Additional Location Information
Troncones is a tiny beach village 30 minutes North of Ixtapa and just 45 minutes from Zihuatanejo. (About an hour from the Ixtapa Zihuatanejo international airport.)
GETTING TO TRONCONES FROM THE AIRPORT
Instant Gratification: The fastest way to get here and into the sea/hammock is by taking a cab door to door. From the airport, Zihuatanejo taxis charge about US $70 to bring you to Troncones. The price drops dramatically once you get out of the airport gates…(It’s all about taxes and ariport licenses and other bureaucratic joys.)
Middle Range: Wait at the little palapa restaurants outside the airport gates and hail a cheaper cab directly to Troncones. You might as well have a beer or a cold coco while you wait.
Patience on a Budget: Take a much cheaper cab—or the cheapest option: the microbus (combi), or communal taxi vans)—from outside the airport into Zihuatanejo and then hop on a bus to Troncones (these depart from behind the main Mercado). Expect a much longer and more colorful journey. Especially as you’ll have to wait at the freeway intersection for a ride into Troncones, proper. Troncones combis run when they feel like it. (Ahhh, Mexico.) Locals heading into the village will often give a lift.
TRANSPORTATION IN AND AROUND TRONCONES
Most visitors to Troncones walk a lot. The beach and the road offer diverse cultural and ecological adventures. Bikes are available for rent, as well. Be warned, the road is dusty in dry season and muddy in the rainy season (but still a lot of fun). Microbuses (communal taxi vans) run sporadically every day until 5:30 or so. And, you can always call a cab. (And they might even show up!)
To rent a car or not to rent at car? Car rental in Mexico costs a bit more than in the US, but if you really want to get out and about, it’s well worth it. If you want to get around and explore the sights (and breaks), then you’ll need a car. There is quite a lot to do and see around Troncones, but sometimes doing nothing on the perfect beach is the perfect break.
Bargains Pre-booking a car from the states or Canada can lower prices. If you book here, be sure to bargain with the rental companies at the airport. (To the right of the arrival gate.)
Surfmobile alert: Remember some of the better surf spots are at the end of unmanicured dirt roads (muddy moguls and treacherous swamps in summer), so that itty-bitty bargain tin-can rental might not be your best bet. If you hope to visit (and return from), say, the Ranch, an upgrade might be in order.
Lower your carbon footprint (and leave more footprints) For the ultimate relaxation vacation, forget the car—in Troncones, you won’t really need it. Rent a bike, stroll down the beach or jungle road, or use the occasional taxi or microbus.
Parking: we do have off street parking for one mid-sized vehicle, and plenty of street parking.
