Edmonton, Alberta, CanadaA Serene and Magnificent Hideaway
Left on 01/28/2013 for a stay in January 2012
This wonderful apartment, just minutes away from auckland, is our favorite hideaway for settling into New Zealand life following a grueling 14 hour flight from our home country. There is nothing the hosts won't do to ensure a comfortable and warm welcome and ongoing stay (including a fresh supply of "basics" and treats in the refrigerator and cupboard). Situated very privately at the top of an upscale home, this apartment is very tastefully decorated and has all the modern conveniences needed for a "home away from home". When we visit City Bush, we like to eat in and dine out in equal proportions. The small village of Titirangi, within walking distance, or a 5 minute drive from City Bush boasts a few excellent restaurants, or we travel the 20 minutes to the viaduct downtown or to Ponsonsby to take in some of the excellent fare offered by those areas. But we find it truly difficult to leave this accommodation once we arrive. It is the perfect place to unwind. It literally feels as though you are in a "cabin in the woods". Surrounded by the lush, local vegetation (including a commanding view of an ancient kauri tree) and the ongoing sounds of birdsong, it is a perfect retreat.

This was my second stay at City-Bush Retreat, and I look forward to returning again. If you enjoy nature & art, yet also like a little luxury, you'll love it too!
Max and Frances are very welcoming and helpful. They were always available if I needed anything, yet not obtrusive; I was private.
I was able to settle in, relax and enjoy myself thoroughly.
The apartment itself is beautiful, with art on the walls, use of native woods and good design throughout.
The views from the apartment & deck into the tree tops of the surrounding bush are beautiful, and the calls of native birds mixed with the sound of the nearby stream make the stay a complete joy. I enjoyed the sights, sounds and scent of the surrounding bush, while on the deck, and when walking down to the stream and little waterfall, then on to the kauri tree. Birdwatching, star spotting, looking for glowworms at night on the drive...
One is immersed in peaceful native bush, yet it is easy to reach Titirangi village (shops, cafes, petrol station) and other local centres. There are walks near the apartment such as to/along Exhibition Drive (with views of the harbour) and it is just off Scenic Drive for access by car to the Waitakere Ranges and beyond. Also easy for auckland by train (via Glen Eden) and the airport by car.
Very comfortable bed, ample storage/hanging space. Lovely shower/bathroom. Kitchen/dining/living room area well appointed. Excellent welcome pack of food from a pre-booked breakfast shopping list. There is an interesting selection of books, plus a small pair of binoculars, CD player, packs of playing cards and games available, as well as TV. Outside, great deck area with table and chairs.
Big treat: it was late winter, Max provided a constant supply of logs for the fire, so I also had the delight of evenings next to the log fire. Nb: There is also heating if you do not feel like a log fire.
I recommend City Bush Retreat very highly! Thanks, Max & Fran for giving me a lovely holiday.Response from Frances and Max Harre - 09/30/2012

Thanks IE, so glad you enjoyed a little eco-luxury at City-Bush Retreat again – just in the last few days it has been confirmed that the 700 year old Kauri Tree, “The Grandmother Tree” is listed in the Auckland Cultural Heritage Inventory! We are delighted that this magnificent tree now has the long term protection it deserves. Thanks again!

New York CityAbsolutely Perfect!
Left on 04/27/2012 for a stay in April 2012
It's hard to say what's most appealing about City-Bush Retreat, the gorgeous place itself or Max and Frances, it's charming hosts. The residence is spacious and full of light, nicely appointed with everything you could need and lots of special touches like a welcome note, start up groceries and a personal hello from Max and Frances on arrival. We used the fireplace and grill every day and while it was a little too chilly to dine outside, we thoroughly enjoyed the wrap around terrace with lovely sounds of the waterfall in the background. One of the highlights of our stay was an evening walk guided by Max to show us the local wildlife, glow worms twinkling along the bank of the stream. Beyond the comfort of the living spaces Max and Frances went out of their way to ensure that we had everything we needed and checked on us periodically for updates to our needs. We very strongly recommend that if you visit the auckland area you make a point of staying at City-Bush retreat, a genuine home away from home!

