Auckland, NZBeautiful, relaxing place to stay.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Maunga retreat. It was a lovely house on a beautiful, immaculate-kept property with great views of the mountains. This house was a perfect place to stay with a young child. Lots of open space for my 2 year old to run around and he loved the chickens who pecked around the back yard. With less than a minute's walk to the beach we had the perfect balance of beach-accessibility without the worry of being so close to the water that my son could wander into the sea if I turned my back. The house was spacious and provided a great place to cook and enjoy our own meals. The only hurdle we encountered was when the air conditioning stopped working for a short time. Otherwise we had a great time in Rarotonga and this house was great accommodation.

There isn't a lot I would change here. Maybe a few screens to keep out the birds. Wifi would be nice, but that isn't why I go to the Cooks.

I really enjoyed my week here recently. Ok, that's an understatement - I'm back in the real world and pining daily for Rarotonga!
My friend and I spent the first week in a resort, which was nice enough, but for me there is nothing better then renting your own house and feeling like a local - it doesnt take long to feel at home and ready to settle in indefinitely! The house had plenty of space (2 large bedrooms with kingsize beds that could be split in 2 if necessary). Large living area, full large kitchen and lovely back deck.
I really miss my peaceful mornings sitting on the back deck, eating my breakfast full of local tropical fruit and breathing in the the gorgeous view of the mountains.
The house had everything we needed, large fridge, stove, microwave. We didnt use the tv or dvd player (why watch tele in paradise - plenty of other amazing things to do!). The house was located on my favourite part of the island, with a gorgeous beach a minute's walk down the road.
As two women travelling on our own, we felt very very safe, and I always do in Rarotonga. As an added bonus, the neighbour's dog (who I nicknamed Bruce!) slept on our doorstep every night, giving a short deep warning bark if a stranger walked by (but by no means barked any other time). He even walked us to the bus stop everytime we went there, waited with us until the bus came then walked home again. He waited with me on the main road when I was alone at the bus stop on my last night at 11pm and was great company. He watched until I was safely on the bus then trotted off home!
Thank you Bruce, much love! xx (can I just add that he wasnt in any way annoying, trying to cadge food or anything, just lovely company now & then when he wandered into the yard).
I just adored the rural setting, we had some lovely walks around the back roads, and loved the random chickens and roosters wandering through the yard (if roosters crowing annoys you - book into a resort, as you will hear them everywhere else on the island at all hours! Probably even at some of the resorts!) Personally I love it, and whenever I hear one crow anywhere else, I immediately think of the Cook Islands!
The property was lovely and clean. The shower had a bit of a leak, but I reported this to the property manager Tony and I'm sure its been sorted by now. Tony met us on our first day and popped in on our last day and was only a phone call away if we needed anything.
Meitaki Ma'ata Tony, I'd definitely stay here again!Response from Tony Heays - 11/29/2012

We had a fantastic holiday with our two young boys, the house was perfectly located, just a 2 minute stroll to the beach. Maunga Retreat was very clean, tidy and ideal for families, spacious inside and out. Tony was a great host, very knowledgeable and was happy to help with organising transport and entertainment for us.
We would highly recommend Maunga Retreat.Response from Tony Heays - 07/02/2012

Just spend a fantastic couple of weeks at the retreat. When we arrived the light was on, the soft island music was playing on the radio, there was food in the fridge. Made us very welcome. It is a very secluded property. Close to fantastic snorkeling and a nice beach. Great location. We did not rent a car but took the bus near by.The only thing we could complain about was the knives were very dull.Looking forward to a return trip.

This is a home away from home, everything you need is here! From beach and bath towels to bread, milk and freshly picked fruit from the tree on arrival... what a way to start a holiday arriving at 1am to these complimentry gifts was so lovely and immediately set us up for a wonderful Island holiday. Tony organised a portacot for us and it was all made up ready to go when we arrived so we could put the little ones straight down. The beds are nice, rooms huge which is great for airflow when the fan is on. The kitchen is well fitted out with all you will need for cooking up some island culinary delights and yummy cocktails as there is a good blender too ( i shopped at the local market and experimented with local produce most nights) The doors and windows off the kitchen open right out to create seemless indoor ourdoor flow, we loved the deck area and bar styled window. There is bbq as well if youre not so into cooking. A hose for getting all that sand off your feet before going inside. The hot water is supplied by solar power which i think is fantastic , we had no problems with this at all even though we had quite a few rainy days and not alot of sun at times... even so there is a boost switch which will supply hot water if it does rain for days on end as a back up. Tony is great he manages the property, makes you feel very welcome and is super handy around the place. He checked in to see if all was ok a couple of times if you need him he is a phone call away. The beach is superb!! Safe and nice and quiet :)
I could go on and on but think i have covered the main things?
The only gripe would be needing a few more tumblers, there were only 2 at the time but plenty of cups so we used those instead :) Not much to complain about at all except it's left me with a void...until we can return at least
Enjoy this home away from home. I miss Raro already
