally magnificent but very
different. We cannot fault Foxes Reach, we would
like to return and would recommend it to anyone
with complementary interests.