Left on 03/07/2012 for a stay in February 2012
The service was first class from the provision of initial supply of basic food requirements, to the facilities for laundry and Internet access.
This was our second visit to the City Bush Retreat and it reinforced the impression of comfort and homeliness we experienced on our first visit.
The bush location together with proximity of Titarangi is ideal.
The location, cleamliness and hospitality of the owners were the best features of the City Bush Retreat.

Left on 02/26/2012 for a stay in December 2011
I really cannot fault Fran and Max who were marvellous hosts. The flat is beautifully appointed, comfortable and secluded overlooking a typical New Zealand bush garden which even has a great Kauri towering up in the middle of it. Titirangi is a fun, rather alternative community. Fantastic bakery, next to the art gallery. If you need a wonderful massage, reflexology or other similar treatment, go to Willa at Soul in the village (road to Huya beach).
Fran did a shop for us of basic provisions which she put in our kitchen ready for our arrival. The weather was very wet and quite cold but we were warm and cosy with a wood burning stove, heaters and an electric blanket.
Titirangi is near the wonderful west coast beaches - Piha, Bethels etc. Trains into town are a few minutes down the road and take about 35 minutes to the ferry terminal.. Go to Waiheke Island and visit and eat at one of the many vinyards. -

Magical Find Outside auckland
Left on 11/06/2011 for a stay in November 2011
Frances and Max were our extremely kind and helpful hosts. We stayed in their one bedroom apartment above their home. The location and views made this property very appealing. We used the private and huge wrap-around deck often as we were fortunate enough to have good weather. Sitting on the deck overlooking their gorgeous property with it's hidden paths and waterfall and stream was magical. The apartment is conveniently located to a gorgeous scenic drive, buses and a train that takes you into downtown auckland. We used the train several times upon their suggestion to get to the city and ferries. A visitor center and hiking trails are nearby. The apartment itself is perfect. It has every convenience and feels very spacious with it's hardwood floors and high beamed ceilings. We stayed a week and plan to go back to this lovely retreat.

Left on 03/26/2011 for a stay in March 2011
This was such a wonderful find and was a good start to our recent holiday in the North Island. Less than half an hour’s drive from auckland’s International airport and we arrived at this lovely self contained classy apartment.
The apartment is nestled in forest like surroundings, with no noise from passing cars. The village centre (with interesting cafes, supermarket, shops etc) is just a few minutes’ drive away. Furniture and fittings in the apartment were of good quality. All rooms were of good size and well appointed. Big glass doors opened onto a wide patio surrounded by greenery. Comfortable outdoor furniture provided a good spot for relaxing, enjoying the sun and gazing at the grand tall kauri tree that is famous locally.
Bathroom: Spacious and clean with a good sized shower and a good sized washbasin. Generous supply of fluffy towels.
Bedroom: very comfortable queen bed, good quality linen, electrical heating pads if required, ample storage for clothes.
Lounge: Comfy sofas, TV, DVD. A lovely place to relax in after dinner.
Dining: Separate dining area with lovely dining furniture. Open kitchen was spacious and very well equipped with utensils etc and appliances, including a dishwasher, cooker, oven, microwave and good sized fridge..
Good breakfast provisions were provided and we were given a choice of different kinds of breads, cereal, milk, yogurt, coffee, tea etc. Nice little extras like a pitcher of water in fridge, ice cubes, couple of juicy tomatoes, nice ripe avocado and a wonderful bar of chocolate were thoughtfully supplied.
Our Hosts: Frances and Max are wonderful people – friendly and welcoming but never intrusive.
This is indeed a great find and we enjoyed our stay the first night so much we decided to stay here again the last night of this trip before we flew back home!
We will certainly be back!
