49463Peaceful and Serene!
Left on 01/28/2012 for a stay in January 2012
This bungelow is exactly as stated, and the pictures are totally accurate. It is a lovely little home. My husband and I rented this place so I could visit family I hadn't seen since I was 12. We wanted a place where we could sit and visit, and this filled the bill. We loved the light and airy feel of the place; There were beautiful skylights in every room. I thought this would bother me in the bedroom, but it was a very peaceful way to wake up -- naturally. We loved the heated floor tiles in the bathroom, too. The place is very close to hiking, the beach, and the major towns in and about Los angeles. Very quiet. We saw a gray fox scamper across the yard our first night there. While we didn't make it hiking (hubby got sick), we did manage a *beautiful* drive up the Pacific Coast Highway to Ventura where we went on a gray whale-watching excursion (and, yes, we did see the whales!).
This place is a *perfect* couples retreat! You can fit a child on a pull out futon-like chair in the living room, but it's too small for a large family. I imagine the yard would be spectacular in the spring and summer. I could see myself reading a book on the hammock under the very large oak trees.
You are away from the hustle and bustle of a large city, yet you are close enough to reach it in a matter of minutes if you so choose. We preferred the smaller surrounding towns. We ate many of our meals in the Malibu area.
The bungelow faces Topanga Canyon Road, which is the only way in or out of the property. Topanga Canyon Road is obviously a heavily travelled road during morning rush hour from folks who live in the valley traversing the canyon to reach the Pacific Coast Highway on the opposite side. And rush hour starts about 6:30 am. We left the house one morning at 7:15 am to go to breakfast in Malibu, and it did take 45 minutes to make it to Pacific Coast Highway. However, most days we didn't get up early and get out until after 10 pm, so rush hour wasn't an issue for us. We did, however, choose to leave for the airport at 6:30 am the morning we left, even though our flight didn't leave until noon. We had to return a rental car to the Bob Hope airport area, and we just ate breakfast in Burbank. We did head back to the airport via the Pacific Coast Highway rather than the freeways at rush hour. We ran into little traffic at that time of morning, so it was a wise decision to make because we knew we had time to kill.
The only thing I noticed about the bungelow was there was no central heat or air. The owners left some very nice space heaters for our use, which we did use at night, or if we were staying in for the day. They had very lovely ceiling fans in all rooms, and the house is under some very large trees. I would anticipate the bungelow to be comfortable during the warmer months.
The owners are currently working on building a deck facing Topanga Canyon Road, and when that's finished it will be a nice place to sit in the evenings after supper. The owner was very responsive to our questions, and she even called our second day there to see how we were doing.
The bungalow is surrounded by a couple of other homes and the home at the bottom of the hill has a dog. The dog barked at us the first time he saw us, but then left us alone. The owners of the dog installed an electric gate that must be closed with a remote each time you leave. This was not a problem, except when we had a storm one night and we lost electricity for a few hours. We couldn't open the gate until the electricity was restored.
We found having our GPS very, very helpful in this area -- especially since we wanted to avoid heavy traffic some mornings. It was also very convenient when we were out and about and needed a restaurant.
If you are headed for the Los angeles area and looking for a place to stay away from the city crowds, I highly recommend the Topanga Beach Bungelow!
